Thanksgiving & StoryCorps Day of Listening.

Thanksgiving is a little over a week away. In the USA that means many of us will make a trip - either across town or across country - to be with family and friends. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it focuses on family, giving thanks (we go to mass), lots of great food, and just visiting all day with everyone. There is usually a football game on in one room, a puzzle in another, family members who arrive from a distance (this year Minnesota is the most distant state represented in our gathering), siblings catching up, nieces and nephews filling us in on school and activities, and pies by Chuck (my brother-in-law). We make a weekend out of it and get together for breakfast (usually only the adults make it!), go to the movies, and walk the lake (4 miles the day after Thanksgiving eating). The other thing we do as a family is the StoryCorps Day of Listening. This year it is so simple and such a great opportunity to be part of history. Visit StoryCorps website to le

Working with a master family file after a merge.

If I create a master Family file after merging all my little bits and pieces that have been previously created how do I work with that master file? Am I limited to working with it on one machine or can the file be synchronized with other machines? What is the best way to add information? Any help is appreciated.

Using Legacy 9 - how to merge two family files?

Using Legacy 9 what is the easiest way to merge two family files? Does anyone know how the notes are handled?

Poll - How much time per week do you spend on DOING your genealogy?

Image
Quick Question for All - HOW MUCH TIME PER WEEK (on average) DO YOU SPEND WORKING ON YOUR GENEALOGY (not classes, webinars, volunteer work, etc. - but doing research on your extended family, working with records & resources, working in Legacy, etc.). And if you want to comment and explain what types of things you do and time, great - otherwise you can just take the poll. Thanks

Tuesday's Tip - 2 things today

Image
Tuesday's Tip - 2 things today 1. US National Archives hosts a virtual genealogy fair in October and this Wednesday is the day. The schedule is shown at their website and you can catch the talks live or watch the recordings (they will be archived at YouTube). In years past, it has been a two day fair, but it looks like the budget cuts I heard about this summer are taking their toll. To check Wednesdays's schedule visit their website here https://www.archives.gov/calendar/genealogy-fair . AT THE LEAST, download their handouts! 2. Now that we have all had some time to play with Version 9 of Legacy (if you upgraded), what are your thoughts - the good and the bad. What do you have questions about or are having a tough time navigating? If you have remained with Version 8 of Legacy - what are your issues? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below and over the next few months, we will give it a go to help each other navigate the features of Legacy.

Using cloud for Legacy 9 files - what does it save?

I was surprised when I tried to use my Cloud stored Legacy 9 files they were only used for storage. I was hoping that I would be able to use my cloud-based files to keep my other machines in sync. Am I missing something? The real power of storing files in the cloud is their ability to be shared.

Tessa, I loved your video presentations.

Tessa, I loved your video presentations and have learned alot from them. Have you considered doing one on Publishing Center? - creating the chapters and the proofing, when to create PDFs, where to save all the reports and putting it all together with any extra charts to be included and the final printing. Those infamous baby steps would be so helpful as the manual/help section only explains the effect of each option. I didn't see anything in the archives or did I miss it?

Having a glitch with locations - help.

I believe I am running into a glitch, but wanted to ask if anyone else has the same issue. I've been cleaning up my locations list. I have several locations where the list of "People using this location" do not use that location at all. At least, I cannot find where that location is being used anywhere in their individual page. I have used the file maintenance to no avail. The problem persists for a few locations. Suggestions? Oh, and I'm using Legacy 9.0.0.198. Deluxe Edition on a PC running Windows 10 Home.

Any Mac Parallels and Windows users here?

Any Mac Parallels and Windows users that feel up to the challenge of walking me through that quagmire?? LOL I have installed both, but, I'm just not sure about screen views, etc. To date, Support assistance from Parallels has been polite, but, failures. I will also need a few hints on installing Legacy, since I have my photos installed on C drive on the ole Windows machine and now they will be installed on my user name on the Mac. I have this gut feeling that Legacy is gonna need to relink all of them?? Good grief, there are over 18,000???? Well, maybe what I need is someone to hold my hand and pour my drinks?? Of course, this is something that should be attempted OFF group. Thanks

I am using Legacy 8 and it is not showing maps.

I am using Legacy 8, and when I go to the master Location list the map is not showing and it is not verifying The location, I have show map checked . Does anyone know how to fix this?

Misspellings in census records and transcribing information.

Considering the extent of misspellings in census records, how far do you go in re-transcribing before entering in your database? Or do you?

I am working with Legacy 9 Photo Album and Scrapbook - questions.

I am working with Legacy 9 Photo Album and Scrapbook. I have tagged just a few of the 25 pictures I have linked to an individual. In Media Gallery, under Options, there is a selection to "sort media by date." But, I did NOT enter a date into that field in the description of the pictures. Is there any other way to rearrange the pictures to be in chronological order? Also, once I have set up a format within Photo Album that I like, where can I save those settings for future and consistent style printings? Or do I just need to do a screen shot and save it that way to reference at a later date.

Why we monitor the LVUG community.

It seems that every so often we get an influx of people who want to join the Legacy Virtual Users' Group Community. We moderators do our best to check the individuals before we accept or reject them. Reasons to reject : (1) clearly appear to be bots - no information, no posts, no other communities followed. (2) clearly in sales - we don't sell anything on this site and are not interested in our Community being targeted for sales. (3) blue heads with no information posted that we can see relates to family history or genealogy - I know some don't include avatars but if there is nothing that indicates a person has an interest in genealogy we question why they want to join. BUT sometimes an individual gets past that first check (although our moderators are great) and if that happens, we usually catch it by their posts. Every so often I go through the list of members to make sure we don't have bots. If you are here for genealogy and Legacy Family Tree disc

Using notes in Legacy for wills - comments.

I want word processed copies of wills in order to put them into Legacy notes if I want to put them there. I have a copy of a literal transcription of a 1683 will and thought I would be smart to use that with OCR and would save myself some word processing time. Unfortunately, I didn't consider that the language in the transcription would make that almost impossible. OCR can't deal with fift (fifth), ffuller (Fuller), Compitent (competent), etc. Many of you probably have already dealt with this, but I thought I would share. It is hard to word process something like this because you yourself "want" to type the words correctly.

How do I get nicknames to print in Legacy reports?

Anyone know how to get nicknames to print in reports? I only get the 'main' name.

Suggestion for Legacy - more notes sections.

I would put this under Suggestions if there was such a category. I am still using v.7.5 with no intention of upgrading so it's irrelevant for me but I still like the idea. Here it is: an additional tab in the Notes section (General/Research/Medical) for something called something like Scratch Pad. This would be a dumping ground for work in progress, never to be printed in reports but just for collecting. For instance, I have a habit of searching census records, en mass, or marriage records, or death records, or what-have-you, and adding the information and citation into Research Notes to properly enter and cite later. Later could be by the time the number is up around 1,000. Is. Meantime, my Cuz uses Research Notes for actual, you guessed it, research notes. So and so may have had a second marriage, based on blah, blah, blah. Her opinions that matter. I would like to print out her opinions in book reports because I think they do matter. On the other hand, my collec

Any news about a MAC version of Legacy?

Have we heard any more about possible MAC version of Legacy? AND If you run Legacy on a MAC, could you briefly review your set up, Parallels? etc. Thanks.

How to enter Mayflower ancestor location information?

I recently verified that I have a Mayflower ancestor. I am entering locations and need suggestions on how to enter Plymouth. Plymouth, Massachusetts? There was no state then or even a colony and certainly no county. Can anyone tell me how they have dealt with this type of early location? Thanks very much!

Thoughts about Legacy/Millennia sale to MyHeritage.

This past week all of us learned that Legacy/Millennia was sold to MyHeritage. It is and will be uncharted territory for most of us as we have enjoyed Legacy's independent small shop nature. Many of us of most familiar with Ancestry and FindMyPast as far as subscription sites and, of course, FamilySearch as a free site for our genealogy records research. Personally I have only had interactions with MyHeritage at conferences and seminars and everyone has been professional. I have placed my dad's Ancestry DNA on their website and have had no issues with unwanted contacts. I follow the posts by in the know genealogists such as Pat Richley-Erickson Judy G. Russell and Randy Seaver - they always provide unbiased and insightful thoughts on changes in the #genealogy and #familyhistory landscape. If they haven't yet, I am sure there will be some discussion in the coming days. The most important thing for all of us to keep in mind is that Legacy Family Tree Software is sta

Word received that Legacy was sold to MyHeritage. No immediate changes expected.

How to create a source citation report for a specific focus group - help.

I am trying to create a source citation report for a specific focus group. Can someone walk me through creating a focus group and then tagging that group? I think I will then be able to print a source citation report for the tagged group. Or does someone have a better way to do that? Thanks.

How do I transfer my Legacy files to a new computer?

I just got a new computer, and I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out how to transfer my Legacy files. The instructions made it sound like once you put it on your flash drive, you just download the Legacy software and it uploads. That didn't really work right, so then I started transferring my 20,000 missing media files. I thought I had it, but then it's all gone again. I don't really understand. The new computer wants to save everything to "one cloud" and I just want to save it on my computer. Sorry, I'm really confused here. Any suggestions?

Questions about adding a census.

Adding a census. I started in Chapter 3 of Legacy Family Tree Version 9 Unlocked. On Page 70 Geoff added an unlinked male named John Williams. When I got to Page 92 where he showed the updated Chronology view of John Williams all I had was a Census and Occupation entry. Where did all the other info he had come from? I did not have a birth, anything about his spouse or children being born. Does each of these items have to be keyed in as an event? Does the info come from info keyed for John Williams?

Update: on my Legacy acting up.

Update: Resorted to an uninstall and new download for the reinstall. Finally working again after 90 minutes of lost time. HELP! Just installed the latest update of Legacy 9 on my PC (Windows 10). Seemed to run ok but Legacy will not start up at all now. Nothing. Looking in the programs directory, Legacy.exe is missing. Instead, there is a LegacyX.exe file. Double clicking that does not start anything (and nothing shows up in the task manager). Some sort of glitch in the updater? If so, it should be many more people than me since it came out ~6/13. Any ideas other than to uninstall and reinstall?? How do I protect my files which are not backed up to today?

Some questions about locations in Legacy.

Hi All I am very confused by the above. From reading the manual etc I get the impression that all locations should be of the form... City, County, State/Province, Country Theses should be provided with commas left to indicate missing data. Okay that's fine but what do I do with house names/numbers, street names and districts etc. For example I live in England and was born just round the corner from Penny Lane in Liverpool (Yes as in the Beatles). Anyway I lived @ 15 Gorsedale road, Mossley Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom. So how do I map that to Legacy's standards. This all gets more complicated when I try to sync with Family Search :-( Anyway I hope someone can help as I don't want to modify some 5000 odd locations and then find they don't fit. Tuesday's Tip - a bit late in the day

For some interesting genealogy education, why not watch one or more of the sessions that were live-streamed during the recent Southern California Genealogy Society #scgs2017 Jamboree. Lots to choose from and all the big players were there in the Exhibit Hall - including +Legacy Family Tree Software. Although lots of buzz was about #DNA, there were sessions on a variety of topics and DNA had it's own day on Thursday. Check out the schedule and sign up for the sessions - you will receive an email with instructions and be able to watch the live-streamed/recorded sessions for free until July 10. Thanks to +Ancestry for sponsoring and handling the recordings. http://www.genealogyjamboree.com/ http://streaming.webcastandbeyond.com/jamboree/

Questions about linking images.

A couple question about linking images (noting that I've chosen to have a directory/folder of my choosing to contain all of my images linked to people in my family tree, telling Legacy to leave an image where it is when I link it to an individual in my tree): First, is it all right to link a given image to more than one individual? I've been hesitant to do this for fear of causing problems. And second, is there a way to determine which individual an image is linked to? Thanks very much

Will you be in Burbank, California this weekend?

Will you be in Burbank, California this weekend? Lots of genealogists and family historians will be attending #SCGSJamboree, one of the best conferences out there with great speakers, interesting topics, and an Exhibit Hall (all under one very manageable roof). Legacy Family Tree Software will be there. And if you can't make it to Burbank, #SCGS will come to you with live-streaming of several presentations. Why not put a little genealogy education on your calendar this weekend?

What version of Legacy do you use?

Image
Okay Legacy Users time for a question! Legacy 9 is flying off the shelves (the real ones and the internet shelves!) and Geoff Rasmussen teased us with more than a few of the new features over the past year (and he did a great presentation on using Legacy 9 recently - look or it in the Legacy Video Archives). I am wondering how many in our Legacy Virtual Users' Group Community are using Legacy 8 (in any of its iterations) AND how many have made the leap to Legacy 9. Also if you are using the Free Version of Legacy or a Pre-Legacy 8 version be sure to check that. Pretty easy Tuesday for all of us!

Pay attention to security with our computers and online lives.

If the last week has taught us anything, it is that we need to be smart and savvy with our computers. We need to pay attention to our operating systems, be sure to install the updates we receive, make a system restore of our computers, back up to an external drive (or two) or an external drive and the cloud, and pay attention when we open email attachments or click on links. This is a variation on the theme "buyer beware" - it is "computer user beware." The recent ransomware hack involves computer systems that continue to operate Windows XP. Now you may have a good reason to be using XP but be aware that XP is 4 generations removed from the most recent Windows 10 (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1). There is a patch for this security flaw but we do know that Microsoft is no longer supporting XP. Geoff Rasmussen recently shared the story of his hard drive failure (and I am sure Geoff is someone who updates his operating system regularly). He makes backups and he also uses a

Cousins - a tree or a forest?

Cousins. The easiest way to turn your family tree into a family Jungle is to start adding cousins. My husband's family has ten kids in about every generation! How do you handle this? I Have made contact with some of my cousins from his side, and it's great. But where do you draw the line in terms of adding names??? Thoughts? Experiences? Please discuss.

I have benefited so much from the MRIN method of organizing papers and photos!

Image
I have benefited so much from the #MRIN method of organizing papers and photos! (I used the method described here: http://fileyourpapers.com/legacy/legacy.html ). Since I was revamping already, I saw the value of having the most recent families being at the lowest numbers. So I renamed all of my MRINs starting with my husband and I as number 1, and just went from parent marriage to parent marriage from there. So his parents’ MRIN is 2, my parents’ is 3, his father’s parents are MRIN 4, etc. As a math teacher, I noticed an interesting feature of this method. Actually it may seem a bit obscure, but in my case it was very useful. I have a family tree which was given to me, and it contains records back five centuries. So one part of my tree is really long, whereas most are really short. So what is the MRIN for that long line? I didn’t have to draw a pedigree chart with thousands of name to know the right MRIN – I just did the math! I’m talking too much, so I’ll stop =] b

Are you using Legacy 9?

Good morning! How is everyone doing with Legacy 9??

To spring clean or play with Legacy 9 - what to do?

So I was planning to discuss the importance of spring cleaning (no not the house!) - before Legacy 9.0 was released because it sounded like they were getting close. And of course today Legacy released version 9.0! Now keep in mind you can purchase the upgrade and take your time - don't feel the need to rush. Why do I say that? Because you want to make sure you backup your Legacy 8 program and files and have that in case you have any issues. If you are like me, something is bound to go glitchy. I also tend to read a bit about people's experiences & I make sure I understand the instructions. Is the new version going to override the old version? Can we go back once we go to 9.0? Any other issues we should be aware of? Take your time, read all about the release and know that just like the 1940 US Census release - we don't need to rush, it will be there tomorrow, we can take our time and not get ahead of ourselves. So my Tuesday's Tip - wonderful news about Lega

Census records of poor quality - check another resource.

Image
I have a teeny tiny hint. If you have census records with poor quality, consider checking Ancestry for its latest version of the document. They have proprietary software that cleans things up nicely.

How to enter citing this record from FamilySearch into Legacy?

Image
Sorry if this is a duplicate question - I just can't find anything about it. When I find a record on FamilySearch.org, it has a wonderful "Citing This Record" at the bottom. I have no idea how to put that into Legacy sources. I've attached a photo of one of the records for reference. Thanks!

Using Legacy Media Folder.

If I rename photo's that are in Legacy Media Folder do I have to relink the picture's one at a time?

Updating master sources - a dream.

So in my moments of far-flung fantasy, as I take a break from updating my sources (one by one, eventually generation by generation) I imagine that I find someone who has uploaded a Legacy source file with no real people, but Master Sources for every census, major record source (SSN, etc.) and typical site (findagrave...) I know there are basic source examples out there, but what a great resource it would be. And of course, there are complications (e.g. I found many census records on my local library site, or on microfiche many moons ago) but really, I'd pay for a copy of that base of data.

Citing sources - how to clean up my Legacy files.

So that slayer of all documentation efforts, citing sources, is really a drag for me right now. Can anyone direct me to a good reference for cleaning it all up? I really took a hit due to Ancestry adding multiple citations. For example, I have three citations for my grandfather's name, two for his birth and still other facts all from the exact same census. So I have been going through every one, checking to see if any have images or extra details, and erasing all of them except one. But how do I relink all of the facts back to the same source citation? And is there an easier way? Any insights appreciated.

Tuesday's Tip - learn by watching others do something.

Tuesday's Tip - a great way to learn is to watch how others do something. A good example is one of my favorite genealogy shows TLC's Who Do You Think You Are? The first episode of this season is now online (you can watch without commercials). What to watch out for - references to the Great Migration (for all of you whose ancestors came to the colonies early on) and to research in English records (those go way back and it helps to read Latin!). A great resource for the Great Migration is the New England Historic Genealogical Society NEHGS (they have a wonderful website at AmericanAncestors.org). Watch the show for some family and social history, a bit of treachery, and all kinds of ideas for records you might want to include with your research if your roots are British. Of course - then you could add all that information into the events/facts section of your Legacy family file. How I wish one of the WDYTYA shows would follow one lucky "regular person" doing th

Changing the font colors in Legacy.

Image
OOPS - I think I figured it out. See end of post. I have a question about changing font colors in the Index, name list etc. I really do not enjoy the red/blue font. I have browsed around and just cannot find the way to change it. Can anyone give me specifics? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I was trying to change the color from the index, but I didn't see the option there. But when I went to the family View tab, I was able to choose CUSTOMIZE > COLOR CHANGE MODE ( under 9.1 Main Color Windows) and then choose to change male and female text fonts. =] Feel free to delete if this is just clutter. =/

Color-coding MRIN filing.

This is a VERY small thought, but maybe helpful to someone. After watching the seminar on archiving files, I noted that someone used the color coding in Legacy and applied it to their physical files. So I thought about the MRINs. I had already renumbered the first 4-5 generations so that they were in a logical order. I also was thinking about the find your papers method of organizing physical papers. And I realized that the method could easily be applied to my digital history photos. So I set up a master file location, and in that file, I have folders named things like "MRIN-5 Johnson-Smith" where every picture I have for the johnson-smith family will go. I have tried several methods - renaming and name tagging... but this is the best thing I have ever tried. Decisions are easy and file locations easily found.

FamilySearch has released its schedule of webinars/seminars for March.

Just One Thing - JOT this down - FamilySearch has released its schedule of webinars/seminars for March (yes it is March!). So if you are in Salt Lake City you can attend in person OR if you are not you can attend from home. 36 classes that cover several countries research and some research methodology. If you haven't settled on a research log yet, learn more about them (Mar 9). If you are working on your Irish ancestors, 4 sessions (Mar 17 - of course!), just starting with Revolutionary War Records, join the session (Mar 23). And that is just a sampling. Information about registration and how to attend is found at the AncestryInsider site. http://tinyurl.com/z53n4nb And, of course, all the information you gather on your ancestors can go right into your Legacy family files! So JOT that down and see if there is something at the Family History Library webinar/seminar series to help you.

Using a photo instead of Legacy icons.

I can't figure out how to get a photo to show up where the male or female icon is. I have set a preferred photo, but it isn't there. What am I doing wrong? Or an I wrong and Legacy doesn't do that? Thanks in advance. -Leslie

Tuesday's Tip - Backup your Legacy files.

Tuesday's Tip - Today is the last day of February - where did the month go? Here is a quick tip that many of us forget to take the time to do. It is time to backup our Legacy files (whether you do it on the last day of the month or first day of the month - the key is to DO IT!). No matter if you back up regularly when you work in your Legacy files, I think it is a good idea to backup each month. Then every six months go ahead and delete backups you no longer need. You never know when something will happen - either a hard drive crash, a cloud glitch, or a jump drive lost. Backup to 2 different places (I use the cloud and an external hard drive). Let's be safe rather than sorry.

I have a suggestion for a Tuesday tips or a video.

Having an image for every record in Legacy - my summer project.

Image
So I am prepping to make the best use of my time when I am paying for Ancestry this summer. Cleaning up sources (Ancestry really did me wrong on that score, so there is a lot of cleanup.) But one thing I am planning to do is make sure I have an image for every citation that should have one. The quickest, most effective way for me to do this is to use a placeholder image. When I find a "missing" image, I add a placeholder image/file, named by my conventions (i.e. Vital Records Birth Cornelius Wood Alexander.) This way, I can easily see in my media file which records are missing images. AND when I download the missing image, I can simply replace that image. My new data will be a simple "save as" when I find it. (this image is free to use and share.)

New to LVUG community.

Yippee! So happy to be here! Been enjoying the tutorial videos and all of the posts. Glad to be a part.

Tuesday's Tip - Using Facebook with Friends, Groups & Messages.

Tuesday's Tip - another quick video to show you a little bit about using Facebook with Friends, Groups & Messages. Once again I found a message that had been "filtered" for me which I had not seen. Issues with uploading my Legacy Gedcom to Ancestry.

I decided to upload my Legacy gedcom to Ancestry.com. The media files don't seem to transfer (other than the information about them), so I uploaded it all to Family Tree Maker. It is currently syncing to Ancestry, but I noticed that there are multiple copies of the media images on FTM. Does that mean I saved them wrong in Legacy? For example, I'm pretty sure I only attached the 1900 census image to someone once when doing the source and then again in the event. For some reason there are 8 copies of it in FTM and maybe in Ancestry, not sure yet. I can delete them, but is there a way to prevent this from happening.
