Questions about adding a census.

Adding a census. I started in Chapter 3 of Legacy Family Tree Version 9 Unlocked. On Page 70 Geoff added an unlinked male named John Williams. When I got to Page 92 where he showed the updated Chronology view of John Williams all I had was a Census and Occupation entry. Where did all the other info he had come from? I did not have a birth, anything about his spouse or children being born. Does each of these items have to be keyed in as an event? Does the info come from info keyed for John Williams?

Citing sources - how to clean up my Legacy files.

So that slayer of all documentation efforts, citing sources, is really a drag for me right now. Can anyone direct me to a good reference for cleaning it all up? I really took a hit due to Ancestry adding multiple citations. For example, I have three citations for my grandfather's name, two for his birth and still other facts all from the exact same census. So I have been going through every one, checking to see if any have images or extra details, and erasing all of them except one. But how do I relink all of the facts back to the same source citation? And is there an easier way? Any insights appreciated.

Using the source clipboard in Legacy 7.

As long as we are discussing sources-- I am aware of and use the source clipboard a lot and have 7 or my saved slots filled with my favorite and most often used sources. Love it. Also have the source clipboard setting 7.5 set to allow one source on the source clipboard. But i am curious about the other option in 7.5 setting "Allow up to 5 sources". I do know that when you click on the single bar, and you have a source in each one of the tabs, all 5 will be assigned to that particular event. Why would a person want to do that - in what situation? I guess I need an explanation as the value of this option. I think I would quickly have a very big mess.

New to Legacy from Family Tree Maker - some questions.

This is my first time to post to anything - apologies if I do something wrong. I'm new to Legacy - about 2 months - after using Family Tree Maker for about 6 months - left it just before they announced they were discontinuing it! I was used to the Family Tree Maker method of have both a master source and a master source citation (corresponds to "details" in Legacy). So if I realized I had forgotten to source some detail, I could just go back to the specific citation and apply it to the correct field. With Legacy, when I find myself in that situation, I have to totally recreate the detail before I can cite something properly that I missed the first time.   My question is: is there any way to reload a specific set of detail source information onto the clipboard from an existing, already assigned source detail.  In other words - I can see the information in the Assigned Sources box, and I can edit it if I want, but I can't "grab" it so that I can assig...

Entering military discharge in Legacy.

Here are the screen shots of what I did for my dad's honorable discharge.  I think you have to click on each to see the total picture.

How do I enter military discharge records?

For those of us in the USA who have had family members in the military, you know how vital discharge papers are - especially when you have to come up with them for various reasons. There are no source templates in Legacy for Honorable Discharge in the USA.  Sorry, but this really bothers me.  There are register templates and discharges from other countries, but not for the USA.  OK - now that I have vented............. Does anyone have a method they have used to source 'Honorable Discharge' papers?  I have several that I need to document. Thanks!

How to attach a scanned photo of birth certificate?

I just added a Birth Certificate and set up a new master source for it.  Question - should I attach a scanned photo of the BC to the source record or detail record?

How to cite a military biography?

I have a this "military bio" from rootsweb:   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txnavarr/war/world_war_ii/men_and_women_in_wwii/p105_106.htm#GREEN , RUFUS S. How would I source this?  I'm trying to find the right category in Legacy's SourceWriter but I'm not sure what this type of page would fall under. thanks, james http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txnavarr/war/world_war_ii/men_and_women_in_wwii/p105_106.htm#GREEN

A question on copying source documents.

A question on copying source documents. Just curious how others do it. When faced with, say, a double page image from a parish register with maybe 10+ different records on it, do you copy the entire page into Legacy so you can retain info on the page number, surrounding records, maybe a parish indicator off to one side, or do you crop the image to give only the target record? I realize there will be a difference in size for the image file, but is that the main consideration?

Quick question about sources in general.

I set up a source for a birth certificate.  There is quite a bit of data on the parents as well as the child.  Sometimes for the mother/father address all it has is a state name. I kind of feel that every nugget of info in my database should have as many sources as possible to strengthen the validity of the data. So in this birth certificate scenario I tend to use the BC as a source for the parent's birth place. I do this even when I know the parent's city/count/state from other info and the child's BC only has the state.  Is this going overboard with sourcing or do others do this also?

Footnotes with citations and events.

How do I create separate footnotes/endnotes for each citation for a single event?

Question about SourceWriter with BMD certificates

Hi everyone, I'm new here so please bear with me :-) I've just decided to buy Legacy Version 8 as whilst testing several programs I much preferred Legacy. Until I am able to obtain an actual copy of any BMD Certificates, I have used Free BMD to locate the index numbers and wish to enter these as Source Citations - probably like many newbies I'm struggling to get used to doing this correctly. In Source Writer I'm searching for BMD Index and then choosing:- Birth records> Birth certificate>England>Birth certificate, index> Online images. Once I complete the Sourcewriter wizard the citation does not give the Volume and page number from the index even tho I have entered this :-( Could anyone pass on some advice please as to if this is correct or what / if I need to change anything :-) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
