Are you using Legacy with MAC and Parallels and Windows?

Feedback from those that might be using Legacy with MAC and Parallels and Windows. Specific issues?? Or hints. Doing some research/thinking/consideration/contemplation.

Tuesday's Tip - Your research is never complete (and that's a good thing).

Tuesday's Tip - It has been a while since I have done a video tip but I wanted to share with you the good fortune I had recently went I went back to some research I had "completed" and found some new information. I thought it would be a good way to close out 2016 with a video tip! Wishing you and yours a happy and safe holiday season and we will see you back here in 2017! https://youtu.be/yLPU3vP2Tpo

Regarding sources in Legacy 8.

As it’s been said before, genealogy without documentation is mythology. Sourcing with documentation is very clearly the best and only way to truly prove one’s lineage. But I’m struggling to come to terms with how best to do this within Legacy, and I’m hoping someone can help me see the light on this and possibly explain the methodology behind the way that sources are contributed within Legacy. I’m relatively new to the product and began using it with Legacy version 8. I’m struggling to come up with a “best” way to do it, but my questions are not so much the steps involved, but more of the methodology behind it. As I began my project to document my family, my goal early on was to collect all documentation that I could find. Birth/Marriage/Death certificates. Census records. Obituaries. Newspaper articles, etc. This means that I spent a lot of time making copies and scanning them to PDF, taking screenshots, etc. I became a COLLECTOR of information and was hungry to find all th

Tuesday's Tip - how did it get to be December already?

Most of us are now busy (some of you shoveling snow!) and others of us preparing for the holidays. Whether you have a large family or a small family to plan for, the reality is that we tend to get stressed and overwhelmed during the holidays. Oftentimes a walk and a little down time with our genealogy helps calm that stress. The holiday season is a good time to give some thought to our goals for the upcoming year (2017 - yikes!) and it is always a good time to take an hour or two to learn more about the process. With that in mind - check out the Legacy Family Tree Software webinars that are on tap for the remainder of 2016 - only five webinars are left this year. Whether you want to (1) learn a bit more about breaking through brick walls (Sharon Atkins is going to help us hone our detective skills), (2) research and resources in the Midwest (hoping that Nebraska is part of Luana Darby presentation), (3) trace European Ancestors (Julie Goucher has a wealth of information to share

How to cite the Tanguay Collection found on Ancestry.

I am sorry if someone already asked this, but I can't find it in the search. If I want to cite the Tanguay Collection found on Ancestry, how do I do that in Legacy? What do I call it? It is a genealogical database, but that's not one of the options in the Legacy citation program. I know it's not a primary source, but I was considering putting it in my database anyway. Do you all leave it out and just look for the original church records? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know the release date for Legacy 9?

Does anyone know the release date for Legacy 9.0? I bought the book. I am waiting for the new program. Thanks! Judy

I found my Beeken family in the 1920 census, transcribed as Bulan.

Image
I found my Beeken family in the 1920 census, transcribed as Bulan ... and who could blame them considering the handwriting ... This small trick has helped me several times - Search using only the first names; name of head of family, first name of spouse and first name of one of the children. If one child doesn't work try another one.

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom - Getting ready for Thanksgiving.

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom - not a usual entry but how about if we do a couple of things leading up to Thanksgiving in the USA (if you live in another country feel free to follow along!). (1) Spend more time with family and friends and less time with social media and games this holiday weekend. Tune out the noise and connect - have a few quiet moments when you can ask questions or have a relative share a story (and please record it - lots of voice recorders on those smart phones). How many of us would love to be able to hear the voices of our ancestors - grandparents, great grandparents, uncles & aunts? Well future generations will feel the same way - so take a few moments and just do it! (2) Realize we all have triggers - whether that is the economy, the election, religion or "fill in the blank." How about this Thanksgiving season we pull back from those triggers and just enjoy family and friends. Make your Thanksgiving table a "trigger free zone.&

Where do those nicknames come from - ask the question!

To me one important question is "Where did your nickname come from?"

Tuesday's Tip - Take time to gather stories.

Tuesday's Tip - last week I mentioned StoryCorps as a wonderful site for helping each of us gather stories. Well just in time for Thanksgiving (hopefully you are picking up that turkey soon!) comes another great website with some terrific questions to ask family members as you gather round the table. Check out the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage's questions to engage family members. My suggestion - choose some of these questions and type them in blocks - cut out the blocks and fold in half. If you have specific questions from a particular person, place those questions on their plate/place setting. Otherwise fill a bowl and pass it around during dinner. Then sit around with the voice recorder on and ask individuals to read the question and tell their story. You will have not only the story but their voice to add to your family history. Definitely add their story to your Legacy Family Tree family files. Take a look at the questions - which ones do y

Tuesday's Tip - I love StoryCorps - here's why.

Tuesday's Tip - One of my favorite groups as those of you who have been in our LVUG Community know is StoryCorps - an amazing organization that gathers and preserves stories. Their website it wonderful and provides lots of tips and resources for interviewing family members and friends. As genealogists and family historians we know that names and dates are a start but it is the story of a person's life that is the key to making our family history come alive. Why not take some time to root around at the StoryCorps website and learn more about the Great Thanksgiving Day of Listening. Make some plans to engage with your family and learn one or more fascinating stories that will add to your family history. And don't forget that Legacy has some great resources in this area as well - take advantage of the interview questions. You can start out with the standard questions, make them your own, add or subtract as appropriate, and be ready for your own Great Thanksgiving Day

Tuesday's Tip - It's Election Day.

Tuesday's Tip - Today is a big day - in all 50 States and the District of Columbia, registered voters are going to the polls or dropping off their ballots (shout out to Washington and Oregon). We live in a country that has a presidential election every four years and we have a peaceful transition of power. Our collective ancestors drafted the provisions, many of our ancestors fought and died for our rights, many others have served our country in the military, in local, statewide and national office. Please take the time to vote - make your voice heard. And then please take a few moments to note that you voted in your Legacy program and perhaps learn a bit more about your ancestors' political lives - whether and where they were registered, if they ever held elective office, perhaps how you are related to any of our previous presidents, vice presidents, governors, senators or representatives. The right to vote has changed and expanded over the decades - adding those with

Family History Month - The National Archives Virtual Genealogy Fair.

Wondering how to close out Family History Month - well today and tomorrow The National Archives is hosting a Virtual Genealogy Fair. Both days are chock full of presentations and you can attend from the comfort of your own home. What's in store and why watch? (1) handouts can be downloaded from the website (I love handouts - helps me remember the highlights and provides those links we want) (2) the presentations are available on YouTube - so watch what you want when you want (we all have busy days so perhaps you can catch a few live and watch the remainder recorded) (3) the changes we see on a monthly and yearly basis make learning how to do our research in the nation's attic helpful. Whether you research online, in Washington, D.C., or at any of the regional archives' facilities - make it easier on yourself by learning what's available, how to get to it, and what to do with once you have it! (4) you can share your knowledge with others - I will be wat

Tuesday's Tip - October is Family History Month in the USA.

Tuesday's Tip - October is Family History Month in the USA and there are so many activities you can join in on to celebrate the month. In previous years I have provided a tip a day (they are all here in our Community - just select Tuesday's Tip in the Filter to view them for the first time or as a reminder). This month I am focusing on living family as my brother is in the midst of chemo and has had a few setbacks or bumps in the road requiring my time and attention (we both live in the same area and our extended family live farther away). Things should be back on track soon, but in the meantime, might I suggest that LVUG community members give some thought to the upcoming #FindAGrave Community Days scheduled for October 7-9. (1) You can sign up at FindAGrave to take photographs and add memorials OR transcribe photographs of tombstones that are in the queue. (2) You can simply go to the nearest cemetery and take photographs to add to FindAGrave's ever-increasin

Question about sourcing relationships.

I have a question about sourcing relationships, more specifically, the spouse relationship. It is easy to add a source to the child-parent relationship, but the only place I have found to source the spouse relationship is in the wedding section. But can I add a source if the document does not give any information about the wedding, just that X was the spouse of Y? Right now, I manage these source citations outside of Legacy, in Evernote, but I would like to simplify my process and put it in Legacy. How do you all do that in Legacy?

Getting all children to show up in family reports - help.

Help How do I get the children from all spouses to show when i print a family report.I have searched help and I just can't seem to find the way.

I have a question about creating a Descendant report.

I was able to create the report as both a .PDF and a .RTF file. I noticed that the PDF created created the Table of Contents and generated an index. However, on the RTF file Index page says: [ Note: Using your word processor, generate an Index here. ] [ All names have been marked as index entries in this document. ] [ Erase these three lines. ] The TOC page has a similar message. Do the messages mean I have to create my own in the RTF file? Thanks.

Hey - why not play Saturday Night Genealogy Fun with Randy Seaver.

Hey - why not play Saturday Night Genealogy Fun with Randy Seaver and the rest of us. You get to use your Legacy Family Tree family file and find out about surnames. Here is my entry - join the fun. https://keoughcorner.blogspot.com/

Voting is open for Genealogy Rockstars.

Voting is open for Genealogy Rockstars - John Reid of Anglo-Celtic Connections runs this poll each year. This year he has made a few changes - now you can only vote once (wow that makes sense!) and hopefully the votes will be from genealogists and family historians. It helps if genealogists look over the list and vote for those who they think educate, entertain and inform us throughout the year. Whether that is in webinars, seminars, conferences or perhaps with blog posts or websites. See the list and click on Vote Here link at the site. Voting is only open for one week - so check it out soon. Cheers http://anglo-celtic-connections.blogspot.ca/2016/09/rockstar-genealogists-2016-voting-now.html

Tuesday's Tip - Apologies, sometimes life gets in the way.

Tuesday's Tip - Apologies - after I plugged my upcoming webinar presentation on SCGS, I had to cancel. The good news is that it will be rescheduled. The bad news is the reason. As sometimes happens a member of our family takes ill. When that happens real life means family comes first. One of my siblings got a diagnosis that means we have some chemo appointments on the horizon, together with additional treatment. So my brother and I will spend some quality time at the local Veterans Administration Hospital (they have been wonderful throughout the wonder what's wrong, testing and explanation of how to attack this phases). Silver lining - spending more time with brother and asking lots of questions to update his branch of the tree. Thanks for understanding, and now that we have the schedule for treatments set, I will be back on track. My tip for today is take care of yourself and get your checkups so you can be doing genealogy and entering data in your Legacy software

Tuesday's Tip - I am a big fan of the Legacy Family Tree Webinar Series.

Tuesday's Tip - Whether you attend live, watch the recording during the "free" week, or are a member and watch whenever the mood strikes you - it's all good. Last week the webinar on Homestead Records & Following the Witnesses was excellent! I consider a webinar worth my investment of time if (1) it addresses a topic I want or need to learn more about, (2) the presenter takes the time to present in an interesting and informative way, and (3) if there are one or two take aways. (1) How many of us have ancestors who made use of the Homestead Act? I know that my James Murphy not only acquired land through the Homestead Act but also by purchasing land made available by the relinquishment of the War of 1812 warrants (another good webinar!). The homestead remains in the family today AND I found several additional extended family members who also acquired land through the Homestead Act. (2) Although I have spent lots of time researching on my own, the presen

Entering Olympic honors in Legacy - what a great event!

A recently found cousin is an Olympic athlete (She just took home Bronze on Friday).  I want to record her medals and competitions in my Legacy program.  Which would be more appropriate for the event fact: "Honors", "Occupation", or create one specific to each event (such as 2016 Rio Olympic Games or 1996 World Cup?

Whatever your plans for the evening - you might want to change them.

Whatever your plans for the evening - you might want to change them. May I suggest that you watch PBS' American Experience tonight - "The Boys of '36" - a documentary inspired by Daniel James Brown excellent book "The Boys in the Boat." I saw an advance screening of the show and it is something you don't want to miss. It combines family history (the stories of the individual young men, the coaches and the amazing British boat designer), social history (Seattle in the 1930s, university life, crew), national and international history (American politics, the 1936 Berlin Olympics, racial and economic realities in the 1930s), and one of the best, most up-lifting stories of overcoming personal difficulties and achieving goals. The book and documentary's message is that small things make a difference, people can overcome tremendous odds, and we are a community of dreamers and doers. No doubt there are these same stories in your own family - individ

Today is Aunts/Uncles Day - who knew?

Today is Aunts/Uncles Day - who knew? Well apparently Ancestry.com knew and they are asking the question "which aunt or uncle would you like to meet?" I would add "and why?" So for a little fun, open your Legacy family tree file and take a look around. Which aunt or uncle would you like to meet? For my part, I'm choosing my 2x great uncle Andrew Keough (1832-1904) married to Mary Driscoll (1830-1896). Andrew was one of Andrew Keough and Catherine Aylward's ten children. He should have lots of information for me on his parents (please where is Catherine from and who are her people), his siblings and their families, and his own family (he and Mary had 9 children). He could tell me what life was like in Newfoundland (specifically Plate Cove East). I could fill in lots more blanks with what he could tell me, take my family back another generation (if he knows who his parents' parents were) and a few brick walls would come tumbling down. How

How to enter events in Legacy - a question.

I'm sure someone has addressed these questions before but I can't seem to find anything on them.  I am having a problem deciding how to enter events. I have done a lot of research using Polk Directories.  My father's family lived in one city for most of their lives and many at the same address for years.  If I want to enter just one line for the Polk Directory for someone with the same address for twenty years, should I just enter 1920 -1940?  But, if you had a tax or voter event that fell within that time bracket, the placement would be off. The other question is regarding occupation.  I would like to record that in the event but can't seem to find a proper place for it.  Right now occupations are with the addresses and employers in the Desc/Place/Notes.  So my Master Location list looks a little odd.  I guess there is no harm in that.  John Smith (Mary), carpenter, Brown Lumber, 100 West Main, Topeka, Kansas  If anyone has any suggestions, I would welcome them.

Have you checked to make sure your Legacy is up-to-date? Here's how.

Image
Just a real quick "how do I do that" - have you checked to make sure your Legacy is up-to-date? It is a simple matter of checking on the Home Page View in Legacy (there on the right-hand column). If you want to update, simply click on the link and the update should load. Some use an earlier version of Legacy (I know many who did not upgrade to version 8 from version 7). Notice the difference in terms - upgrade is for versions (5, 6, 7 & 8) and update is for minor changes, or fixing things in a version (8.0.0.559 - the most recent update). Updates are always those numbers after the decimal point.

I am still in the marriage mood for Tuesday's Tips.

Image
I am still in the marriage mood for Tuesday's Tips. I was over on Facebook (yes I go there - some great genealogy focused groups and information!) and the subject of annulments and how people enter them in Legacy came up. We don't have many in my family, but we do have a few - both civil and religious. And it got me thinking that we have the ability in Legacy to show an annulment (whether civil or religious) as "status" in our marriage events/facts. Do you include status in your marriage entries? Do you include other items besides the date and place of the marriage in your marriage entries? Attached are 4 quick images that show you where to find this entry, and how to add a new status to your master list for marriages.

How many backups to keep?

I'm not sure where to post this question so here goes.  I go in and clean up my backup files periodically because I backup every time I close Legacy.  So, I accumulate a lot of backups.  Those are zipped files.  I realized that I had not done that to my recently added external hard drive.  I took a look at the backup files on the external drive this morning.  I have the regular zipped files that are on my PC.  But, I also have files with extensions: SC, TC, Rc3, PPL, and RGD.  When I open one of the zipped files, I can see those same file extensions.  So, I am assuming that my external hard drive is saving the zipped file but also saving the individual files.  My question is can I confidently delete those individual files as long as I save the zipped (compressed) files?  I have been saving one zipped file for each month just for safety's sake.  I hope I posted this to the write group.

We had a wedding in the family last weekend.

We had a wedding in the family last weekend. It was a big, noisy, wonderful Italian/Irish/Slovenian event - complete with pre-functions (4 showers, as well as bachelor and bachelorette parties), the rehearsal (a bit like herding cats) and rehearsal dinner (about 80 attended that - neither side has small families), the nuptial wedding mass, the reception, the day after family picnic, and the small (only 40 attended) opening wedding presents get together with the bride and groom (which closed out the weekend). That evening they took off for their honeymoon to be followed up with 2 more receptions, on the East Coast and in the Maritimes. My first thought was I need to use my smartphone to take lots of photos and some video (the bride's parents' toasts were so amazing and so heartfelt). I wanted to capture images of so many things from the event - the family and friends who attended, the church, the reception, the toasts, the first dance, the new family members (all of whom w

Fixing family entries - wrong mother.

I hope someone can help me. When I entered a certain leg of my wife's family, One guy had two wives, but all their thirteen children seemed to have one mother. Recently I discovered more information, and a new source and dates now seem to suggest that all the kids were from the other wife. Is there and easy way for me to "give them to the other mother"?

Hello - new to LVUG community.

Hello. I am new to your group and only found it via you tube. I am enjoying the video's and tips. I am also new to Legacy and my goal is to correctly cite my sources. My research is primarily focused in Ireland, New York state and some in Canada,

I just imported my database into Legacy 8 Deluxe from PAF - some questions.

I just imported my database into Legacy 8 Deluxe from PAF. Years ago I traded databases with a very distant cousin and merged hers into mine. Legacy has flagged many errors in the data she provided. I would like to delete all the descendants she provided below where our lines meet. That goes back to the early 1800s. I'm really only interested in my family line and not very very distant cousins. Anyone have a suggest on a easy way to delete them?

I just want to say thank you to the LVUG community.

I just want to say thank you. The LVUG Community is amazing. I'm a newbie on Legacy and twice I've watched the Hangout sessions on YouTube and you guys addressed issues I was struggling with. The first one was on how to cite sources. GREAT stuff. You got me past that hurdle. The second video I watched last night when I couldn't sleep. You talked about the Add-ins available. I really wanted to know more about GenSmarts. I probably won't get it just yet, but at least I've seen it in action and I know it's out there. So, thanks again.

This year I have been taking a certificate course in genealogy andsocial history.

Image
This year I have been taking a certificate course in genealogy and social history. It has been an adventure and also lots of work. As the year came to a close and final projects were turned in and oral presentations were given, I looked back on what I learned. My biggest takeaway - we don't know as much as we think we do with our genealogy. Many of us have done genealogy for years and it really took looking at my family group sheets, pedigree charts, and reports with "new eyes" to find answers to questions I should have been asking long before this course. Focusing on one family for a limited period of time and filling in gaps both with records and historical information was a continual process of finding one answer and having three more questions pop up. What was a huge help was being able to print out charts, group sheets, and reports and in this my Legacy software has been my saving grace. Of course it is a great piece of software (otherwise we would not be

Using the source clipboard in Legacy 7.

As long as we are discussing sources-- I am aware of and use the source clipboard a lot and have 7 or my saved slots filled with my favorite and most often used sources. Love it. Also have the source clipboard setting 7.5 set to allow one source on the source clipboard. But i am curious about the other option in 7.5 setting "Allow up to 5 sources". I do know that when you click on the single bar, and you have a source in each one of the tabs, all 5 will be assigned to that particular event. Why would a person want to do that - in what situation? I guess I need an explanation as the value of this option. I think I would quickly have a very big mess.

How to make a global correction to a source detail in Legacy - help.

Does anyone know how to make a Global correction to a SOURCE DETAIL  to a source used  by more than one person?  If  I make a correction  or an addition to the the SOURCE DETAIL, it would be so nice to be able to have this correction made to every person using that particular SOURCE DETAIL.  Without having to manually correct each source detail.  I know I can copy the source in the SOURCE LIST SCREEN and paste into the event where the previous incomplete Source Detail was recorded and then delete the previous source.

Continue to learn with genealogy conferences.

I think one of the best things we can do for ourselves is continue to learn - whether that is learning more about genealogy or learning more about Legacy. Last weekend I had the opportunity to present on "Avoiding Shiny Penny Syndrome" at the #SCGSJ2016 (Southern California Genealogy Society's 2016 Jamboree). I originally gave a 5 minute tip about Shiny Penny Syndrome 4 years ago during a Legacy Idol "contest" that Geoff Rasmussen ran as part of a Legacy presentation. I built on that idea and my presentation includes lots of references to Legacy Family Tree Software because it is my software of choice. It was live-streamed and recorded and will be available until July 5th. Geoff and the Legacy/Millennia team were in the Exhibit Hall helping current and future users with their questions. All in all, it was a terrific experience for the 1,400 genealogists who attended. Now today's Tuesday's Tip is to take a look at the 14 free to view recordings b

Someone had the idea to list all source detail under Master Source comments.

Image
Someone had the idea to list all Source Detail under Master Source/Text/Comments. And it scrolls on and on and on and on. Can hardly blame them. The wording Text/Comments does kind of suggest this is where to put it.

How do I copy a source detail that I already input previously?

For example, several weeks ago I input some information I obtained on my grandfather and forgot to add an event into his father's file because it was new information.   I don't want to re-input all the source detail information and I'm figuring there must be a way I can pull up this previously used source detail information I forgot to enter.

Don't all run to the same side of the airplane at once.

I've changed my links in the LVUG from JLog to Dropbox and that may confuse some people. After nearly ten years, my website is now closed. For anyone still interested, the entire content has been archived in Dropbox as MHT pages and linked from https://jlbeeken.blogspot.com . MHT is simply a form of HTML but you may have to set your browser to open them by default. Otherwise they'll look like a stream of goobledygook. It's a simple process. Download a page to your computer. Right-click and click Open With ... then choose Chrome. This should set it for all time. For Firefox you'll have to install the unMHT plugin first. Dropbox will throw up a 'sign up' box as an obstacle for you but you do not need a Dropbox account to download a page. Although JLog is presently re-directing traffic, the day will come when the old links are going to 1) hit a wall of ads or 2) land on the site of someone else who's bought the domain when my site comes down.

Tuesday's Tip - Teacher Appreciation Day.

Tuesday's Tip - Good morning to all our LVUG Community members. Today is Teacher Appreciation Day. Do you have educators in your family tree? Have you included an event/fact for those educators and shared a bit of their story in your Legacy family file. Some things to include - (1) when and where did they teach? (2) what was the name of the school and what grade(s) did they teach? (3) what was their background - self-taught, any teaching credentials? (4) how many years did they educate? (5) were any of your family members responsible for teaching in particular places - military installations, native reservations, private or public schools? (6) did any of your ancestors help educate in the Great Plains and Prairie states in the 19th century (think Little House on the Prairie - but the reality was much, much more)? (7) do you have any current family members who teach? You might ask them how they think the profession has changed since they have been involved. Today - give so

Export to USB thumb-drive?

These days new computers tend not to have CD drives so I am looking for a way to export my Legacy file to a USB stick. Ideally, it would be self-booting ie not requiring installation, perhaps by using a cut-down version of Legacy that operated as a viewer only? If that is wishful thinking, is there a way to put together a self-booting ged viewer, although then my media files would not be included I guess? What I want to end up with is to be able to distribute USB drives to family members who are interested in viewing the data without needing to operate on it in any way. Any suggestions on how I could achieve this would be most welcome. Oh, and greetings to all in the group from a first-timer :-)

This is what I get when I search for MRINs (User IDs) between 5000 and 5999.

Image
This is what I get when I search for MRINs (User IDs) between 5000 and 5999. There's only one (5562) that is an accurate result, but if I change the number it swaps with another one. And if I change that one it swaps back again and so on in an endless loop. Obviously, everything else is irrelevant to my query. Is it just me, or would someone else like to try a similar search?

Tuesday's Tip - Spring Cleanning.

Tuesday's Tip - I don't know about the rest of you, but when I get through with my taxes (yes I am a procrastinator) then it seems like a good time for spring cleaning. Since I am sorting, filing and such I tend to carry it over to my "genealogy" life as well. I have five suggestions - and be sure to share with our LVUG community any that you focus on in April. (1) I go through my emails and make a point to unsubscribe to anything that no longer read or use - I do this in conjunction with my archiving of my emails and this weekend I unsubscribed to a dozen different sites that I simply don't have the time or the interest - give that a go and make your email life easier. (2) I go through my master location list in Legacy and clean up the locations - sometimes I get things wrong - check your list AND check your short (or abbreviation) list - I make sure my counties and countries in the short form as 2 and 3 letter codes. (3) I go through my surname lis

Variant spellings of surnames - what to do?

It's probably been addressed before - most likely several times, but due to my short memory recall, here's my question anyway.  There are some twenty-odd spellings / variations of my family surname - Gallagher.  In most situations, I found the spelling the result of an illiterate, political appointed census enumerator, or some other similar situation...  how is the best way to enter that person into Legacy?  I realize that we should capture the evidence as we find it, but that can certainly make future evaluations somewhat problematic - e.g., list all the "Gallaghers" - what about the Galligers, the Gallahers, etc.?  I have been correcting the surname and entering the recorded spelling as an "AKA."  What is the consensus of this highly-learned group?  Thanks for your thoughts.

What's the point of Legacy Search having a time limit?

What's the point of Legacy Search having a time limit to it? Sometimes I pause, and only for a few seconds, and the search starts again at the top of the search list.

The option to print some reports/lists in a csv in Legacy.

As some of you know, Legacy provides us an option to print some reports/lists in a csv (comma separated value) format. One csv format is Microsoft Excel and I often put search results in an Excel worksheet so I can manipulate it and work with it outside of my Legacy family file. I attended RootsTech back in February and did a computer lab presentation on using Excel with genealogy. I recorded the presentation (15 examples on working in Excel) and thought some of our LVUG Community members who are new to Excel might find the videos helpful (I did each example separately - shorter and focused). They are over at my YouTube Channel - TessaWatch - and I am including the link to the Playlist for the Fun with Excel videos. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnO_AfsN2gON21xxk5DBBHjhrYSAGoD5H

Tuesday's Tip - Time for a little spring cleanning.

Tuesday's Tip - I use Google Chrome for my browser and today instead of a Google Doodle , there was a note that said it was time for Spring Cleaning. Google also had a link to 10 online safety tips. A tip of the hat to Google for providing two great ideas - spring cleaning and online safety (be sure to check out their tips). Now let's take that a step further and do a bit of spring cleaning in our Legacy family files. If you haven't done it in a while - now is a great time to go through file maintenance as well master lists (surnames and locations - to name two) that I regularly clean up. While you are at it, make sure you have updated Legacy (the current version is 8.0.0.544) and you can do that from the Legacy Home View (the one right before your Family View). Why not do a bit of spring cleaning and start the month of April off with your Legacy family file all spruced up.

Working with notes and reports in Legacy - can we move things around?

Folks here solved my last question, so I'm hoping there is a simple solution here, too (perhaps buried deep in options)... (My question is at the end, if all my explanation is too long and unnecessary) With my previous software (Generations), I put much of my collected information on an individual in the "Notes" field.  In Legacy, I'm working my way through thousands of people in my database to  catalog Events properly.  BUT I still have information that better fits Notes, such as stories and things that don't fit into an event item and really fill in the holes.  In Generations, the Notes information would come after the vital statistics in a report.  In Legacy, the Notes and Research information comes first in the reports I've generated - that is weird to me because it results in a story about someone before the basic chronology of the person is given.  So my question: Is there a way to tell Legacy to put Notes information AFTER the chronological l

Using drag and drop with addresses.

I've been hoping forever to be able to use drag&drop in the individual Address windows. It doesn't work there (v.7) but it does work in other places, like Notes and Source Detail. For your added comfort and convenience.

Master location list and what to call the United States before it was united.

Here's an idiot question: What do you call the United States before it was called the United States in your Master Location List?

Tuesday's Tip - Irish records and source citations.

Tuesday's Tip - It's March and with the start of a new month we have the start of all celebrations for Ireland's patron saint - St. Patrick. (Best parades and goings on I have attended - Chicago, New York, Dublin & Seattle). In case you didn't notice #FindmyPast has done all genealogists searching for their Irish roots a huge service - records that were made available originally by the National Library of Ireland late in 2014 have now been fully digitized and indexed (many researchers don't know the county or parish their family members came from so this is a huge help - if you search by surname). So if you have Irish roots - be sure to check out FindMyPast this week (Mar 1 - Mar 8) and be sure to read this article at IrishCentral to learn more about this amazing record collection. For my part - I am looking for Keoughs, Murphys, Kielys, Butlers, Driscolls and Dooleys. We come from one of the smallest counties (Carlow) and two of the largest counties (

Legacy can produce web pages - how do I do that?

You may or may not know that Legacy can produce web pages so you can put your family tree onto the internet. It’s relatively simple, click the Internet icon on “My Toolbar” & select “Create web pages…”. You get a dialog much like one for any report. Fill that out to your satisfaction and click “Create Web Pages” and your done. It does a reasonably good job, you can get away without having to deal with HTML programming. (Although I couldn’t resist learning some of it.) Now the reason for the post and my question. I cannot figure out where the various font types and sizes are controlled from. There doesn’t seem to be anything in the Web Page Creation dialog so I am thinking the fonts are controlled from some of the report settings. However no matter what changes I made in the report fonts they do not replicate in the web pages. Your thoughts and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Tagging by surname and adding spouses - how?

I have tagged all the individuals with the surname Smith in my database. Now I want to tag all the spouses for those individuals. How do I do that?

Using Legacy with my DNA test results - how?

' evening all.  I am working with a cousin to try to figure out how to log her Ancestry.com DNA test into my Legacy 8 program, but have hit a roadblock that I hope someone can help me with ... The first thing it asks is what kind of test it was.  Well, we don't know.  We have searched the Ancestry site and have not been able to determine what kind of test it is (they only have 1 test now but they fail to say the name of it).  Does anyone out there know what the current DNA test is?  Or which of the 7 Ancestry test options in Legacy I should/could use to record the results of the current Ancestry DNA test? Thanks, Wade

Issues with my Legacy database - help.

I have not posted before but I am in serious trouble. I use Legacy and love it but I am in trouble and cannot seem to obtain a reply from Legacy. I was making some changes in my Master event definition list to make the descriptions more consistent. But now I find I have errors and the error message appears when I try to export a Gedcom "event definition was not found". Upon closer examination I have found the Birth Master list entries has vanished and 1871 English census is the same. I have resorted to backups but this error seems to have been there a while and I will need to add over 100 family members to get back to where I last have a clean file, Sigh. Can anyone make any helpful suggestions or should I just start rebuilding.

Why and when to use split screens?

I was wondering if when we  use the split screen is that for only Legacy family lines? I would like to use that when I am entering other types of records  ie. census, marriage, birth, death. etc. Could I scan the record and look at it with this split screen while I enter the information in?

A rather crazy busy January/February.

I don't know about you but I had a rather crazy busy January/February. Another group I belong to (the Guild of One-Name Studies) was on board for exhibiting at RootsTech (in Salt Lake City early in February). One of the volunteers who planned to not only work the booth but also provide some of our booth items ended up canceling her trip. Much of the planning, preparation, setup, "manning," and take-down fell to yours truly (with huge assists from a handful of dedicated Guild members/volunteers). I learned lots about exhibits at genealogy events in a short amount of time! We were thrown a final curve ball when another volunteer had a medical issue come up the day of her flight and was also unable to attend and help out with the booth. Surprisingly enough, everything turned out fine and we ended up having a great time. Lessons learned and these lessons also apply with our genealogy:: (1) something will happen (it always does) and you need to "go with the

Searching for a name within a source citation.

I have found the need to search for a name that is within a source citation. He is the preacher who married two different couples in my tree.  The name is pretty unusual.  Is there a way to search for a name within the source citations?  Thanks for your advice!

Using the Snipping Tool with Legacy - issues.

I have installed Windows 10 and have been using the Snipping Tool often.  My wish is that I could copy that image into the notes for an individual.  I have tried saving the image or clipping as pdf and jpg and it will not stick.  It is there visually but is gone once I save the note.  You can insert that image into Word and no problem.  I know many of you will say I should save that as a media item and link it to the individual but I really don't want to do that.  At this point, if it is an obit, I have to word process it into notes.   If you are wondering what my thought process is on this (and I often wonder about my thought process myself), I have used notes for everything on anyone - census, marriage, newspaper articles, etc.  I am doing that so when I want to write a bio on that person I will have the structure and the details of that bio in front of me.  Has anyone tried saving an image into notes and been successful?  Has anyone else ever requested being able to do this

Something glitchy with my Legacy - help.

I did something wrong - got error menu - no code - "event definition not found".  Now I cannot delete it NOR am I able to do anything whatsoever with it or anything to do with legacy program.

Uploading my Legacy Gedcom to Ancestry - issues.

I recently uploaded my Legacy data to an Ancestry tree, just to see what works, what doesn't, etc. I'm looking for ways to share all my hard work. What didn't work was all my notes - general, research, event notes, etc. They do not appear with any of the records displayed in the Ancestry tree. I used the Ancestry upload feature within Legacy. I note that when it creates the file, there are no "customize" options that occur with normal Gedcom exports, but the resulting file was a normal Gedcom and all the Note codes with Note texts were there. They just do not get picked up by Ancestry when it translates the data. Has anyone figured a workaround? (This is probably all explained somewhere important - but I haven't come across it yet. :) I realize Ancestry would rather you build your tree on their site, but I prefer Legacy...)

Cannot add a comment to your last post for some reason.

Bob Thompson: Cannot add a comment to your last post for some reason. Reinstalling Legacy should help. For more details go to the Legacy website. Right click on Help Center and select Troubleshooting help, then select Error Messages and Problems. You'll find Error 530 down the list. Hope that helps.

Backup Error 530 - what gives?

Hello world, When attempting to backup Legacy, something I have done almost daily since December, I got the following error and the backup failed Your suggestions please?

Copying multiple events between people in Legacy.

Hi All, Is there any way to copy multiple events between people in your tree. I was specifically thinking of census entries which I record as Occupation and Residence events. Thanks Keith

How to print a report of birth, baptism and death notes - help.

Is it possible to print a "report" of all birth, christening, death notes?

Hangout schedule?

Are the Legacy Virtual User Group hangouts still taking place on the 3rd Thursday?

Okay - monitoring who joins our LVUG community.

Okay - for the second (and hopefully last time) we have had those interesting folks join our LVUG Community. Thanks to the eagle eye of Monique Riley - they were seen and banned. Thankfully Google has added a feature that allows us to remain a Public Community but change our membership policy from open joining (everyone welcome) to ask to join (this gives us a bit more admin work but makes sure those pesky porn folks don't get through the gate in future). As my gran would say - you would think they would have something better to do with their time. We should see this change take place immediately - thanks again to my great co-moderators for catching this! And now that I have got all the planning and prep down for RootsTech, we will be back to our regular schedule of Tuesday's Tips. In the meantime, do remember to check out Legacy's tips that get published at their website and attend the Wednesday Webinar if the topic is something that you can put to use with your own g

Master locations with New York - how to enter the locations?

I just discovered that the boroughs of New York are actually the counties. Do other people list the location as Queens, New York, New York as we tend to think of the boroughs being a section of the city, or New York, Queens, New York since each borough is technically the county for that part of the city?

Using snipping tool - how to add snips into Legacy notes?

I've been using the Windows clipping tool a lot and tried to paste a clipping into the general notes section with no success.  Is it possible to do this?  I changed the clipping into a pdf image and that still didn't work.  Thanks for any advice!

Always monitoring new members to our LVUG community.

Some of you might be wondering why our LVUG Community membership numbers jumped around overnight. Thanks to Monique Riley who noticed that we had a number of "members" with no names, blue heads, and/or rather inappropriate names and interests. I guess the beginning of the year brings out those odd folks. Thankfully due to some quick culling work - they have been banned. Heads up to all members (new and old). We have an open community because when we originally started I wanted people to feel free to join. We really haven't had many problems with this open system. But every once in a while we have to go through the membership list and determine if there is no name or an odd name whether that person is interested in genealogy, a real person, someone trying to sell something, or (our favorite) a porn site (jeez!). It helps if you have an avatar and/or if you have some mutual genealogy friends or are in mutual genealogy communities, and/or if you have posted something ge

Adding an image but can't see it in its entirety.

I am having a problem. I am trying to add a copy of WWII Draft Card to one of my ancestors. When I put it under Research, you cannot see all of the card. So I put in in the media under picture the 1st time, but came up in the picture frame next to his name. I don't want this information to show in that frame. I tried saving it as a document instead of a picture, but the same thing happens. Where can I save this document, that I can see the entire document?

New to Legacy from Family Tree Maker - some questions.

This is my first time to post to anything - apologies if I do something wrong. I'm new to Legacy - about 2 months - after using Family Tree Maker for about 6 months - left it just before they announced they were discontinuing it! I was used to the Family Tree Maker method of have both a master source and a master source citation (corresponds to "details" in Legacy). So if I realized I had forgotten to source some detail, I could just go back to the specific citation and apply it to the correct field. With Legacy, when I find myself in that situation, I have to totally recreate the detail before I can cite something properly that I missed the first time.   My question is: is there any way to reload a specific set of detail source information onto the clipboard from an existing, already assigned source detail.  In other words - I can see the information in the Assigned Sources box, and I can edit it if I want, but I can't "grab" it so that I can assig

I am using the multiple source function for the source clipboard.

I can't seem to figure out how to choose the source from the clipboard that I want to add to an individual or event. Are there specific instructions for that?

Tuesday's Tip - Putting Legacy on a new computer.

Tuesday's Tip - We are 5 days into the New Year and like many people, Santa brought me a new notebook ( I will keep believing as long as I get to enjoy the Christmas spirit, the Christmas spirits, and lovely gifts that come my way !). I read up on how to put Legacy on my new notebook (thanks Millennia for making that process so easy). I also had saved my settings when I backed up my Legacy family files - so I knew I could mirror my 2015 look and preferences. But in the spirit of the New Year I decided to backup (on my soon to be retired notebook) and then restore Legacy (on my squeaky clean and new notebook) and then run through customization (our preferences) - found at the Options tab. It took about 10 minutes to run through everything and now my family files have a new look (but most of the same preferences). And I am now saving my Legacy family data files in OneDrive - so no matter where or when I work with my Legacy files, no worries about "versions." O

Trying to edit a Master Source.

I edited the bibliography portion, however, the Subsequent Citation remains the same.  The source is the WV vital records website. When I originally set up the master source I categorized it as death records.  I should have used Vital Records because now I have a marriage record. Is there any way to do this without messing up the records I have already entered?  Thanks so much for any help.

Beginning to do research on my German immigrant family.

I'm just beginning to do research on my German immigrant family. I have located the place of birth for my great-grandmother, but I'm not sure how to enter the locations into Legacy. I've been using the 4-place naming convention for US place names: city, county, state, country, but it appears that Germany may have 6 place names. What is the typical naming convention for German place names? Her place of birth was listed as Schornweisach, Baiern, Germany. On a modern map I've located it in: Schornweisach, Uehifeld, Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, Mittelfranken, Bayern, Deutschland.  I'm sure that is not the location for 1861 when she was born.

Happy New Year everyone.

I have just discovered that Legacy can compile my database into html ready to put up onto the web. Sweet! But the result does not look quite the way I would like. So with a bit of diligent study via Google into the vagaries of html coding a managed to get what I was wanting. In a nutshell I wanted to place a “For more information click HERE” on various people’s pages that would provide a link to more detailed discussions rather than clogging up the page with reams of data. So I edited the appropriate html file directly. But then I found some missing information and entered it into Legacy. Then I re-ran the html compiler and shock, horror ALL of my careful modifications were wiped out. So here is the question. How can I incorporate additional html code so that it make changes as above but not be wiped out by a data update and re-compile?
