I am wondering how people are handling DNA matches.

I am wondering how people are handling DNA matches that they haven’t figured the connection yet.  I was thinking of adding an unattached person called “DNA Cousins” and attach people to that person until I figure out the actual connection.  That way, I can enter things that I do know about them as I find it out.  I would mark anyone I add private so they don’t show up anyplace.

  1. I'd like to know that myself. I'm working with a group of cousins who are closely related genetically to John Lee of Nansemond (JLN) but we don't know the connections yet. I have a bunch of documented names, some of which may be the same person, some connected, some not. I've just been entering them as unconnected individuals so far for lack of anything better.

  2. Thanks Hardy!  I am glad I am not the only one.  I was thinking if I make the DNA cousin person, it would be easier to group them.  I do have some other unconnected people for a family I was working on going backwards!

  3. that would group them alright but the downside is that you'd have to unlink them from the dna cousin person when and if you find a family to put them into.

  4. I am used to doing that anyway.  When I have grandkids in an obit without last names or they have several sons and don't indicate who the kids belong to, I add a "For Grandchildren Smith" person then add them there until I figure out who they belong to.

  5. Thanks.  Good ideas.  I may have to try something like that when I'm using Legacy for analysis.

  6. I have a master source for each of the DNA testing companies. Then I cite that source for each participant. It is easy to "show list" for everyone on the master source. No need to artificially link them to an unknown person. Just enter them as un-linked individuals and cite the master DNA source. It's kinda like a permanent tag.

  7. Another great idea! Thanks again.I should probably dig a little deeper into DNA as we are using it extensively in addition to our document searching to tie a bunch of Lee descendants together.

  8. I like the source idea also.  I already set one up for 23andMe.  I tested there and found one guy that I know how he fits into my tree - I already had his mother in.  The sources will work better!
