Copying multiple events between people in Legacy.
Hi All,
Is there any way to copy multiple events between people in your tree. I was specifically thinking of census entries which I record as Occupation and Residence events.
Thanks Keith

There is no easy way to do a mass copy-paste. Your copy-paste clipboard can only hold one event at a time. Edit your first event to bring it up on the screen. Note the two small copy & paste icons on the lower right side. Select copy. Go to the 'receiving' person and add a new blank event, then select the paste icon. It transfers both event details plus sources. Carry on to the next person, etc. Repeat with your next event, as required.
ReplyDeleteI have 1 census event per census and I enter it in the head of household and then I share that event to everyone else. For the residence event I do the same as the census. The occupation event is done for each individual person and I copy the citation using the copy and paste feature mentioned above.

ReplyDeleteHi Shannon, thanks for the suggestion which sounds great on paper. However the last time I tried using shared events I found that FamilySearch can't cope with them. Possibly I should try again just in case they have sorted the problem. Does any one have any input on that?

Keith Drury Myers Shannon Thomas Shared events work wonderfully within Legacy. But until other operations adjust their algorithms or until Gedcom formats are revised, exporting them outside of Legacy remains an issue. I've not tried with FamilySearch, but neither Ancestry nor Rootsweb display them properly, if at all. At least IMHO.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't intended as a plug, but I've found that Clooz works well for documenting censuses (and other stuff) and exporting them, with appropriate birth, residence and occupation events, into relevant records in Legacy. It might eliminate the need to copy-paste multiple events. But it's an external application.
Hopefully there will be a fix for shared events not working with other software and Family Search. I don't have a need to export my Legacy database to another program and I do not connect my database with Family Search (at least for now). If you do export gedcoms or work with Family Search connection that I can see where this could be a problem. Here's hoping there is a solution in the future!!
