Genealogy Do-Over - Thoughts?

Unless you are a genealogist living under a rock or have been so busy researching that you have not been following the genealogy social media the past two weeks, you have heard about the Genealogy Do-Over. I share my thoughts in this post and would love to know yours. Is the Genealogy Do-Over in your future? Why or why not? Originally shared by Tessa Keough On New Year's Eve when thoughts go to resolutions, goals and plans for the New Year - I weigh in on the Genealogy Do-Over (it must be wordy Wednesday). I gave this some thought and hope you do too.  http://keoughcorner.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-genealogy-do-over-my-thoughts.html

Inability to post/email comments - why?

I am new on the Legacy User Group and am wondering how I resolve the inability to post/email comments.  When I try to email a response to the list I get an error from the AOL server:   ----- The delivery status notification errors ----- : conversation with      mail.LegacyUsers.com timed out while sending MAIL FROM Has anyone had this issue?  I have enjoyed the lessons learned and would love to be able to contribute. ~Mike

Another Tuesday's Tip - Some days I am on a roll!

Image
Actually on the Legacy User Group a person asked how anyone handles their patronymic surnames and farm names (love those bygdebokers). If you have Scandinavian ancestors you will know what he was talking about - if you don't, perhaps you will find another use for my little "cheat."  The Norwegians who lived on farms used the farm name as a means of identification - so Erik Ivarsen, Medkilplass/Hastagjerdet was Erik Ivar's son born on  the Medkilplass farm who moved to the Hastagjerdet farm. Of course his nine children were either Erik's datters (daughters) or Erik's sens (sons) and they were born at Hastagjerdet. I use the individual's patronymic name cause that is the name they used AND I put the farm names in the suffix title. It looks a little something like this. I know the same holds true for my Swedish ancestors (most of whom were on farms as well).  If you have Scandinavian ancestors, how do you keep track of the patronymic and farm informati...

Tuesday's Tip - Location reports to help in a search.

I subscribe to the Legacy User Group email forum (I hope I have that right!). Anyway, it is the place where a number of Legacy users ask questions or try to get their Legacy problems solved. It is moderated by Legacy and the messages are archived. Some of the questions posed are jumping off points for me - I try to figure out the answer (sometimes I even post my response). A recent one was interesting in a couple of ways. Why not read the question, follow along with my suggestion, and then think about (and share) how you would answer the question. A person is going to research in a particular place and wants a list of surnames that occur in that place (although they would like cities and counties, if possible, they really need the State and the surnames that occur there). The person has not been consistent in their data entry for locations and does not have the time to clean up their database. They are aware of the location report option but because their data entry is inconsiste...

Of course it is time to wish everyone in our LVUG Community here on Google+ a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ! It has been a great year and I would like to thank each of our 787 members - some of you have been with us since the beginning  (thanks so much) and some joined this year (welcome). Your questions, comments and suggestions make our LVUG Community an active and helpful place to be to learn more about using our favorite genealogy software . Thanks While I have you here today - why not check out Tony Proctor's post on place, location and address. I find the discussion interesting and I do appreciate his approach. Here in the LVUG Community, we have discussed location before: using the master location list, including latitude and longitude, listing the place as it was identified at time of event, making notes to include any additional information that might be helpful to you and anyone else using your database. Tony discusses three things - place, location an...

How did births get registered around 1920?

Was it done by the attending doctor or by the parents? Or? I'm trying to understand how my aunt was registered as having been born a year later than she actually was. This was not a transcription error; it was intentional by the parents.

Tuesday's Tip - A heads-up that we will not be having a LVUG hangout.

Between holiday plans and activities (that seem to be overwhelming and keep growing in number), I thought we could use a little break. So relax and enjoy that hour - perhaps spend it working on your genealogy research, adding some Christmas memories to your Legacy database, or spreading good cheer to friends or neighbors.  If you could use just a few moments out of your day to let me know what topics you would like us to cover in 2015 - I would consider it a gift (my not so subtle Christmas tie-in!). Just post your thoughts right below in the comment section. If you are wondering what to do with yourself since we don't have a hangout this month, why not check out any of the 31 video tips that were posted  here at the LVUG Community and at my YouTube channel in October. They all relate to some topic in the Legacy Help file and maybe there will be something new to you . For my part, that half hour a day FindAGrave project is coming along nicely and I have found se...

I imported from FTM 2014 into Legacy 8 - question.

I just imported from FTM 2014 into Legacy 8 and plan to work in Legacy from here on out.  The check/repair report in Legacy says I need to verify/correct the gender of one wife.  When I clicked on "Nancy", sure enough she was listed as a male. :)  All of the data entry boxes on her individual Information form appear editable except for gender.  "Female" and "?" are grayed out and I cannot change her gender from male to female.  What now? I also have another marriage where the report says I need to verify/correct the gender of a husband, but he is marked down as male and his wife is female so I presume I tell the program to ignore that error from here on out.

Lumper versus Splitters.

Saw this on Twitter and thought it might be of interest to this group. It's a useful explanation of Lumpers vs Splitters -- i.e. how you organize your sources in Legacy. Hope the link comes through properly. http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2014/12/lumpers-vs-splitters.html?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=tweet&utm_content=LUG&utm_campaign=LegacyTip-LumpersSplitters

Tuesday's Tip - Carve a bit of time to reflect on what you have accomplished.

As we get swamped with holiday plans and activities, try to carve a bit of time to reflect on what you accomplished in 2014 (any special projects, research trips or courses) and think about what you might want to focus on in 2015 . What areas of research do you plan to focus on? What seminars and conferences do you want to attend (either in person or virtually)? What projects, societies or groups do you plan to volunteer some time with? And what Legacy webinar sessions fit in with your interests and plans? BECAUSE the 2015 Legacy Webinar Schedule is out and you can register for any sessions that you are interested in all from the comfort of your computer! Why not check out what is on the schedule and if any of those sessions fit in with your research plans for 2015 . The red link in the top right-hand corner is a simple way to register for multiple sessions at one time. Although our LVUG Community is not affiliated with Legacy or Millennia, we do like their software AND kno...

Glitch in Legacy Marriages - FYI

For info, for Legacy 8 users, if you do a search for a given Marriage Event-Name and you get a "no matches" result even though there should be some, there is a bug that will be addressed in a future update (tagged as issue 5538).  The search apparently fails for all but the "Equals To" condition.  I reported a problem and this was the response.  I'm not sure if it just appeared in update 459 or if it exists for other 8.0 versions.

Question regarding custom search and report.

I'm new to Legacy and new to this community so this may have been asked before but my search didn't show it.  I want to create a completely custom search and report. I'm trying to connect families for which I have incomplete information- What I have is from LDS films from Poland in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Many of the first names are common and I don't know which may be connected or may be duplicates. I'd like to do a search for every individual with a specific father's name, i.e. show me everyone whose father was Adalbert Dachtera. Can this be done? thanks, Mary Dachtera Foxworthy

Tuesday's Tip - Focus on one thing!

We had a very busy Thanksgiving weekend (Thanksgiving in 2 parts because family was in from out of town). Everyone has traveled back home and now we put up the lights and the Advent season begins. As we prepare for the Christmas holidays, we get very busy and maybe we have less time for our family history (understandable, but ...). My Tuesday's Tip this week is to encourage all LVUG Community members to lighten up and enjoy the season . Focus on one project and spend a little time on it each day (break it down into manageable pieces). A project I am working on is to get through my Search Results for possible FindAGrave entries. My tip is to make that search list and then work on a dozen names each day (I am getting up a half hour earlier to get this done in peace and quiet). It moves pretty quickly and I can easily pick up from where I left off on my list because it is my last search list (nice feature). Since I have the source citation set up and saved, I can easily make sur...

Tuesday's Tip - Thanksgiving edition!

Image
First off,  I am thankful for my co-moderators here at the LVUG Community -Susan Clark Linda McCauley and Carol Stevens have been and continue to be a huge help and keep me in the know genealogy speaking. We have been joined in hangouts by Monique Riley and Shannon Thomas who have shared their knowledge of Legacy and other great tools like Animap and Evernote. To all those who started out with us and to all of you have joined us - as of today 762 members - thanks and welcome. To the folks at Legacy Family Tree Software who have put together a great software program and continue to make improvements and inform and educate with their Legacy Webinars - thanks. And to the Google folks who provide the opportunity for us to use Google+, YouTube and Communities - so we can all share online - we have come a long way in the past few years! Now to share a little bit of how I am using Legacy this Thanksgiving season. I put together some photos and Legacy scr...

How I enter Civil War information in Legacy.

My blog was updated with a new post about how I enter Civil War information into Legacy. http://www.ourlifepicturebypicture.com/2014/11/entering-civil-war-ancestors-in-legacy.html

Can I import little twig Gedcom into an existing Legacy tree?

I'm wanting to switch from Family Tree Maker 2014 to Legacy and at some point I need to cut off building my family tree on Ancestry.com and syncing it to FTM 2014  (to pull in the media).  I plan to export from FTM 2014 into Legacy (to pull in the media).   I am almost done with the direct line ancestors (I also record their siblings)  through the early to mid-1800's. (comparing entries with source documents and excellent family research done by cousins)  I'm not adding the direct line ancestors from the 1700's yet (even though I can "see" them at Ancestry.com) because of lack of documentation and conflicting research.   Can I work on the descendant line for my great-great-great-great aunts and uncles separately at Ancestry.com and then export that particular little Gedcom to Legacy (via FTM 2014 to retain media) and attach it without problem? That way I could have the best of all worlds.  Doing research and documentation in Legacy ...

Missed Evernote Webinar - watch the recording!

If you did not have a chance to attend today's Legacy Webinar - make a point to watch the recording ! Lisa Louise Cooke gave an excellent presentation on one of our favorite topics - using Evernote with your genealogy . And we have our own Evernote fan and teacher here in our LVUG Community, Shannon Thomas, who has shared her tips and suggestions for using Evernote with Legacy . Between the two of them - no excuses for not learning and making use of Evernote with Legacy. Shannon continues to share how she uses Evernote with Legacy and it is a huge help in getting my head around all the things Evernote is capable of.   So this is a webinar to watch to help you get the most from two great programs - Legacy and Evernote . (It should be in the archived videos section later today). http://www.familytreewebinars.com/

Heads Up - LVUG Community - no hangout this month.

Heads Up - LVUG Community  - I am working out some internet issues (speed and connectivity) with my service provider AND don't want to run our hangout tomorrow, only to have it crash. So NO HANGOUT TOMORROW and this problem will be resolved within the week. I will record a video and upload to our Community later this week with what I had planned to discuss with Linda McCauley and Shannon Thomas and whoever else was going to JOIN in the room. Will be sharing a bit about Thanksgiving ideas for family history (being subtle but perhaps gathering some information!) and a bit of data entry for Legacy involving our veterans - military service and gravesite locator ( both in honor of November dates - Thanksgiving and Veterans Day ). If you have any suggestions for either topic, please be sure to share them with us. AND thanks for understanding that sometimes that internet grinch shows up right around hangout day !

Tuesday's Tip - One of my favorite things StoryCorps!

One of my favorite things StoryCorps is celebrating "10 years of listening to America." During the Thanksgiving weekend StoryCorps has always shared a theme and encouraged us to sit down with family or friends and listen and record their stories. Whether those stories are about Military Service, the Teachers Initiative, StoryCorps Legacy, Memory Loss, and many other initiatives, StoryCorps provides resources, tools and encouragement to help us tell our stories. Why not check out StoryCorps' website (and their resources - like great questions in the link below) to prepare for your Thanksgiving weekend. (And then get those stories into your Legacy family files!). http://storycorps.org/great-questions/

Tuesday's Tip - Today is Veterans Day in the USA.

You will notice several posts and articles about the history of Veterans Day, thanks to the men and women who have served our country (and their families because serving in the military is always a family affair), and remembrances of those in our own families who served. Are you telling their stories? Are you noting their military service and perhaps their burial information in your Legacy family file? Why not do a search for those who served in the military in your family file and use some time today to focus on the veterans in your family's history. And why not think about working on a memorial transcription project in the coming year (start today or this month and have something to post next November 11). The Honor Roll Project at Nutfield Genealogy ( Heather Wilkinson Rojo ) is a great project to work on - why not check it out (and plan to post for Memorial Day and Veterans Day). And thanks to all those who have served .

Is Legacy available for my android?

Can anyone tell me if I can get Legacy app for my android mobile?

Questions from one switching from FTM to Legacy.

I've decided to use Legacy as my genealogy program and would like your opinions as to my current plan of research.  I currently use Family Tree Maker 2014 so I can get the media downloaded to my computer quickly but I do plan to switch to Legacy. I have been extremely fortunate to have 3/4 of the family stay put in two spots since the early to mid 1800's.  The Irish Catholic 1/4 all arrived in 1840-1870 and married other Catholic families in the same county until the mid-1900's.   The other half all lived within 20 miles of each other (straddling a county line) and married the boy/girl next door for 150 years.  I have cousins who have generously supplied me with copies of their decades of research on this branch. In other words, I have a lot of documentation I can get online at Ancestry.com fairly quickly through public records.  (I look at the census reports, etc and make sure it all agrees with my cousin's research/Irish Catholic records I hav...

Clooz enhances and supports your Legacy experience.

Clooz enhances and supports your Legacy experience If you are not yet familiar with the virtually seamless export interface of processed source document information from Clooz 3.3 to Legacy 7.5/8.0, here are two Blog posts that review some of the capabilities.   http://clooz.com/clooz_blog.php?pid=13&p=3&search=#blt http://clooz.com/clooz_blog.php?pid=12&p=3&search=#blt When we first released this data export interface, I conducted a test. I opened blank Clooz and Legacy files and made the new Legacy file the primary external file link in Clooz.  I then processed over 40 documents of various types in Clooz, exporting the processed data to Legacy.  By paying careful attention to the great flexibility and user control over exactly what is exported, I created a complete Legacy Family Tree file without typing a single thing directly into Legacy.  I was then able to test and use all of the great capabilities of Legacy inherent in this top of the ...

Swedish ancestors? Check out ArkivDigital.

For those of you with Swedish ancestors, ArkivDigital is celebrating National Archives Day by opening up their online database for free on November 8 & 9 . So what are you waiting for - do a quick search in Legacy for your Swedish ancestors and start looking them in up in the records (remember how I told you about those fascinating Household Examination Records - ah it was the video on my lack of source citations!). ArkivDigital's color images of the HER and other records are gorgeous. Heck if you don't have Swedish ancestors, look up some of mine or just go and play around to see how it is done. Thanks for the Family History Month videos!

I have been following this community for a while, inspired by Tessa Keough YouTube videos. I am now very slowly re-entering material into Legacy and getting to grips with it. I loved the clips last month and I am still watching. So a public thanks and shout out. Legacy users are very lucky to have such inspiration and engagement.

Any update on TNG import to Legacy?

I have been a user of The Master Genealogist for years, but unfortunately this excellent software will now close down. No more updates will come, so I have decided to make a change to Legacy. I have bought the Pro Version and have made a gedcom transfer from TMG. It doesn't look too bad, but some things are missing. I know the people behind Legacy are working on a direct import from TMG, but it is some time now since we heard anything about the progress. Can someone in this group enlighten me a bit ?

Tessa and LVUG community - thanks for the tips & tricks videos.

Tessa and community...I just had to play "catch up" to finish watching the 2014 October Tips & Tricks.  I intend to share these with the LUG sponsored by the North San Diego County Genealogy Society.  What a great way for us to learn -- a little at a time!  Tessa -- you are amazing -- thank you for putting this together for us.

Tuesday's Tip - Go Vote - many worked hard to gain us the vote.

Many of our LVUG Community members are American citizens. Today is November 4 and is election day . From Senate and House elections, to Governors and State Legislatures, to Local elections, as well as bond issues and amendments - it is all in play today. If you haven't already voted by absentee ballot, early voting, or mail ballot - today is the day! Please vote ( after reading up on the issues and candidates ) and then you can add that fact/event into your Legacy family file. No matter the party, the person or the issue - we have the ability to make our voice heard. Thanks

Our next hangout - join us!

Originally shared by Tessa Keough As I mentioned last week, our monthly LVUG hangout is going to be pure fun, a bit of escapism, and full of genealogy dreams! On September 30th Jennifer Shoer (aka The Scrappy Genealogist) wrote a terrific blog post about taking a genealogy sabbatical year. In it she asked the question "If you could spend each of the next twelve months living in one of your ancestral locations and researching on-site, where would you go?" And I thought what a great way to get back into the genealogy research mindset (after our summer breaks, vacations and holidays, sending the kids back to school, attending conferences and seminars, and/or doing volunteer projects or home improvement projects).  So please join us at the LVUG Community here on Google+ as we share our genealogy sabbatical years. Question about Descendant book report - help.

I have a problem with the Descendant Book Report that I can't figure out.  My stepson is in his second marriage.  He is a 5th generation descendant of the main person the report is generated on.  No matter what I do his second marriage shows up before his first message (as shown below). Jason married on , in . Children from this marriage were: Jason next married in 1992.  The marriage ended in divorce before 2007. The child from this marriage was: I have a similar situation with my wife (who is a 4th generation person in this report).  This is the second marriage for both of us but the report reflects our situation correctly.  I looked at the marriage list and thought that maybe it was based on the marriage record number since I entered Jason's second marriage first.  I deleted and recreated the second marriage so that the index numbers would be sequentially correct but that didn't help either.  In fact I think I did the same wit...

Good morning - Where would you go on a research trip?

Good morning - we are going to do our best to post something every day (all under Tuesday's Tips) for Family History Month. We did this last year and it was a big hit. So yesterday I gave you a PDF with 66 links to e-learning opportunities (more on that in our October Tuesday's Tips videos). Today I thought we could spend a bit of time dreaming . Earlier this week Jennifer Shoer (aka The Scrappy Genealogist) wrote a terrific blog post about taking a genealogy sabbatical. She planned her entire year - with travel and research. I think it is a great idea. Why not read her post (link below) and dream a little. What would you do? Where would you go? What order should your trip be set up? Are you coming back to your home-base or just traveling for all 12 months? Jot your thoughts/plans down, perhaps circle the globe (and bonus points if you provide your reasoning). You may be wondering why dream - the true question is why not dream? Perhaps we cannot take the actual trip -...

How to research together using Legacy?

I'm having a strange issue--which I hope is not a duplicate query. My friend and I do research on his family on separate continents.  When we have updated our files, we want to merge the information without overwriting each other's work.  We would love to be able to use a database simultaneously, but since Legacy downloads the family file onto the local machine and overwrites the database when it backs up, we seem to have hit an impasse on how to research together.  Am I missing it or IS there a way for multiple users to work on a family history?

Happy Family History Month!

Happy Family History Month (although it is for the USA, everyone gets to share in the fun). No doubt many genealogists, family historians and bloggers will be sharing in a big way during the entire month of October to celebrate family history and genealogy. Do you have any plans - either blogging every day, researching every day, or using a new to you feature of Legacy each day during the month? Why not share and tell us what you will be up to during October. As promised yesterday (you did watch my video didn't you?), the link will (hopefully) open up a handout that provides both an overview of what we will cover each Tuesday for the next four weeks and links for all kinds on e-learning. Enjoy!  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1agi_Y4IUULPNDvDKhu-ry6e5-zE8IE2jq1LbEPe37_w/edit?usp=sharing

Tuesday's Tip - Something just a bit different.

Tuesday's Tip - Something just a bit different but hopefully useful to all our LVUG Community members. Today's video is the first of a five-part series on E-Learning, especially in regard to genealogy and family history. Tomorrow is the first day of October and the start of Family History Month so I will post a handout that includes links to many e-learning opportunities that you can take advantage of and we will have several posts during the month covering Legacy features (well known and lesser known). Why not join in the fun and post your tips and tricks for using Legacy during Family History Month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O8jh1Ccqb8

Question about the ancestor book report.

I have a question about the ancestor book report. After it processes about 19 - 20 generations it starts overlapping the "id" number for the children over the i, ii, iii, id number with what appears to be the ahnentafel id of that child. This is not good. How do I stop the printing of that ahnentafel id. After about 8 or 9 generations it is absolutely unusable. I have 78 generations and the number takes up half the line. Thank you Mike

How can I eliminate some lines in a Gedcom?

How can I eliminate the lines: _QUAL, _SOUR, _INFO & _EVID from a Gedcom which includes source details?  The source detail screen says that use of the Surety and source quality info is Optional, but there doesn't appear to be a way to exercise that option when creating Gedcoms.  I've tried eliminating the Gedcom code QUAL and a few other similar codes, to no avail.  Will choosing Generic or Basic Gedcom formats resolve?   By the way, shared events in a Gedcom file create a complete mess.  Until Gedcom catches up to the Legacy feature, it is almost useless for export purposes IMO.

As promised - a bonus video.

As promised - a bonus video that follows up on this week's Tuesday's Tip . I check out an unverified story involving immigration from Ireland to the USA with some of my Murphy ancestors. Let me know how you do your research and any tips you have to share with the rest of us. Slainte. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCWQSZdPvWw

Here is that census form everyone wanted.

I had a lot of requests about the form I used to track my families through census records in this post.  I finally found the original email that had the original form from the original creator.  Like most good things in the genealogy sphere, she – being… http://aremyrootsshowing.jenny-ology.com/2014/09/24/that-form-everyone-wanted/

Pruning my family tree - thoughts?

I think I saw something to answer this question sometime in the past, but cannot recall...  Over the years, I have been somewhat undisciplined when adding people to my Legacy family tree to a point where, today there are many very, very distant relatives that I would like to remove.  I was thinking of possibly starting over - hopefully by being able to create a new tree containing only by direct line ancestors starting with my mother and father - eliminating the "mothers-in-lay of 28th cousins - 14 times removed."  Is there a way to create such a tree without having to one by one through my entire data base?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks

Unknown parents in Legacy.

How many of you have a family group where you don't know the name of one of the spouses, but you have children in the family group? I'm not talking about not knowing the wife's maiden name, but a situation when you don't know the father's name or the mother's name. I've gotten into trouble trying to add the spouse in family view, even if I have him/her in my database. When I choose "Add a Person" it creates a new marriage, even if you link to an existing person and any existing children become stepchildren. To solve that problem, instead of clicking "Add a person," go to the marriage by selecting the spouse icon on the family view and selecting the "unknown" spouse from the list. Then select "Add new wife" or "Add new husband." Now you've got only one marriage with the children with the correct parents. Maybe everyone knew about this already, but this was a stumbling block for me and I hope it helps so...

Tuesday's Tip - This week the Index view in Legacy.

This week I check the Index View in Legacy. Do you use it? How do you use it? Have you customized it? Do you save and load different versions of the Index? Have you learned how to "freeze panes"? Share how you use the Index View and any tips you have with the rest of us.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPW1NZqvsqk

A separate database for obituaries - thoughts?

I would like to build a separate database (file) for obits and their image files.  Does anyone have any recommendations on how to use Legacy for that purpose?  This would not be connected to my family file.

Is there a way to tag people on the potential problems report?

I know you can print it out but that would not be helpful in my case. I have a lot. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Want to remove the death cause line on the family view - how?

Hi, can anyone tell me how to remove the Death Cause (DthCau) line on the family page?  I thought it would be easy by looking in Options, Customize, but I don't seem to be able to find it.  I don't have this information for almost all of my people I've entered, so it is redundant.

Tuesday's Tip - searching, tagging & data entry with Find A Grave.

Well a week late and I learned something - it was not necessarily YouTube that caused my problem of not being able to upload a video. Every so often you might want to uninstall and re-install your browser because it gets glitchy . I had some issues with Chrome and that fix seemed to set everything to rights. BUT make sure you have another browser available on your computer (so you can re-install from somewhere) and make sure to NOT delete your bookmarks and data.  NOW, on to Tuesday's Tip - we have the video today - it is an introduction to some of our new members and a reminder to the old hands here about "getting around in the LVUG Community." Also I walk through my search, tagging and data entry with FindAGrave research. So this is how I do it - how do you do it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LNU8wvRwlw

Don't forget today's Virtual Users webinar today.

Don't forget today's Virtual Users webinar today (Friday) at 2 pm EST.  Here is the link  http://www.familytreewebinars.com/webinar_details.php?webinar_id=234 Rumor has it that Geoff will be talking about locations and whatever else pops in his head :)   There were be a couple of tech support people logged in behind the scenes to answer any questions you type into your chat box. http://www.familytreewebinars.com/webinar_details.php?webinar_id=234

Tuesday's Tip - YouTube video will be a little late.

Tuesday's Tip is going to be a bit late . I recorded a video and have been trying off and on to upload it to YouTube for the past 5 hours. When Google is good - it is very good, AND when it's bad, it's horrid. I can't figure out why it is not working and some others have complained of the same problem. Hopefully I can post either later tonight or tomorrow morning. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Question about FindAGrave research and entries.

I thought there was a post about this lately but cannot find it. It is probably Legacy Searching 101, but I cannot figure it out. How can I tag those who do NOT have a FindAGrave citation in my file? I want a list so I can go and search for those people that are missing a FindAGrave source.  I tried to do a detailed search, but the only choice under either Source-citation or Source-Master Source is "Contains" (under How to Look).  It needs "Does Not Contains"!  I cannot use the Missing Sources tab under Search for Burial Date and Place, because that might not include all who should come up in the missing FindAGrave search (as someone might have a source there, but not a FindAGrave one).  Sorry to ask such a basic question.  I'm sure someone has figured this out before. This information would actually be helpful to know for searching for people with any source that does not exist for a person.

Legacy update stuck - getting rid of popup box.

Image
Two days ago I noticed there was an update notice on the Home page of Legacy 7. So I clicked to download. The auto install got stuck part way and it gave me this notice to download it from the website instead. That took me to a page for version 8, which I don't want. Now this box pops up every single time I open Legacy. Is there a way to get rid of it?

Tuesday's Tip - Using search functions with PDFs and Excel.

There has been lots of talk recently (hangouts, posts, videos in the Google+sphere) about Excel workbooks and Google Spreadsheets (and of course csv or comma separated value sheets - basically the generic version) with genealogy. Some have discussed how they download information from the various websites (FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeBMD, etc.) and put that data into a csv file of choice. I have a couple of examples on my YouTube channel as well as a video with 20 tips for Excel. And we know (or should know) that Legacy allows us to perform advanced searches and serve up our results in text, pdf and/or csv files . Oftentimes if we are acquiring data and not quite ready to put it into our family database file, a csv file is a good place for it. I use Excel workbooks for my specialized research and add a column to the workbook for my Legacy RIN and/or MRIN. That way I have a method of keeping track of individuals. I know others (Julie Goucher, Jill Ball and JL Be...

Media issues and Legacy freezing?

Has anyone had trouble adding photos to a person? Recently I have have been having trouble adding photos to Legacy 8 and when I try to add the photos and the programs freezes.

No hangout this month.

This month we will not have our regular hangout - consider it a little holiday as I am out of town to put the finishing touches on my parents' big anniversary party. We are all headed back to their hometown to visit with our extended family (lots of opportunities to get more information for our family tree!). Take care and enjoy these last two weeks of summer before all that back to school and end of vacations time rolls around. We will be back in September (same time same channel) on the third Thursday of the month .

Tuesday's Tip - Watch Russ Worthington explain how he uses FindAGrave.

Tuesday's Tip - Why not register for and watch Russ Worthington tomorrow as he shares his approach to working with FindAGrave. He will be featured on the Legacy Wednesday Webinar series. Russ is doing something that many of the other presenters don't do - although his genealogy program of choice is Family Tree Maker, he is using Legacy to show the process in action (well done Russ). JL Beeken has also shown how to use the Legacy search feature to work with FindAGrave and that has been highlighted at JL's blog and mentioned here in the Community. Using FindAGrave (and similar sites) is a great way to find those clues (and sometimes the gravestones and additional information) about ancestors. Why not watch and learn - and then apply that knowledge. After the webinar, if you have any suggestions or additional tips to share - place them right here in the Community !

Legacy asking me to convert my files - what gives?

Well this is odd. Opened up Legacy and it told me I had to convert my file (??!). I originally converted my file from 7.5 to 8.0 a few months back BUT did that and now I have 2 copies of the same file. Closed out and when I opened again - you guessed it, Legacy said it needed to convert - now I have three copies of same file. Anyone else having this issue today (used Legacy yesterday and no issues).

How to run a simple search with modification date - help.

I am trying to run a simple detailed search to find those people modified on a certain date.  What format do I use for the date?  I have run several tests and I cannot get it to work.  I am clicking on Find > Detailed Search,  under Primary Condition, "Look for Whom", I chose "Individual", under "Where to Look" I chose "Modified Date",  under "How to look" I chose "Equal To", under "What to Look For" I typed "07/08/14" (meaning July 8, 2014.  I have tried this test in both version 7.5 and 8.0.  I get the message, "No records were found with this criteria" even though I can plainly see there are records with this date.  Also, if I choose "After" in the category "How to Look", and use the same date, it brings up ALL the records in my file, which is not correct. Hmmm. . . . Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Footnotes with citations and events.

How do I create separate footnotes/endnotes for each citation for a single event?

Moving files between drives - help.

Again Good Morning. What I neglected to mention in my last message is that I am about the most technically inept person around these parts.  It seems that I moved the first file from my D drive correctly.  I then moved the other files from the D drive back  to the D drive.  I now have everything in Legacy and what I am going to ask for for Christmas is regular access to a fifteen year old..   Thank you all for your suggestions. Elizabeth

Question about Gedcom transfer.

Good Morning from New Jersey! I am new to Legacy after having used Family Tree Maker for about 15 years.  I moved my 16 branches to Legacy Standard Edition this morning through Gedcom transfers. I followed all of the instructions, I thought, and now can only find one file.  Where did all of the others go and how do I retrieve them?  Thanks. Elizabeth

Data entry with 5 marriages and a repeat spouse?

He married 5 times. He married the 3rd wife twice, in other words before and after the 4th wife. I have a date and document for their second marriage but not for their first, i.e. his third. I know she was the third because they had two children and I know their dates. While he was married to someone else (his 4th) she kept his surname. I'm inclined to put their second marriage into Events and leave the marriage information blank. What do you think?

Making the switch from TMG to Legacy - new here.

Hi Guys, I'm in Australia and have been researching for nearly fifteen years. I started using Personal Ancestral File (friendly), then went to The Master Genealogist (powerful) and ended up with Legacy - powerful yet friendly. I stumbled onto Tessa's video's and this group via Youtube Graham

Tuesday's Tip - Watch Debunking Misleading Records.

This week is an easy one (a no-brainer!). There are a handful (6) genealogy/family history speakers who I will make every effort to see in person, watch a webinar or hangout, or listen to a podcast or recording if they are the presenter. Why? Because these individuals have a great deal of insight, I always learn something, and they make every effort to update and keep their content current and thoughtful. For me, one of those speakers is Thomas Jones.  Over at the Legacy Webinar series, you still have a few days to enjoy his "Debunking Misleading Records" webinar before it goes behind the paywall. Perhaps you attended live (it may be worth re-watching), perhaps you missed it (check it out). Thomas Jones is not a light presenter (when I first started out in genealogy, he was a special speaker and his material was far over my head). I am happy to say now "I get it." So today's tip, this is a webinar recording you don't want to miss - you have until August...

FamilyTreeMaker switching to Legacy - pitfalls?

I have been a user of FTM for many years but I am switching to Legacy.  What have other former users of FTM done, started over or just tried to clean up sources, notes, etc...?

Tuesday's Tip - Help test FamilySearch's wiki usability.

Tuesday's Tip - It is not what I promised during our most recent LVUG Hangout (that will come soon but today was a crazy day). In the meantime, why not test your research skills and help out FamilySearch.org by testing their Wiki Usability. I am one of those people willing to try something and give my opinion. Checked out the sites and chose my favorite. And then went on to find the death information for Douglas and Isaac - next to work on marriage records. So far, so good - how about you? https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Testing:_Wiki_Usability

How do I not show living people in a Gedcom?

Attaching a Gedcom and DNA to GedMatch. Is there a way to not showing living people but still show me in the Gedcom.

Mistakes in original sources - how to note?

I have found many mistakes in original sources lately and am curious if others have experienced the same thing. The latest find was yesterday when I found a birth record for a great uncle on Ancestry.  The person who recorded the births for the town added no given names to the children born. They are all listed with their surnames only. The record has the birth date and the parents names for each child except in my great uncle's case the names of the parents are incorrect. The names given are Daniel and Sarah when his parents first names were Dan and Emma. I can understand the Daniel but Sarah? The town they lived in was tiny that the 1900 census is only 3 images. I recently took photos of records from a church record and one of the above named sisters has an aunt and uncle listed as her parents in that record.  Other church records give the correct parents for both her and her brother mentioned above. I knew these people quite well.  The great aunt lived over the ro...

Issues watching Illinois webinar recording.

Is anyone else having a problem watching the archive of the Illinois webinar by Thomas MacEntee that was this Wednesday?  I tried 3x yesterday and 3x today and it only loads the first 10 minutes.  Thanks.

Question about media gallery.

I just got the new version of Legacy a few months ago and have been happily entering my data into it.  Just started to enter pics into the Media Gallery and I'm having problems.  It's extremely slow when I try to scroll through to find a picture, flickers, and after just a few pictures it crashes the computer loosing the pics that I just put on.  I have used Family Tree Maker for years and have never had any problem with my pictures there.    I love Legacy 8 Deluxe but I have to have the pictures.  Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try so that I don't have to go back to Family Tree Maker?  Does it not like Windows 8?  Is there a setting I just don't know about?

This month we answer questions from our community.

We have pulled some questions from the forum and our Community - where Legacy users have asked "how do I do xxxxx?" and we are going to discuss our approach. Remember there is not one way - so we want you to join in and give your suggestions! Then we will discuss how we use e-learning opportunities. Are we making the best use of our time and effort AND what can we do to get more out of the variety of e-learning opportunities. Our LVUG hangout is this Thursday at 1:00 pm (pacific time) that is  1:00 pm pacific time USA  2:00 pm mountain time USA  3:00 pm central time USA  4:00 pm eastern time USA And why not check out www.worldtimebuddy.com to find the timezone of interest to you. Know that Google puts the hangout invitation in your computer's timezone. You can JOIN the hangout (we have room for 10 JOINers) or VIEW at the Community Event (just click on the arrow once we start the broadcast) or over on my YouTube Channel. If you can't make it l...

Tuesday's Tip - why not JOIN or VIEW our LVUG hangout.

JOIN or VIEW our LVUG hangout scheduled for this Thursday (notice will be going out in just a bit). Because we had such a big weekend - what with the geneasleepover and the FamilySearch indexing project (and congrats to all who joined in and did such an amazing job), Thursday's hangout is going to be very low key. I have pulled a few questions off the forum and here in the Community about how to do something in Legacy and we will discuss how we do it. Also we are going to discuss a few tips and suggestions for e-learning and what we do before and after we have been to the webinar, hangout, live streamed lecture. Are we using what we have learned? So Tuesday's Tip is to join us this Thursday - and share your thoughts on how you use e-learning opportunities and see if we can answer a few "how do I that?" questions.

Moving the date for our July hangout.

As our long-time LVUG Community members know we have a monthly hangout on the third Thursday of the month. Last month we took a "start of summer" break in the schedule because everyone's schedules were swamped. We have been really good about keeping to our schedule and providing you with (we hope) interesting and informative monthly meetings. And we will continue to do that in the future - as all of us do this as volunteers and we enjoy it. However, this month a couple of things took up more of my volunteer time than expected. Those of you who know that I am in the Guild of One-Name Studies might know that there has been some admin issues (nothing to be done by us but it generated lots of heat on social media) and in my position as the USA national rep I got hammered with emails. In addition I did a presentation last week for the Friends of the National Archives that took up more time than I originally planned. Suffice it to say - the third Thursday in July snuck up ...

Tuesday's Tip - Get your sleep this week!

FamilySearch.org has a 24-hour indexing event planned for July 20-21st. If everyone in the LVUG Community indexed one batch - FamilySearch and genealogists worldwide would be up 664 batches . I'm in - how about you? I use FamilySearch.org site and appreciate the indexes and scans available free of charge to all of us. I am a big fan of their online tutorials (check out the Learning tab) and I have made use of the microfilm and books at the Family History Library. Indexing is a way to give back and is something we can all do. If you want to have some fun with it - join DearMYRTLE as she hosts a GeneaSleepOver - more informatin at her blog ( http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2014/07/dearmyrtles-geneasleepover-worldwide.html ) https://familysearch.org/blog/en/join-worldwide-indexing-event/?cid=hp1-1032

How do you use Potential Problems report?

I'm off work for the next few days and decided it was a good time to print a Potential Problems Report.  It's only 20 pages...lol.  This should make for a fun few days!  Do you use the Potential Problems Report to clean up your database or another type of report??

Tuesday's Tip (on Thursday) - Dates and Searching in Legacy..

W ell I am two days late but pushing this tip on a day that starts with T so hopefully it is all good. Tomorrow (Friday 11 Jul 2014) is an added webinar day with Legacy Webinars hosted by Geoff Rasmussen. The topic will be Legacy-related (that's always nice when these webinars cover working with Legacy). If you have not registered, you might want to. They will be covering some of the important basics in Legacy - dates and searching . There is a handout and it is available to all. Why not download it and check it out. We should take advantage of opportunities to learn more about how to use our genealogy program and this will be a good chance to see how things work in Legacy version 8.0. If you can't make it live (I know that I'll be traveling then) you can always watch the recorded version. Oh, and be sure to ask your questions on dates and searching and get answers from the Legacy team.

A problem with my Legacy 8 syncing with Family Tree.

I just discovered a problem with my Legacy 8 syncing with Family Tree. I just synced a recently deceased aunt and noticed a strange source that shows in my Legacy FamilySearch file.  It is a Harrington Family history book. So I checked to see if I had accidentally added this source to her but it does not show up in her sources when I look at her individual record in Legacy. I looked at her sister and see there is a source listed for her in Legacy FamilyTree with a Massachusetts Vital Record source that is not a source for her.  Again that source does not show up when I look at her individual record.  Would others who are linked to FamilySearch please check there files and let me know if this is happening to you or if it is just lucky me that is having this happen.  I am putting this under Discussion because I know how to do it.  Just want feedback. Thanks!

How to enter census events?

Image
I'm new to Legacy 8 and wonder if anyone has advice for how to enter Census Events.  What do you put in the Notes section and how do you format the information?

Question about entering a deed in events.

When entering a deed in events, do you use the date of the deed was signed or the date when the sale was registered?  Any suggestions would be helpful.

My chart is not printing MRINs - help.

I'm trying to print out my pedigree charts and although the box "Print MRIN" is selected, they will not print out on the chart. Has anyone else experienced this? I looked for any conflicting settings, but I can't find any.

Were do you put your proof reports in Legacy?

For those who use Evidentia, where do you put your proof reports in Legacy? Do you put them in research notes or do you attach them to something else?

Question about the Families app.

I was looking at the Families app in the Apple store. It doesn't get very good reviews, especially for Legacy 8. Can anyone in this community give me a review? Is it worth the $15? I use the Ancestry App, but would like to have my Legacy family tree information with me since that's my main program.

Tuesday's Tip - What projects are you working on?

Tuesday's Tip - Have we got marriages and marriage records out of our system? I still have some work to do on my marriage records and citations but I made a pretty good dent. Today is the start of a new month - July (and we are starting the second half of the year 2014!). How are you doing on any major tasks, projects or resolutions you gave/made for yourself in 2014? It might be a good time to take a look at your list and tweak it if necessary. (1) The first day of the month is a great time to backup your Legacy database . No one wants to redo their data entry work. Whether you set your backups automatically or do them manually and/or sync your data to an external hard drive and/or the cloud and/or any other plan - remember to (a) check those settings , (b) do it , and (c) every so often check to make sure that your backup plan works (you might try restoring to see if what you asked for is what you got). And it doesn't hurt to have more than a plan B, have a plan C - sh...

Happy Canada Day!

Image
Photo by Clem Sim on Unsplash Take advantage of the one day of free records at Ancestry.ca. Doing a Legacy search for people either born or died in Canada brought up 64. That should keep me busy til midnight.

Not impressed with Legacy 8 - your thoughts?

I downloaded Legacy8 yesterday but am very disappointed. I will be continuing to use v.7, I think. I have many pictures and scans of documents in v.7 and don't want to take the time and energy to put them all into v.8, one by one. I thought they would be brought into v.8 automatically.

Is there a way to find each shared event in my database?

How do I find each shared event? A report or some way to find these events to tag them? I've looked but am not seeing anything..... it's probably right in front of my nose, but ......

Printing a pedigree chart and have questions.

Looking for some ideas to help a fellow Legacy user who is going on a research trip. Here is the gist of her question "I am going to be travelling a bit in Germany in about a month and I have one day set aside to research in an archive that has previously yielded a wealth of information on this particular family (I hired a researcher who went to the archive on my behalf).  Since the archive is only open for 6 hours, two days a week, this one day is my only chance so I want to maximize my results in any way that I can by the best preparation possible. I will not have help from the staff there and they don't speak any English anyway.  I am supposed to just bring a pedigree chart with me and can't bring very much into the archive. I am printing a pedigree chart and family group sheets (I am interested in all siblings, spouses, etc. and will likely copy/save anything with any of my surnames if I can - they make the copies for you and I can't take digital photo...
