Which directories store Legacy data.

Neil Errey Replying to your earlier question about locations.  legacy 7 is installed in C:\legacy. legacy 8 is installed in C under program files. I think if you move it you will mess up both programs. Computer people can advise if this is so.  legacy 8 creates its own storage folder in Documents now. You can change the location of your media files if you want to keep them in C;\legacy but probably not a good idea because of possible (?) conflicts. I used to have mine in Dropbox but am experimenting with the default locations. I'm not sure I like it where Legacy wants it either but I am losing  massive amounts of free trial storage in Dropbox and need to find alternatives.

Posts here should be about Legacy and genealogy. Thanks

Recently we received a few posts that had nothing to do with Legacy Family Tree or Genealogy as it relates to Legacy. Thankfully, Google caught these, marked them as spam, and held them for the LVUG Community moderators me to reject/accept. Since the "member" posted 6 not on topic posts, and clearly doesn't belong here, she was removed. Linda McCauley Carol Stevens and I are pretty welcoming and will send a private message first if something is a little wonky as far as a post goes - BUT we will remove and ban spammers immediately. Just wanted to let you know.

Am I able to get a sorted list of birthdays from Legacy?

How do I get sorted lists for birthdays and is there a way to find out how many descendants there are from a given couple? Have a reunion this weekend and these are some last minute questions I'm trying to answer. Thank so much.

Just found out about the "Event clipboard."

Image
This makes entering a shared event so much easier that having to create the event for each person.  When you create a new event, you will see on the right hand side, underneath the Help button, two small buttons.  The button on the left is to copy the event to the "event clipboard."  After you have completed the data entry for an event you can click on this button. This will copy everything from that event to the "event clipboard."  Next go the person  who shares the event, and open add event.  Then using the button to the right you can paste all the information from the "event clipboard" and it will automatically fill in the four fields on the event menu and all other data associated with the event. This is almost as easy as using the new shared event feature in Legacy 8, but should get around the concerns that other have expressed in this community.

I am wondering how people are handling DNA matches.

I am wondering how people are handling DNA matches that they haven’t figured the connection yet.  I was thinking of adding an unattached person called “DNA Cousins” and attach people to that person until I figure out the actual connection.  That way, I can enter things that I do know about them as I find it out.  I would mark anyone I add private so they don’t show up anyplace.

Tuesday's Tip - Wow what a week!

I was in Salt Lake City last week for RootsTech/FGS 2015 and the Salt Palace was full of genealogists and family historians from all over the world. I met genealogists from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, parts of Europe, and we were told every State was represented except for West Virginia. Between the sessions and the exhibit hall, things were happening every moment. And then across the street was the Family History Library. I got to meet several LVUG Community members and that was a treat! The Legacy Family Tree booth was busy selling the program and various add-ons - but I don't think there were any demonstrations at their booth until the third or fourth day. Sadly I did not see any ribbons for Legacy (free advertisements that everyone seems to collect) so I could not add that to my lanyard and badge (darn). I understand from one of the booth employees that Geoff was unable to make the trip due to a bad back (surgery in his future apparently). I did hear that

Can I search for specific words within Events/Facts?

A number of ancestors had farms and Farm Schedules. I've transcribed the censuses and have included Farm Schedule # in the Events/Facts. I would prefer not to have to review each ancestor entered so far in order to tag and make a list.

Customizing your event sentences.

Image
+Leslie Wright Bagwell - regarding FROM dates in events.  Here's how I fixed that.  I edited the [Date] field in the event definition screen to read [onDate].  Also changed the [Place] field to read [inPlace].  Here is a shot of my Event Definition screen for census events and the resulting sentence at the bottom of screen.

Question about event sentences.

In the events, I can't figure out how to change the word FROM to ON. From is used on almost every date in the events fields. "He appeared on the 1870 Federal census from 28 May 1904 in Seattle, King, Washington, United States"

Is there such a thing as a certified or qualified Legacy trainer?

Is there such a thing as a Certified or qualified Legacy trainer? If so, how do you go about doing the course?

How to fix typos?

When filling in info to an event menu and a mistake is made but not noticed and saved - - can this error be corrected so it won't continually come up in future postings?. For example  - brith  or cenmsus

Tuesday's Tip - Will you be at RootsTech2015?

Still getting sorted at RootsTech/FGS. Met up with the Commonwealth Contingent (Jill Ball put together a "get to know each other" walk and dinner at the California Pizza Kitchen). It was great fun and I met a number of genealogists that I have only known online. Everyone had their genealogy cards with them and I am gathering quite the collection. I also got a chance a bit earlier in the day (at the just getting set up Salt Palace) to meet up with Linda McCauley for a moment - we started this LVUG Community together but have never met in the real world - what  a treat! If you will be at RootsTech/FGS - I hope we get the chance to meet up. And if you will be watching from home, the schedule for live streaming (these sessions will be recorded for later viewing) was published yesterday. Many of the FGS sessions are also be recorded (although not live-streamed, I believe the sessions will be available for purchase). If yesterday was any indication, it will be a busy coupl

How best to get my images from Ancestry into Legacy?

I'm wondering if there is any advantage of buying Family Tree Maker software, syncing it with an Ancestry tree, exporting a Gedcom and importing into Legacy versus downloading a Gedcom from Ancestry and importing into Legacy. I was specifically hoping that FTM would get the images from the sources when synced, but it doesn't appear to be the case. I think I'll just have to download images separately and attach them to my Legacy database after that.

Question about values at events window.

In the latest Legacy newsletter that just arrived today this page is referenced.  My question is what are those values listed below the Events window ((B: date) (C: date) etc.)?  Also, how do you set that to display (just in case it's something I want to add :-) ). thanks, james http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/.a/6a00d8341d219b53ef01bb07ed3c0b970d-pi

Problems using split screen - help.

Somehow my Legacy menu, after using split screen, has positioned itself too far to the right and I cannot access the scroll bar or anything on the extreme right side.

More about RootsTech.

J Paul Hawthorne just posted the link to the FamilySearch blog about the live-streamed RootsTech sessions. I told you we would be sure to post it when it became available. Why not take a look at the list, download the syllabus for any of the sessions that interest you ,and then follow along live or watch the recording. You can be a distance attendee of RootsTech/FGS. This year they have done an excellent job of including sessions on technology, methodology and ethnic research. I took a quick look at the sessions and a few of these were on my "toss a coin" because there are two sessions I want to attend. Now I don't have to make that choice. It's all good - are you planning to watch any of the sessions? #fgs2015   #rootstech2015   https://familysearch.org/blog/en/20-rootstech-sessions-grow-family-tree/

Legacy 'Not Responding' (freezing) - why?

Does anyone else have the problem of Legacy 'Not Responding' (freezing) when adding media? This is happening to me repeatedly & the only way out (that I've found) is to go to the Windows Task Manager so I can close Legacy but when I do that, I have to start over again attaching the media.

Question about RINs - help.

I know many/most of you are at Rootstech.  Despite my poor timing my RINs don't show in  the Family View.  Do you know how to get the RINs to show?  Thanks.

Quick question about sources in general.

I set up a source for a birth certificate.  There is quite a bit of data on the parents as well as the child.  Sometimes for the mother/father address all it has is a state name. I kind of feel that every nugget of info in my database should have as many sources as possible to strengthen the validity of the data. So in this birth certificate scenario I tend to use the BC as a source for the parent's birth place. I do this even when I know the parent's city/count/state from other info and the child's BC only has the state.  Is this going overboard with sourcing or do others do this also?

Finding the shared events feature lacking - thoughts?

I'm finally starting to use the share feature and am finding it lacking. Is there a way to print a master list of shared names. I don't see one. Has anyone else found the key? I would like to refer to the names that I don't have in my tree in case I run across a name that tickles my memory

Want to be able to search locations - issues.

Legacy has some tremendous search capabilities for people records in countless variants, which are enhanced by the use of tags, etc. But one of the major failings in my opinion is the ability to search Locations. Adjusting place names is part of my "do over". I want to search the Location List for certain words/names. I am not talking about finding what records/people use a location with a given word. I want a simple list of all the locations that contain that word. I'll use Washington as an example. It can appear as a state, a county, a township or a city and maybe a few other things. But you cannot easily search for all the place names with the word Washington and see those places in a handy list. Maybe you'd like to change the name of one or more of them to Washingbury, or whatever suits your fancy. The Find window on the Location List only works with the Sort selection you have established - it won't find a word anywhere in the place name.

Tuesday's Tip - Next week is RootsTech/FGS 2015 in Salt Lake City.

Are you going to RootsTech2015? - Great I hope to see you there. If you are not going, know that you can watch the live streamed sessions right at home (check out the RootsTech site for the schedule) AND you can download the syllabus for any of the sessions at the link provided below . These sessions cover a variety of topics so be sure to check them out. Also the Exhibit Hall is going to be busy and the software companies will be there in full force. Got any questions or suggestions for the Legacy Family Tree folks ? Put them right here and I will pass them on! Now to figure out what to pack!

How to add photos?

Hi I have just joined.I have Legacy 7.5 have only just started adding info but am wanting to know how do I add photos.

Is there a way to print out the Index View?

I have set up the columns the way I like them, but would like to print it out to put in my paper files. Yes, I still use paper occasionally. Have tried the help menu, options, etc with no luck. Would appreciate any help. I'm new to this group and have learned a lot just reading all the older posts. Thanks in advance for help.
