Tuesday's Tip returning in August.

Tuesday's Tip will return on August 4 and I can't wait (but I will have to). The longest move of house is almost done (my parents have to be out by July 30 and the house is pretty bare. We have a few things left in the kitchen, garage and shed. We have been to the new cottage, the recycling center and Goodwill more times in the past 3 weeks than I have been in the past 5 years (and I am a donater). It has been interesting to watch my parents as they part with some things and/or tell me why they need to have other things at their new place. We have found tools my grandfathers left to my dad (don't know if he used them but they are on the stay list). I have put together scads of small u-haul boxes and am now proficient with that tape dispenser thingie. Remind me again why we didn't hire professionals (oh right, my dad thought there would not be much to move and the move is only a couple of miles away). Yikes - run for the hills if you hear that from your parents.

Using Excel with my Legacy.

Image
I wanted a count of the number of people by generation starting from my g grandparents. I got the following in response to my question from Legacy. It's not perfect in that nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters, etc appear but I just deleted them. You still have to count them.  Hubby did some fancy pivot table in Excel but I just would have filtered. ________begin copy________________________________________ You can create a Descendant Focus Group to find the total number of descendants, but it doesn't indicate type of relationship and it includes spouses, so it's not totally accurate. What I would do is set the relationships to the starting person (Tools > Set Relationships), then go to Search > Find > Detailed Search tab and use the search as shown in the attached screenshot. In the Search List, click on Print and select the fields you want to include - don't forget "Relationship" .  Create the report in CSV, open that in your spread

Generating a count of people in Legacy family file.

How can I generate a count of the number of children, grandchildren, g-grandchildren, etc from one ancestor? I think it has something to do with tagging but I'm not sure.

How to access older posts?

The LVUG is great and thank you's to all that help and participate.  They remain in my EM acct. The "Facebook" part is as well - BUT how can we access "old" helps after a few months?  It really overloads my Facebook - and after a few days is gone.  Such good info disappears "for good"?  Or am I missing something?

Should I use one file or two files in Legacy?

Which is best, 1 file or 2?    I have just started entering into Legacy 8.0, just my father's side.  Before adding anyone on my mother's side, I was wondering if they should be TWO SEPARATE files, or have them all combined into one file?  I am NOT importing anything I currently have in Ancestry or the free version of MyHeritage, because I learned that a lot of it is incorrect.  I want my LEGACY 8.0 info to be CORRECT.  Thanks!

Using the repeat button in Legacy.

I can't remember if it was here or the Legacy User Group Facebook page where someone posted about using the 'Repeat' button when entering birth, death & marriage addresses.  Wherever it was I want to send out a BIG thank you.  I've always felt frustrated having to continually look up the addresses of cemeteries my ancestors frequently used but since finding out about the 'Repeat' button, I now adore entering cemetery details.  Thank you must also go to the Legacy people for making this facility available.

Question about reports in Legacy.

First an explanation.  My system......The File ID on a Source is level 1.  Examples:  CNS (Census), MLT (Military), MAR (Marriage), etc.  On each detail record attached to that Source, I expand the File ID.  Examples:  CNS 0001, CNS 0002, MTL 0001, MAR 0001, MAR 0002, etc.  This allows me to file any document by number, both in the Legacy media file and in acid-free sleeves in binders.  I can find anything very quickly! Now my question.....I need to create a report that gives me the Source, SourceID, Detail ID and Name associated to that Detail ID.  Does anyone know how to get that kind of report?

Entering military discharge in Legacy.

Image
Here are the screen shots of what I did for my dad's honorable discharge.  I think you have to click on each to see the total picture.

Best way to create ancestral line report?

What is the best or easiest way to create a report of one ancestral line?

How do I enter military discharge records?

For those of us in the USA who have had family members in the military, you know how vital discharge papers are - especially when you have to come up with them for various reasons. There are no source templates in Legacy for Honorable Discharge in the USA.  Sorry, but this really bothers me.  There are register templates and discharges from other countries, but not for the USA.  OK - now that I have vented............. Does anyone have a method they have used to source 'Honorable Discharge' papers?  I have several that I need to document. Thanks!

Here's the citation I made for Arkivdigital records.

Here's the citation I made for Arkivdigital records. Please, anyone, let me know if I can improve on this. My Swedes give me a headache whenever I try to source them.

Does anyone have a method to enter Swedish church records?

Does anyone have a method to enter Swedish Church Records?  I use Ancestry and ArkivDigital.  I wish there were templates like for England and Wales!

Missing people in my Legacy family file - help!

I must be having a senior moment. I set my mother as the Starting Person and then ran a relationship report. About 7,000 people. I did the same thing with my father. About 8,000 people. There are over 19,000 people in my database. Where are the other 4,000?

What is the repeat button for?

When using the repeat button that is on the burial address window, it  created a second location, with only the name of the cemetery.  Since I'm inputting tombstones from a local cemetery I thought this might be a short cut.  Is there something I should do to use repeat button instead of the select button?  What is the repeat button for?

No Tuesday'sTip this week or hangout this month.

My apologies to all here in the LVUG Community - there was no Tuesday's Tip this week and we won't have a hangout this month. My mom was in the hospital over the weekend and got out late Tuesday - she is fine but emergency room always a scare. On top of that, after years of talking about it, my parents put their home on the market in June (and sold it that weekend). Needless to say the process of selecting the new home (a independent retirement community) and organizing the move has made the past 6 weeks a bit of a whirl for all of us (especially one of my sisters and me as we happen to be close by). Everything will be done and my parents moved by month-end (a great 2 bedroom cottage with lots of amenities). Long story short - will back on track by the end of July! Really appreciate my fellow moderators who have welcomed new members, answered questions and provided tips . It is all about working together here at the LVUG Community.

Hello from Kansas City, Missouri.

So happy to find this group.  I've been working on my genealogy for about 5 years, love Legacy Family Tree Software and want to use it to the max!  Hoping to learn from you and contribute when I can. I got hooked on genealogy when visiting the Swedish museum in Minneapolis.  I felt like - these are my people and I know nothing about them.  Made me feel a little lost.  What a journey I started!

Hi my name is Trish from New Zealand.

Hi my name is Trish and I am from New Zealand. I am just a beginner so love this group. Could one of you clever people tell me if it is possible to run Legacy on two computers with one subscription. If so how do I do it.

G’Day, I’m Bob Thompson of Queensland.

G’Day, I’m Bob Thompson of Yeronga, Queensland. (That’s in Oz by the way). I’ve been “playing” with my family tree since 1983 when I found a book in which I could record family details. It was more of a curiosity then. The problem with doing genealogy research was life would get in the way and I would stop. Then every five years or so the “bug” would bite and I would do a bit more research. I found the Ancestry program in 2002 and that allowed be to expand my view of genealogy. Then, during one of my hiatuses, Ancestry.com took over the world and kept sticking their hand out for money. I discovered Legacy in about 2012, imported my Gedcom file and have not looked back. I found out about you guys last Sunday when I went to a Legacy User Group that is run in association with the Genealogical Society Queensland. Thus, here I am.

Migrating from FamilyTreeMaker to Legacy - questions.

Hi all!  In need of advice. I have been trying to decide how to move my family file from FTM to Legacy.  Its a mess.  Lots of info but the sources are horrible.  If there are any at all listed.  I have all of my paper files tho.  Should I just started physically transferring my info and correcting all of the errors, or transfer a GEDCOM file?  I am going to try to use Clooz along with Legacy, and I believe it will import/export from Legacy.  All suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks?

Printing pictures in Legacy reports.

Image
How do you get the pictures from the Individual Information screen to print out on reports. For instance under birth I add a baby picture, baptism I add a picture of the family at the baptism. For burial I like to have a picture of the headstone. I cannot get these pics to print out on reports. The other thing I wanted to do was to add a family picture for different years to the marriage and get it to print out all of the pictures so you can see the changes in the family over the years. What I have done since I could not figure it out is add an event for each and add a picture to that. See picture attached of what I created just not the way I wanted to. Appreciate any ideas anyone would have for me.

Questions about a descendant report.

I have just created a descendant report with the Publishing Center in Legacy and even though this is a descendant report I wanted to add the stepchildren of my two brothers that we are very close to. It is okay if they are listed as stepchildren. I was hoping I could add my brother as an additional father but I can only add parents not parent. Is there a way to do this. I have published this for my family so they can see what I have accomplished in the last 20 years of researching. The book turned out wonderful as I wanted to add a lot of picutures so what I did is add an event called "Family" several times under the marriage of the couple. There are different dates and I added the appropriate picture for that year. It is nice to see how the family changed through the years. I tried to do it just under the marriage and add the different pictures but I could not get it to print the additional pictures, only the preferred picture. Any comments on different ways to do with woul

Question about transcribing documents in Legacy.

I am currently trying to save and transcribe documents and correspondence from family members that have been collected over a very long time from 1844 to 2010. This includes travel postcards, letters of everyday thoughts, family goings-on, etc. I think it helps document what they were doing and where they went. My question is do I put selected items in the events to show where they were or collect everything under research notes or in a Word document? The items are in paper and images as the item belonged to someone else. I have been placing snippets in the medical notes when they tell of their illness, diagnosis and general feelings on health and documenting where the statements came from. I put some in events such as a postcard saying an uncle was taking the train to North Dakota. He was in construction at the time. In some cases without the letters I would not know where these people lived, worked and any thing else about them. Am I on the right track?

How to enter a name?

Over the weekend after I got my data base naming mess straightened up (thanks again) I found the link I had been looking for regarding the identity of a person I suspected for years was a relative. Now the question is do: I enter him in Legacy with the name he arrived under or use the name he went by on all other documents (censuses, newspaper articles, legal papers, etc. I know he is the same person as his Naturalization Papers show the name change. Never had this problem before, usually just have. Had to enter AKA's which were nicknames or misspellings and not complete name changes. Thanks in advance!

New to LVUG community.

Hello, I am Debby Flood.  I am new to the group but not new to genealogy.  I started about 40+ years ago, but was teaching myself.  I have been using Legacy since it first came out, but I know I don't maximize its capabilities.  I would like to learn more about the finer points of the program to make my research easier.  I am glad to join the group.

Tuesday's Tip - a little bit on blueheads and user settings.

A  little bit on "blueheads" and a walk through for "* user settings *" (those lovely colors and fonts we each use to make Legacy our own). Learn how to save them, load them, and how to get back to the default. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DJsIvD8IF4

Question about a passenger manifest record.

At what point do you say this passenger manifest record is most likely the person I have been searching for when you have exhausted every other conceivable and inconceivable spelling? Or don't you ever? Where can I go to learn more about how complete the passenger lists are. I have this little bird on my shoulder saying you found them but ...

Hello - new to LVUG community.

Hello. I am Dennis Sutton, a new member of this group. I have been doing research for over 25 years. I use Legacy 8. I switched to Legacy 3 years ago. Prior to Legacy I used The Master Genealogist for 8 years.

Question about Legacy master surname list.

I inadvertently  checked the box "Always save the change without asking" on the Master surname list. How do I get it back?

Cleaning up my Legacy files - question.

Image
Somehow I have managed to gather together all sorts of Legacy files all over my computer. What I am wanting to do is back up my current two working files onto my external hard drive, then come back and delete all the files in this mess. Want to be able to just have my two working files so that I don't keep opening the wrong file, working in it and later opening another and working on it only to discover I have partial files everywhere! I apparently never learned how to open and close files properly. Help! I'm afraid to do anything for fear I will inadvertently delete the very files I want to keep. Thanks for your help!

Trying to figure out how to cite an email.

Trying to figure out how to cite an email.  Tessa Keough I am interested to know how you do since you are a lumper like me.  Anyone one please show me how you do it.  Trying to figure out what's going to work for me.  Thanks!
