Love the new look of Legacy News!

Love the new look of Legacy News! http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/ http://news.legacyfamilytree.com

I just used Search Internet to search FindAGrave.

I just used Search Internet to search Findagrave for my great grandmother.  Nice tool but it doesn't include married female's married name, only maiden so is almost guaranteed to fail. Is there a way to get Legacy to use FAG's 'include maiden name' checkbox?

Tuesday's Tip - Playing with t master event list.

Looking for people in specific places and they are in your mailing, event or repository address lists? Perhaps you are looking for everyone in a particular cemetery or church or from your entries with FindAGrave? Let's take a look at the Master Event List and play around with the options. Ron Heroux (and many of the rest of us) - this one is for you ( but it is not really "all about addresses" ). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZrge2EYPw0

How do I find all ancestors buried in the same cemetery?

How do I find all ancestors buried in the same cemetery?  I tried the Search feature, but while notes-burial and burial place are searchable, cemeteries are put in address-burial field, and this is not one of the available fields for searching.

Working with your source details in SourceWriter.

Image
I would first decide how you want your sources grouped together in your master source list.  For example I use only one Census source for each census; all 1880 Census regardless of where they are from get the same master source.  I spent a lot of time cleaning up sources and grouping them together so they were easier to find.  The source list name can be anything you want it to be; anything that will make easy and quick to find the source you are looking for.   +Mary Charlotte Hall

Is there a hangout today?

Is there a hangout today?  I seem to recall hearing in a webinar or seeing a post somewhere that there was a hangout sometime today.  How would I join?

Well that Tuesday passed me by!

We had a plumbing snafu and of course we are doing all those last minute (actually last few weeks and weekend) things before a big family wedding and reunion - why did we think this would be a good idea to combine the two? Anyway - thanks to all the great moderators and members here who are jumping in answering questions and lending a hand - it is what we are all about here at the LVUG Community. And today is Webinar Wednesday so why not check out the Legacy Webinar. Have a great Memorial Day weekend - remember the reason for Memorial Day is not another shopping day but rather we honor all those who served and died for our country . I will be visiting two of of town cemeteries. What are your plans?

Changing the gender to unknown in Legacy - how?

Is there a way to change a child's gender to 'unknown' please?  I would prefer to be able to change it instead of deleting & re entering as I have sources & media attached.  Thank you.

Is there a way to have more than 1 repository for a source?

I have a few books in my personal library that I first used in a public library, plus, of course, numerous BMD certs whose original repositories are in some state bureau but which I also want to note that I have copies of in my personal papers. TIA.

When to use JPG or PDF format with media.

I use both the JPG and PDF format.  JPGs I use for my pictures but for other documents like scanning birth records I use PDF format.  I know how to attached them but it appears from what I'm reading in the help section under media that when publishing a book or scrapbook that PDF documents are not input into these features.  Am I incorrect?  I've tried everything I can think of but none of my PDF files show when I publish a book.  I have this feeling what I read in the help file is correct i.e., PDF files will not show up when using the publish book feature, descendant charts, ancestor charts, scrapbooks, etc.

New to LVUG community.

Hi there my name is Sarah Ashmore and I have recently discovered the LVUG Community. I live in Auckland New Zealand. I've used Legacy for about a year now and am interested in the surnames Ashmore, Backhurst and Pocklington. Look forward to learning and sharing with you.

Source template ID number.

Is there an option to turn on the source template ID on permanently when viewing the Master Source List? I have been tidying up master sources where, sadly, I have used different templates for sources I know want to combine. (Using Tessa's naming system has highlighted this). When I try to combine sources which have different templates a pop up box asks if I want to show template ID's. I found this useful during my housekeeping but the disappear when I close the list. Is there a way to leave these displayed permanent? Hope this is clear enough. Thanks

Using SourceWriter - check the templates.

Image
Mitch Parker Are you referring to having the Source Writer choose the correct template for a census by answering the questions with the drop down menus? There are several templates because the citations are written different depending on the medium (microfilm or online images).  Does this screenshot help?

Master sources for same year censuses - a question.

When I go to my master sources I notice several sources for the same year census.  I don't know which one I should choose and when I choose one it has a box for source details.  Can someone tell me how to decide which census to pick and what information goes in the source detail box?

Tuesday's Tip - customizing, editing & printing (oh my!).

Tuesday's Tip - It seems that YouTube had a backlog of videos to process, so here it is, this week's Tuesday's Tip (in under the wire). Today we cover 3 questions asked this past week in the LVUG Community. Why not watch and see if any of the answers help you.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ced_jL-cFT4

New to LVUG community.

My name is Mitch Parker.  I was born and raised in Kentucky.  I started doing genealogy approximately May 2010.  I have been using Legacy since then.  I believe I started with Legacy 5.  I now am using Legacy 8.I am searching the following direct line surnames: Parker, Elliott, Harp, and Bryant.  I first learned about LVUG approximately two years ago when Linda McCauley mentioned it in a workshop.

Census entries - an example.

Michelle Kaplan - here is how I have mine entered.  You can also change how the event is worded. by going into the event details.

How to customize family screen in Legacy.

Can someone direct me to a Legacy video I watched recently where we were taught how, in the Family View section to change the titles of the areas titled 'Born', 'Christened', 'Died', 'Buried', 'Death Cause' please?  I know I watched it recently but I can't find it now that I need it.  Thank you.

Shannon and Monique - our LVUG community co-moderators.

Just wanted to say thanks to two members of the LVUG Community who are always willing to pitch in and help out - they answer questions, make suggestions, and just generally keep the conversation percolating here. Because no good deed goes unpunished here , they have a fancy new title - join me in a round of applause (and a big huge thank you) for our newest moderators Shannon Thomas and Monique Riley. Now everyone go out and have a great weekend !

A media question - I'm using the scrapbook.

I am trying to figure out when I attach media what gets put into a scrapbook and what doesn't. It seems to depend on whether I attach the media to the event versus  in the family view using the media option with the individual.   For example, when I attach a census record to the event  plus in the media file under the individuals name in the family view when I go to Reports - Other Reports - Scrapbook and leave all the boxes checked that are standard by Legacy both media files show up (ie the one attached to the event and the one attached to the individual).  However, when I go to Reports - Publishing Center - Add Picture Scrapbooks into the book you only get  the media that is linked to the event and not to the individual. I'm really confused!  I really want to add my media files correctly so I don't end up with a mess when I try to take advantage of the publishing options in Legacy.

My use of Legacy and social media (new to this LVUG community).

I joined LVUG some time ago (2 Years?) and have been using Legacy much longer than that. Current version is Legacy 8.0 deluxe. I'm a firm believer in 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' so seldom upgrade to new versions. I 'inherited' a freebie copy along with a database of one line of my family back in the early 2000's and switched from whatever I was using at the time (something free downloaded from the internet I'm sure!). The initial database was my Pott{i,e}nger line which has been pretty thoroughly researched for many years by many genealogists both amateur and professional so I didn't bother to do much with that other than update it with my own immediate family. When I retired in 2003 I decided to learn who all my great grandparents were (I knew most but not all and grew up down the street from two). I've learned that and much much more. We're currently working on my LEE line (no, not THOSE Lees!) and that has been a REAL adventure

New to LVUG community.

I don't actually remember when I joined LVUG, probably about 2 years ago, but I really haven't done much with anything on G+ until just recently.  (Like most of us, my personal life interferes terribly with my genealogy addiction!!)  Anyway, I've been doing genealogy for 17 years and was actually fortunate to have already had several of my families already plotted out, meaning I've been able to work forward, not just backward.  I started out with FTM back in that late 90s but it was, then much too simple a program for a researcher taught by a librarian (i.e., "cite your sources!") so I moved to The Master Genealogist, which I still like but about 4 years ago I moved to Legacy, mostly because of its really open nature:  webinars, sharing, ease of use while still being thorough in the data-fields.  Really, an all-around good program.  Oh, and I use Legacy 8.5 Deluxe. Mine and my husband's families were all here in what is now the USA between 1635 &

New to LVUG community.

Hi folks, My name is Michelle Kaplan and I live on the east of Queensland, Australia.  I've been using Legacy for a number of years now (can't remember how many).  I am currently using Legacy 8 Deluxe and absolutely LOVE it and recommend it to others in other genie communities.  I'm proud to say I descend from a long line of convicts (at last count I think it was 11) & they have been extremely interesting to research.  It has certainly opened my eyes to how good we have it in today's day and age and I am eternally grateful for all they endured in order for me to be able to lead the life I do today.  I know I am not using Legacy to it's full potential but at present it does what I need it to do and am prepared to learn what I can when I can.  Thank you Tessa Keough for providing such a wonderful service to the genie community.

A blog post highlighting some of the Legacy's Quick Tip videos.

I wrote a blog post on my work blog highlighting some of the Legacy QuickTip videos http://www.gouldgenealogy.com/2015/05/legacy-family-tree-i-didnt-know-it-could-do-that-video

New to LVUG community.

I just joined the LVUG following the brilliant Specialized Studies Webinar with Tessa Keough. I use the Legacy 8 Deluxe and am consistently impressed with the standard of the software and find that using Legacy Family Tree a joy. I’m perfectly happy using Windows 7. (and not brave enough to upgrade). I live in South Wales, UK, and have been researching my family tree for about 5 years. Ireland for surnames Aiken, Eakin, Burnside, & Gamble, and in Wales for Williams, Davies & Morgan. Thank you for allowing me to join you, and I look forward getting to know you all. George

Question about printed reports.

Is there a way to get a printed report in the same format as the web pages that are generated? (The web pages are great to get people to see what you have and where they fit into the whole scheme...) As an example - here is one branch of my family's web pages: http://genealogy.johan-potgieter.com/ueckermann http://genealogy.johan-potgieter.com/ueckermann

Tuesday's Tip - A tour of the LVUGCommunity here at Google+.

Today I thought I would take you on a tour of the LVUG Community here at Google+ (especially helpful for all our new members and those who aren't too familiar with communities). The recording program I used recently updated (why do they do that?!) so I am still playing with it - you might want to play with your settings when you watch. Will have that recording program set to rights by next week. We are thrilled to have each of our 1050 members here.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcaNZ4iYhzM

How to get back to the family view in Legacy - I'm lost!

Beginner question:    How do I get back to the Family View once I have been looking at charts and other views? I looked at the help files and they describe all about the Family view, except how to get there. I don't want to fave to exit and reload the software each time to get there....

Just joined LVUG community.

Hello All, My name is Mike. Like many others, I have joined the community following Tessa's great webinar.  I have been researching my family for over 25 years now.  I created a family history book for my Dad's 50th birthday and got bitten by the genealogy bug.  I live in South Wales, UK and am more than happy to help anyone who has Welsh or UK ancestors.    I have been using Legacy for many years now and am a big fan.  I am currently using Legacy 8.0 with Windows 8.0. I am looking forward to sharing with you all. Bye for now from a very windy and rainy Wales!

What about unrelated people in our family files?

I'd like to add some people to my Legacy Family Tree who played important rolls in my dead rellies lives but were not related.  I'd just like to know if & how others here get around this please?

Another new member of our LVUG community.

Hello!  My name is Dawn Byrnes and I've joined the community after attending a webinar with Tessa.  I am researching my family tree for a wedding present for my children. My goal is to get back 7 generations on all branches of the tree.  I love Legacy Software and I'm looking forward to any tips and tricks. Thank you.

Just learned about this group through a the fantastic Legacy Webinar by Tessa.

I've been using Legacy for several years but do not feel like I take full advantage of its potential.  Really looking forward to learning more about how to use the scrapbook feature and some of the publication features.  I've been playing around with them but can't quite get what I want.  I'm sure I'll learn what I need to know from the experts here.

Just joined this LVUG community.

Hello!  My name is Jessica LaPlante and I've joined the community after attending a webinar with Tessa.  I am researching my family tree with surnames: LaPlante, Bergeron, Belville, and Weiss.  The German (Weiss) line is the most difficult - if anyone has tips on searching German roots, I'd love the advice!

Question about RTF file.

HELP PLEASE! Continuing Issue: A month ago, I posted an inquiry about the RTF output report and the problem with source citations, for a Modified Registry Report; hoping to find a workaround. The same day, 6 April 2015, I wrote to David Bredan.  Since then I have not heard from anyone.  My frustration with Legacy is beyond words. A whole month David???? Email included in formal letter, snail mail. Has anyone figured out how to produce a RTF file with only 1 set of source citations? Second Problem: I just ran a RTF version of the Multiple Lines of Descent Report and this did not produce good results either.  Again there are two sets of source citations but even worse, the numbering system is continues.  A registry report uses a numbering system that should only be continues for related individuals.  The three lines of descent I used and hoped to include in one report, are not related families. Unfortunately, the numbering system runs them together, each new family l

Question regarding media and my Legacy website.

Okay, folks, third attempt has not gone well.  I found the Attach:  area.  It's not a photo, it's not a link to a website; it's not a video; it's not an event; and it's not a poll...  It's a file...  It's a .ods file.  So I am clueless and my learning curve time is out for today.  I'll try to check back later, but for now it is Home Blessing Time known in some circles as clean the house time...

Merging a few duplicates - question.

Merging a few duplicates and noticed the counter at the bottom. Whenever I click merge both of the numbers change. Example 109 of 217 becomes 110 of 218. Seems to me that the second number should be constant or am I missing something.

New to this LVUG community - long term user of Legacy.

I am Mabel Slinkard Horrocks researching my paternal line (Slinkard/Young) and my maternal line (Zenner/Remus). Have used Legacy for  couple of years - now Leg.8 and Windows 8.  LVUG has solved a couple of problems for me.  Thanks to Tessa and a great bunch of members.

I've run out of memory - what gives?

"My legacy people," states ran out of memory. I was trying to find connections with Family Search, when this happened. Trying something new in the Legacy tabs. What did I do wrong?

New to LVUG community.

Hello Everyone, I'm glad I found this community.  I've learned some great tips in the less than an hour I've joined :) I've been using Legacy version 8 and am curious about one section of the Family View that I've never figured out.  What does the "H:XXX M:XXX W:XXX" mean to the right of the bookmarks at the bottom of the page? Thanks for any help you can give, Susan

Getting Legacy master file into a spreadsheet - how?

Tessa, wonderful webinar on Wednesday.  I do have a question on "How Did You Do That?"  How did you get your Legacy Master file into a spreadsheet?  I have been searching Legacy help file...NO help unless I am not searching the correct key terms.  A nudge in the correct direction would be extremely appreciated.

In case we haven't had the chance yet to say so welcome to the LVUG community.

Photo by Katie Moum on Unsplash In case we haven't had the chance yet to say so welcome to the Legacy Virtual Users' Group (LVUG) Community here on Google+. We have had a jump in numbers this week and that might have a little something to do with the Legacy Webinar last Wednesday. This is a team effort and includes Linda McCauley Carol Stevens (both of whom helped me start this Community and keep our posts on track), as well as super members Shannon Thomas and Monique Riley who regularly share their knowledge of Legacy as well as other software (Evernote and AniMap are recent examples).   I'm happy you found us and hope you will take the time to:  (1) introduce yourself , tell us perhaps what your research focus is (families or locations or if you are doing a specialized study); (2) tell us which version of Legacy you use (and that is helpful if you are asking a question or have a problem); (3) read through the About this Community section (s

Great webinar Tessa.

Great webinar Tessa Keough and I see we have many new members because of it. Welcome to all the new members. This is a great place to learn about Legacy from a lot of helpful people.

Just retired - getting back to genealogy!

Hi, my name is Denise Laurion Gray and I am researching the Laurion, Lorion, McKenzie names, plus of course the other lines. I have been using Legacy for about four years, but have just retired and am now able to do more genealogy research.

New to Legacy and this community.

Hi my name is Lillie. I am new to using Legacy so I am starting at the bottom. I hope to be able to use this community to learn a lot of information to using the software. Thank you for letting me join.

Question about backing up settings.

Hello: Tessa asked Geoff in Wednesday's webinar about backing up Legacy 8's settings. I did not hear the answer (perhaps I signed off too early.)  Would someone please post simple instructions for doing this?
