Legacy update stuck - getting rid of popup box.

Image
Two days ago I noticed there was an update notice on the Home page of Legacy 7. So I clicked to download. The auto install got stuck part way and it gave me this notice to download it from the website instead. That took me to a page for version 8, which I don't want. Now this box pops up every single time I open Legacy. Is there a way to get rid of it?

Tuesday's Tip - Using search functions with PDFs and Excel.

There has been lots of talk recently (hangouts, posts, videos in the Google+sphere) about Excel workbooks and Google Spreadsheets (and of course csv or comma separated value sheets - basically the generic version) with genealogy. Some have discussed how they download information from the various websites (FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeBMD, etc.) and put that data into a csv file of choice. I have a couple of examples on my YouTube channel as well as a video with 20 tips for Excel. And we know (or should know) that Legacy allows us to perform advanced searches and serve up our results in text, pdf and/or csv files . Oftentimes if we are acquiring data and not quite ready to put it into our family database file, a csv file is a good place for it. I use Excel workbooks for my specialized research and add a column to the workbook for my Legacy RIN and/or MRIN. That way I have a method of keeping track of individuals. I know others (Julie Goucher, Jill Ball and JL Beeken) hav

Media issues and Legacy freezing?

Has anyone had trouble adding photos to a person? Recently I have have been having trouble adding photos to Legacy 8 and when I try to add the photos and the programs freezes.

No hangout this month.

This month we will not have our regular hangout - consider it a little holiday as I am out of town to put the finishing touches on my parents' big anniversary party. We are all headed back to their hometown to visit with our extended family (lots of opportunities to get more information for our family tree!). Take care and enjoy these last two weeks of summer before all that back to school and end of vacations time rolls around. We will be back in September (same time same channel) on the third Thursday of the month .

Tuesday's Tip - Watch Russ Worthington explain how he uses FindAGrave.

Tuesday's Tip - Why not register for and watch Russ Worthington tomorrow as he shares his approach to working with FindAGrave. He will be featured on the Legacy Wednesday Webinar series. Russ is doing something that many of the other presenters don't do - although his genealogy program of choice is Family Tree Maker, he is using Legacy to show the process in action (well done Russ). JL Beeken has also shown how to use the Legacy search feature to work with FindAGrave and that has been highlighted at JL's blog and mentioned here in the Community. Using FindAGrave (and similar sites) is a great way to find those clues (and sometimes the gravestones and additional information) about ancestors. Why not watch and learn - and then apply that knowledge. After the webinar, if you have any suggestions or additional tips to share - place them right here in the Community !

Legacy asking me to convert my files - what gives?

Well this is odd. Opened up Legacy and it told me I had to convert my file (??!). I originally converted my file from 7.5 to 8.0 a few months back BUT did that and now I have 2 copies of the same file. Closed out and when I opened again - you guessed it, Legacy said it needed to convert - now I have three copies of same file. Anyone else having this issue today (used Legacy yesterday and no issues).

How to run a simple search with modification date - help.

I am trying to run a simple detailed search to find those people modified on a certain date.  What format do I use for the date?  I have run several tests and I cannot get it to work.  I am clicking on Find > Detailed Search,  under Primary Condition, "Look for Whom", I chose "Individual", under "Where to Look" I chose "Modified Date",  under "How to look" I chose "Equal To", under "What to Look For" I typed "07/08/14" (meaning July 8, 2014.  I have tried this test in both version 7.5 and 8.0.  I get the message, "No records were found with this criteria" even though I can plainly see there are records with this date.  Also, if I choose "After" in the category "How to Look", and use the same date, it brings up ALL the records in my file, which is not correct. Hmmm. . . . Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Footnotes with citations and events.

How do I create separate footnotes/endnotes for each citation for a single event?

Moving files between drives - help.

Again Good Morning. What I neglected to mention in my last message is that I am about the most technically inept person around these parts.  It seems that I moved the first file from my D drive correctly.  I then moved the other files from the D drive back  to the D drive.  I now have everything in Legacy and what I am going to ask for for Christmas is regular access to a fifteen year old..   Thank you all for your suggestions. Elizabeth

Question about Gedcom transfer.

Good Morning from New Jersey! I am new to Legacy after having used Family Tree Maker for about 15 years.  I moved my 16 branches to Legacy Standard Edition this morning through Gedcom transfers. I followed all of the instructions, I thought, and now can only find one file.  Where did all of the others go and how do I retrieve them?  Thanks. Elizabeth

Data entry with 5 marriages and a repeat spouse?

He married 5 times. He married the 3rd wife twice, in other words before and after the 4th wife. I have a date and document for their second marriage but not for their first, i.e. his third. I know she was the third because they had two children and I know their dates. While he was married to someone else (his 4th) she kept his surname. I'm inclined to put their second marriage into Events and leave the marriage information blank. What do you think?

Making the switch from TMG to Legacy - new here.

Hi Guys, I'm in Australia and have been researching for nearly fifteen years. I started using Personal Ancestral File (friendly), then went to The Master Genealogist (powerful) and ended up with Legacy - powerful yet friendly. I stumbled onto Tessa's video's and this group via Youtube Graham

Tuesday's Tip - Watch Debunking Misleading Records.

This week is an easy one (a no-brainer!). There are a handful (6) genealogy/family history speakers who I will make every effort to see in person, watch a webinar or hangout, or listen to a podcast or recording if they are the presenter. Why? Because these individuals have a great deal of insight, I always learn something, and they make every effort to update and keep their content current and thoughtful. For me, one of those speakers is Thomas Jones.  Over at the Legacy Webinar series, you still have a few days to enjoy his "Debunking Misleading Records" webinar before it goes behind the paywall. Perhaps you attended live (it may be worth re-watching), perhaps you missed it (check it out). Thomas Jones is not a light presenter (when I first started out in genealogy, he was a special speaker and his material was far over my head). I am happy to say now "I get it." So today's tip, this is a webinar recording you don't want to miss - you have until August

FamilyTreeMaker switching to Legacy - pitfalls?

I have been a user of FTM for many years but I am switching to Legacy.  What have other former users of FTM done, started over or just tried to clean up sources, notes, etc...?
