Considering the extent of misspellings in census records, how far do you go in re-transcribing before entering in your database? Or do you?

I am still in the marriage mood for Tuesday's Tips. I was over on Facebook (yes I go there - some great genealogy focused groups and information!) and the subject of annulments and how people enter them in Legacy came up. We don't have many in my family, but we do have a few - both civil and religious. And it got me thinking that we have the ability in Legacy to show an annulment (whether civil or religious) as "status" in our marriage events/facts. Do you include status in your marriage entries? Do you include other items besides the date and place of the marriage in your marriage entries? We had a wedding in the family last weekend. It was a big, noisy, wonderful Italian/Irish/Slovenian event - complete with pre-functions (4 showers, as well as bachelor and bachelorette parties), the rehearsal (a bit like herding cats) and rehearsal dinner (about 80 attended that - neither side has small families), the nuptial wedding mass, the reception, the day after family picnic, and the small (only 40 attended) opening wedding presents get together with the bride and groom (which closed out the weekend). That evening they took off for their honeymoon to be followed up with 2 more receptions, on the East Coast and in the Maritimes. My first thought was I need to use my smartphone to take lots of photos and some video (the bride's parents' toasts were so amazing and so heartfelt). I hope someone can help me. When I entered a certain leg of my wife's family, One guy had two wives, but all their thirteen children seemed to have one mother. Recently I discovered more information, and a new source and dates now seem to suggest that all the kids were from the other wife. Is there and easy way for me to "give them to the other mother"?

Someone had the idea to list all Source Detail under Master Source/Text/Comments. And it scrolls on and on and on and on. Can hardly blame them. The wording Text/Comments does kind of suggest this is where to put it.

For example, several weeks ago I input some information I obtained on my grandfather and forgot to add an event into his father's file because it was new information.   I don't want to re-input all the source detail information and I'm figuring there must be a way I can pull up this previously used source detail information I forgot to enter.

Tuesday's Tip - Good morning to all our LVUG Community members. Today is Teacher Appreciation Day. Do you have educators in your family tree? Have you included an event/fact for those educators and shared a bit of their story in your Legacy family file. Some things to include - (1) when and where did they teach? (2) what was the name of the school and what grade(s) did they teach? (3) what was their background - self-taught, any teaching credentials? (4) how many years did they educate? (5) were any of your family members responsible for teaching in particular places - military installations, native reservations, private or public schools? (6) did any of your ancestors help educate in the Great Plains and Prairie states in the 19th century (think Little House on the Prairie - but the reality was much, much more)? (7) do you have any current family members who teach? You might ask them how they think the profession has changed since they have been involved. Today - give so...

It's probably been addressed before - most likely several times, but due to my short memory recall, here's my question anyway.  There are some twenty-odd spellings / variations of my family surname - Gallagher.  In most situations, I found the spelling the result of an illiterate, political appointed census enumerator, or some other similar situation...  how is the best way to enter that person into Legacy?  I realize that we should capture the evidence as we find it, but that can certainly make future evaluations somewhat problematic - e.g., list all the "Gallaghers" - what about the Galligers, the Gallahers, etc.?  I have been correcting the surname and entering the recorded spelling as an "AKA."  What is the consensus of this highly-learned group?  Thanks for your thoughts.

As some of you know, Legacy provides us an option to print some reports/lists in a csv (comma separated value) format. One csv format is Microsoft Excel and I often put search results in an Excel worksheet so I can manipulate it and work with it outside of my Legacy family file. I attended RootsTech back in February and did a computer lab presentation on using Excel with genealogy. I recorded the presentation (15 examples on working in Excel) and thought some of our LVUG Community members who are new to Excel might find the videos helpful (I did each example separately - shorter and focused). Folks here solved my last question, so I'm hoping there is a simple solution here, too (perhaps buried deep in options)... (My question is at the end, if all my explanation is too long and unnecessary) With my previous software (Generations), I put much of my collected information on an individual in the "Notes" field.  In Legacy, I'm working my way through thousands of people in my database to  catalog Events properly.  BUT I still have information that better fits Notes, such as stories and things that don't fit into an event item and really fill in the holes.  In Generations, the Notes information would come after the vital statistics in a report.  In Legacy, the Notes and Research information comes first in the reports I've generated - that is weird to me because it results in a story about someone before the basic chronology of the person is given.  So my question: Is there a way to tell Legacy to put Notes information AFTER the chronologica...

' evening all.  I am working with a cousin to try to figure out how to log her Ancestry.com DNA test into my Legacy 8 program, but have hit a roadblock that I hope someone can help me with ... The first thing it asks is what kind of test it was.  Well, we don't know.  We have searched the Ancestry site and have not been able to determine what kind of test it is (they only have 1 test now but they fail to say the name of it).  Does anyone out there know what the current DNA test is?  Or which of the 7 Ancestry test options in Legacy I should/could use to record the results of the current Ancestry DNA test? Is it possible to print a "report" of all birth, christening, death notes?

I've been using the Windows clipping tool a lot and tried to paste a clipping into the general notes section with no success.  Is it possible to do this?  I changed the clipping into a pdf image and that still didn't work.  Thanks for any advice!

Hi. I just came across this group and joined it. I purchased Legacy on Wednesday when I learned of the demise of FTM. I have been watching a lot of tutorials but am wondering if someone can help me with a couple of questions.  I have been researching my genealogy for about 12 years or so, maybe longer.  Like many others, I didn't site my sources as I should have. I am taking this opportunity to start fresh, double-check everything, and then enter all of my data correctly. I was wondering what to do with my photos. I have digital scans of many photos. I understand how to get my pictures into Legacy, but I don't see a way to enter a source citation.  Do I just type it in manually? What do you do?   Along those same lines, I have some original documents (like my birth certificate). I obviously own the document. How do I enter and source that?  Do I just upload the item. Do I consider all photos and documents that I have in my possession to be "artifact...

I submitted a trouble ticket several weeks ago and did not hear back, but maybe the problem is something I'm doing wrong. In Legacy, many events allow you to add information in addition to the standard sentence that is generated for a report.  For example, the immigration event for one person on a family tree I'm searching would generate this sentence based on the basic information I put into the fields for description, date and place: Richard immigrated on the S.S. Caledonia on 23 Apr 1911 to New York City. But I had more information, which I put in the Event Notes section, and I checked the "add events to the sentence"  which would append the following: The ship had departed Londonderry on 15 April 1911.  Richard was described as 26 years old, single, bricklayer, British.   The Events dialogue box shows the appended/combined sentence correctly, but none of the reports will include the Event Notes for any of the events (immigration, census, and many m...

Tuesday's Tip (on Wednesday) - Today is Veterans Day in the United States, and Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in many other countries. Today we honor and remember our veterans - those men and women who served or serve their country. This should not be a one-day thought and certainly not when we are actively engaged in war or conflicts.   While there are a number of ways to honor our veterans (listed below - and please share your ideas), shopping is not one them . Let's give this remembrance day the attention it deserves by: (1) attending services at cemeteries and memorials, (2) contacting your government representatives and reminding them that we owe a debt of honor for the contract entered into (they agreed to serve, we agreed to provide benefits) (3) photographing and transcribing a local memorial to add those names to an online database (4) visiting a veterans hospital and offering to provide assistance (there are many ways to help out - check out VAVS ...

How does everyone handle the information in wills and probate records?  Do you type the whole will in the source citation, the whole will in the details for the specific individual, or type it out and add it as a media attachment?
