New to Legacy from Family Tree Maker - some questions.

This is my first time to post to anything - apologies if I do something wrong.

I'm new to Legacy - about 2 months - after using Family Tree Maker for about 6 months - left it just before they announced they were discontinuing it! I was used to the Family Tree Maker method of have both a master source and a master source citation (corresponds to "details" in Legacy). So if I realized I had forgotten to source some detail, I could just go back to the specific citation and apply it to the correct field. With Legacy, when I find myself in that situation, I have to totally recreate the detail before I can cite something properly that I missed the first time.

My question is: is there any way to reload a specific set of detail source information onto the clipboard from an existing, already assigned source detail.  In other words - I can see the information in the Assigned Sources box, and I can edit it if I want, but I can't "grab" it so that I can assign it to another field. I know - I should have saved it to the clipboard to begin with, but let's assume I forgot to do that, or I've already had to write over it because I'm using so many different sources.

Hopefully this makes sense.  Any suggestions?

  1. I don't know of that type of clipboard in Legacy but a generic clipboard will work just as well if you're using the Basic sources.

    Try Ditto. http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/

If you're using the Source Writer with all the separate fields for detail, I don't know. Is there any reason you're interested in the Source Detail separate from the Master Source? Can't you copy the entire thing? That's certainly possible.

  2. I am using the Source Writer, and I do want all of the source, both Master and Detail. But when I select the Master Source from the list again, there doesn't seem to be any option to also select existing Detail. So when I've got multiple families in the same county in the same census year, I can pull the Master Source for that county, but I have to recreate all of the individual family detail again. Am I missing something? I am using Legacy 8.0.

  3. Yes, but I think if you are using the free version, this won't work.  In the assigned sources for the person, click on the line that contains the source you want to copy.  On the bottom left of the screen, you will see a colum of triangles in various positions - there are 3 triangles then a dash and the one right below that is the source clipboard - you want to click that to copy.  It will ask if you want to overwrite and you say yes (that is only the clipboard, not your actual source!).  Then click on the line that you want to paste the source to and use the little - (dash).  That one is the paste.  You can paste as many times as you need to, including in different people.

  4. THAT'S IT!! I had totally missed that symbol hiding down there.  Thanks so much - that simplifies my life considerably.

One of the main reasons I went to Legacy from Family Tree Maker was the strong Legacy Users Groups.  Legacy Users Rock!

  5. I don't know how to add pictures here - that would have made it easier!  I am glad you found it!

  6. You can add images in an original post but I have not see how to do that in a thread (reply to a post). We can include links though.

  7. Thanks Tessa.  I will upload a snip next time & insert a link.  Sometimes it is easier to see it.

  9. I'm new to legacy myself. Just wondering, what this also a good time to use the option to share with other members. For example, if you have four people living at a certain address when you enter the details for the address as a residence event you can then click the option to share with all the members of that residence.

  10. I'm not sure what you're asking.  I am definitely using the "Share Event" button for multiple people living at the same residence (as long as I know for sure who was in "the family" at that time), as well as multiple people listed on the same census, using the Census Event for the head of household as the primary event. Is that what you're asking?

My original question was about how to get a citation re-loaded onto the clipboard when I (as I invariably do) discover something that I forgot to cite the first time around. In these cases, sharing an event isn't really appropriate.

  11. I guess it just seemed like the same thing and was trying to understand the difference. Like I said I'm new. 😊

  12. No problem at all.  Did my answer make sense?

  13. On tablet so sorry for shortcuts. If you use sharing not all gedcoms pick that. Ancestry doesn't. I use copy and paste so it shows up in person's timeline where ever I upload a gedcom.

  14. Hmmm. Good point, and thanks for the heads up.  There are so many things to consider, it's hard to think of them all! Do you alter each pasted version to be specific to the individual, or do you go with the "John Smith household" approach for all household members?

  15. I prefer to alter but I know some people don't.

  17. Sorry John. You know there has to be one in every crowd! I am still finding some in mine that didn't get fixed yet.
