What does Legacy mean when it says, "define a printer"? Since my desktop died and I've relocated to a smaller space with a laptop, Legacy gives me grief every time I open the program (asking to define fonts) and then tells me I haven't defined a printer. In fact, I have installed my Brother printer; I'm just not hooked up to it. This would be alright if I wanted to print something to paper, in which case I would carry my laptop from the living room into my office and plug it in. But most of the time this is not my intention. The problem is it won't allow me to print to PDF or text either. I'm using version 7.5.

Considering the extent of misspellings in census records, how far do you go in re-transcribing before entering in your database? Or do you?

I would put this under Suggestions if there was such a category. I am still using v.7.5 with no intention of upgrading so it's irrelevant for me but I still like the idea. Here it is: an additional tab in the Notes section (General/Research/Medical) for something called something like Scratch Pad. This would be a dumping ground for work in progress, never to be printed in reports but just for collecting. For instance, I have a habit of searching census records, en mass, or marriage records, or death records, or what-have-you, and adding the information and citation into Research Notes to properly enter and cite later. Later could be by the time the number is up around 1,000. Is. Meantime, my Cuz uses Research Notes for actual, you guessed it, research notes. So and so may have had a second marriage, based on blah, blah, blah. Her opinions that matter. I would like to print out her opinions in book reports because I think they do matter. I found my Beeken family in the 1920 census, transcribed as Bulan ... and who could blame them considering the handwriting ... This small trick has helped me several times - Search using only the first names; name of head of family, first name of spouse and first name of one of the children. If one child doesn't work try another one.

Someone had the idea to list all Source Detail under Master Source/Text/Comments. And it scrolls on and on and on and on. Can hardly blame them. The wording Text/Comments does kind of suggest this is where to put it.

I've changed my links in the LVUG from JLog to Dropbox and that may confuse some people. After nearly ten years, my website is now closed. For anyone still interested, the entire content has been archived in Dropbox as MHT pages and linked from https://jlbeeken.blogspot.com . MHT is simply a form of HTML but you may have to set your browser to open them by default. Otherwise they'll look like a stream of goobledygook. It's a simple process. Download a page to your computer. Right-click and click Open With ... then choose Chrome. This should set it for all time. For Firefox you'll have to install the unMHT plugin first. Dropbox will throw up a 'sign up' box as an obstacle for you but you do not need a Dropbox account to download a page. Although JLog is presently re-directing traffic, the day will come when the old links are going to 1) hit a wall of ads or 2) land on the site of someone else who's bought the domain when my site comes down. ...

This is what I get when I search for MRINs (User IDs) between 5000 and 5999. There's only one (5562) that is an accurate result, but if I change the number it swaps with another one. And if I change that one it swaps back again and so on in an endless loop. Obviously, everything else is irrelevant to my query. Is it just me, or would someone else like to try a similar search?

What's the point of Legacy Search having a time limit to it? Sometimes I pause, and only for a few seconds, and the search starts again at the top of the search list.

I've been hoping forever to be able to use drag&drop in the individual Address windows. It doesn't work there (v.7) but it does work in other places, like Notes and Source Detail. For your added comfort and convenience.

Here's an idiot question: What do you call the United States before it was called the United States in your Master Location List?

Could someone please explain the difference between 'Unrelated' and 'Spouses and Inlaws'. In Detailed Search there's only one qualifier; Equal To. Relationship Equal To 'Spouses and Inlaws' should be different than Relationship Equal To 'Unrelated'. But, it isn't. When I search for 'Unrelated' I get Inlaws. When I search for 'Unrelated' minus 'Spouses and Inlaws' I still get Inlaws. When I search for 'Spouses and Inlaws' I just get Spouses.

I guess Legacy does have its limits. It's being pulverized trying to import a 98MB Gedcom with 103,000 people in it.

I wish I had started this years ago. At the end of each day, but before I run out of steam, I do a Search on "modified since yesterday's date" to quickly review my day's people and do whatever noodley little things I think I'm going to come back to someday. Which could be years from now.

When I use the Relationship Calculator I get two people related 13 times. But when I swap their positions left to right, they come out as cousins 24 times. Why the difference?

In trying to print a Source Citation report in Legacy it got to 74% and crashed for lack of memory. The other way to do this that will NOT stop part way is to print 'as if' to paper but choose your PDF printer instead. This assumes you have a PDF printer installed. The one I use is PDF Creator ( http://www.pdfforge.org/pdfcreator/download ) and it's free but there are others. Just Google it.

Why do these two files come up every time I open Legacy? Legacy7Update[1].txt news7[1].txt And again when I run File Maintenance? Is there a way to make them go away permanently?

I must be having a senior moment. I set my mother as the Starting Person and then ran a relationship report. About 7,000 people. I did the same thing with my father. About 8,000 people. There are over 19,000 people in my database. Where are the other 4,000?
