Any Mac Parallels and Windows users here?

Any Mac Parallels and Windows users that feel up to the challenge of walking me through that quagmire?? LOL

I have installed both, but, I'm just not sure about screen views, etc. To date, Support assistance from Parallels has been polite, but, failures.

I will also need a few hints on installing Legacy, since I have my photos installed on C drive on the ole Windows machine and now they will be installed on my user name on the Mac. I have this gut feeling that Legacy is gonna need to relink all of them?? Good grief, there are over 18,000???? Well, maybe what I need is someone to hold my hand and pour my drinks??

Of course, this is something that should be attempted OFF group.

Thanks

  1. I'm not sure how much help I can be on the technical side - I'm running slightly outdated versions of both Parallels and OS. I'll be glad to try to help as I can, though.

I'm pretty sure I run mine in Modality mode. If you haven't already, I suggest you Google parallels desktop modality mode (etc.), and see what you can find there. As with Legacy, sometimes the best help is not official (like this user group!).

Modality allows you to use the Windows window as if it were another Mac app. This lets you switch easily between your other Mac apps and Windows. That just happens to be my personal preference, although if you run it on full screen, you'll certainly have more room for your Legacy screens.

As to installing Legacy, I can tell you that you will likely get an error message when you install it (and every time you open it afterwards), telling you there is an "Unrecognized Media Folder" "The following incomplete media folder could not be found on your computer ..." I checked with Legacy when I first started, and they assured me that they were aware of the issue, but hadn't found a fix for it. They also assured me that it didn't actually affect the usage of anything, and as far as I can tell, they are correct. It apparently doesn't matter how you answer this message - I usually just hit Enter. Despite this message, Legacy never seems to have trouble locating my media. I don't actually have my media stored in the default location, anyway, but I think it would find it there regardless.

As to relinking all of your files, my experience is that as long as the actual file name of the media doesn't change, Legacy does a pretty good job of locating and relinking files. In other words, the path to your files will likely change, and you'll probably be all right. Just don't get creative and decide this is a good time to clean up the file names themselves.

I do recommend (I think I'm right on this) that you go ahead and save your media files in the Documents folder on your Mac, rather than trying to get them into the C: drive on your Parallels-Windows structure. My experience is that finding things that Windows has "put" somewhere can be quite tedious and difficult, since they tend to be many, many layers down in the folder structure. Legacy should still be able to find them wherever they are on the hard drive, but having them in Documents will make it easier on you to add new items into your existing folder structure. At least it works that way for me.

Don't know if any of this helps. Getting this set up can be a royal pain, all right, but once you get it working, it's pretty maintenance-free (at least for me). Of course, I've also studiously ignored all of the pleas to upgrade both OS and Parallels, and that will catch up with me eventually.

    Good luck!

  2. Thank you Diana Mullin. Your suggestions and ideas are quite helpful. This morning, my son, who I have discovered, is quite the Mac hacker (LOL) managed to get me to the point of full screen viewing of Mac and Windows stuff.

No changing of actual file names, CHECK! I was not going to, but, that is a good reminder.

I was not going to store the data files, ON the Windows side, as I have already been told that is not a good way to go. Again, CHECK, and thank you for your input.

I am not sure bout Modality mode. But, I will investigate.

Thank you for the heads up on Unrecognized Media Folder. IF I see it when I get this installed I won't panic (much!!)

Thank you so much for your insight. I do appreciate it!

  3. I'm still in the "planning" stages. I actually wrote to Legacy support and they say I should load all multimedia ON the C drive in Windows.

Oh, My! LOL . Waiting for some feedback from son # 1, and if anyone else wants to jump in here, I would be so happy to hear your set ups.
