Lumper versus Splitters.
Saw this on Twitter and thought it might be of interest to this group. It's a useful explanation of Lumpers vs Splitters -- i.e. how you organize your sources in Legacy. Hope the link comes through properly.

Ed Allard great explanation. I'm a lumper...I started out that way not knowing there was a name for it. I don't attach my images to the source at all...guess I could start doing that. I create an Event for just about everything and then all of the information is put in the Notes section of the Event. I like the way the Event shows up in the timeline rather than in the sources.
ReplyDeleteWith any genealogy software you need to add the image to the relevant citations. A book is a single source but can have lots of pages and therefore many images and similar citations.
ReplyDeleteHowever a certificate as a single document may be better as a single source rather than as part of a collection.
How you enter your citations may be more dependant on the organisational structure of the records and how you perceive them.
Great terminology! Now I have a name tag to pin on my sources. I lump findagrave citations but split personal correspondence. My problem is figuring out how to get citations to print out decently. Sometimes they look quite strange!
ReplyDeleteThat was great. Maybe a webinar or discussion could be done on how to fix sources. Mine seem to be a mess from my "newbee " years.
ReplyDeleteThis is great information. I'll pass it on to my LUG tomorrow! I do some lumping and some splitting...so am I a slumper or a litter? :-)
ReplyDeleteAfter 20 some years, it seems I have done both too. Thanks for the link.
