Why and when to use split screens?

I was wondering if when we  use the split screen is that for only Legacy family lines? I would like to use that when I am entering other types of records  ie. census, marriage, birth, death. etc. Could I scan the record and look at it with this split screen while I enter the information in?

Tuesday's Tip - use Legacy's Help feature.

Image
Photo by Mourad Saadi on Unsplash It is the Tuesday before Christmas and I am sure most of us are busy decorating, cooking or baking, picking folks up at the airport or train station, dealing with the children out of school, working an extra schedule that is not ours so someone else can travel for the holidays, watching the television specials, listening to holiday music , going to see Star Wars, or - for the lucky few - you have found time to work on your family history and you have your Legacy software open today (wow, I'm impressed!). Christmas is a time to be thankful (and give you a challenge - so please read through this lengthy post) Let me start by saying a huge thank you (1) to all the LVUG Community members who jump in and ask or answer questions (that is how we learn), (2) to those of you who joined us in 2015 (it is great to have new members to help share the knowledge), and (3) especially to my co-moderators who are always on the look out to welcome...

October 19th - Are you an up-to-date genealogist?

Image
Are you an up-to-date genealogist? I know, I know - we are all busy. Sometimes that means we forget to update our browsers, our operating systems, our software or hardware, our apps, and our our calendars (just to name a few items). When we fail to update, we are often leaving ourselves open to security issues, or foregoing improvements or corrections.  In Legacy - it is a simple matter of going to the Home view and taking a look at Updates - you will quickly see if you are using the most recent version (or update to that version). The reasons for an update are varied - sometimes something has been fixed (yeah!), sometimes more research guidance has been added (double yeah!), and sometimes those Legacy folks sneak in something new! You can always find out why an update has been made and what is included by going to the Legacy website. For other software - check the About section, there is usually a "check for updates" tab. Microsoft puts out updates (you determine w...

October 15th - Take advantage of the quality control built into Legacy.

Image
Do you take advantage of the quality control built into Legacy? If you click on the Reports tab you can then click on Potential Problems Report . Whether you view the report on your screen or print it out to work with - you have a "fact checker" in Legacy. But as with any good automated fact checker, the user needs to provide the parameters before the fact checker can do its work . Legacy comes with some defaults built in but the user (that is YOU) can always change things up. You can work your way across the tabs in Potential Problems and choose what fits your situation AND choose the ages or numbers that work with your family. That is what I did (we have more than a few couples that started their families before they were married so that is one item I unchecked; we also have long-lived people so I bumped up the age for death to be a potential problem). Be sure to check out the various items and then run the report. I always run the report to my screen and then wor...

October 6th - How do you identify yourself?

Image
Photo by Vladislav Klapin on Unsplash So when you think about your origins or ethnic background, how do you identify yourself? My ancestors came to the USA late enough that I have always considered myself 50% Irish, 25% Slovenian, 12.5% Swedish and 12.5% Norwegian for my origins while being 100% American as far as my nationality. The Origins Report in Legacy takes a look at your family file and based on what you ask it to look at (and how far back you have traced your lines), it will produce a visual report . I don't know about you but I love visuals! Today - let's play with the Origins Report . A couple things to keep in mind are (1) how many ancestors you have included in your family file, (2) if you have included locations for them and how those locations are read by Legacy, (3) that boundaries for countries and who rules them may not be how your ancestors saw themselves. Take a look at the images included here - I show you how to find the Origins Report, what...

Making an Ancestor Book - questions.

I'm trying to make an Ancestor Book.  When previewing my book there are a lot of blank entries for dates and various events.  Is there a way to have the report not print fields that do not have information entered?

How do I show the RIN next to the individual's name?

How do I show the RIN number next to the individual's name?  I use to have it like that and I do not know what I did that it no longer appears. Thanks

Using the repeat button in Legacy.

I can't remember if it was here or the Legacy User Group Facebook page where someone posted about using the 'Repeat' button when entering birth, death & marriage addresses.  Wherever it was I want to send out a BIG thank you.  I've always felt frustrated having to continually look up the addresses of cemeteries my ancestors frequently used but since finding out about the 'Repeat' button, I now adore entering cemetery details.  Thank you must also go to the Legacy people for making this facility available.

Question about transcribing documents in Legacy.

I am currently trying to save and transcribe documents and correspondence from family members that have been collected over a very long time from 1844 to 2010. This includes travel postcards, letters of everyday thoughts, family goings-on, etc. I think it helps document what they were doing and where they went. My question is do I put selected items in the events to show where they were or collect everything under research notes or in a Word document? The items are in paper and images as the item belonged to someone else. I have been placing snippets in the medical notes when they tell of their illness, diagnosis and general feelings on health and documenting where the statements came from. I put some in events such as a postcard saying an uncle was taking the train to North Dakota. He was in construction at the time. In some cases without the letters I would not know where these people lived, worked and any thing else about them. Am I on the right trac...

Importing citations into Legacy - how?

Can I import a list of citations/repository from program like EndNote into Legacy 8?

Tuesday's Tip - How to find a married woman in your Legacy family.

Tuesday's Tip - The question came up in a couple of places about how to find a married woman in your Legacy family file when you don't know her maiden surname. We show you three ways of getting to the family file,  as well as a little bookmark bonus at the end of the video. If you have another way, why not share it below in the comments section. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUTdhKsMFXY

Tuesday's Tip - 10 Tips for Using Legacy with specialized studies.

Because I put lots of work into it and I think these tips are useful whether you are working on your own family history or any type of specialized study, why not check out the Legacy webinar from last Friday - 10 Tips for Using Legacy with Specialized Studies . Then comment below which tip(s) were new to you or if you think I didn't include a really important one! Also on behalf of our LVUG Community welcome to our newest members - 20 of you have joined since last Friday . If you are new here, please introduce yourself (use the Getting to Know You topic) and why not add an avatar - so we can put a face or an initial or perhaps some creative artwork with a name. Take a few moments to read the Guidelines (just click on that topic) and the About section (over on the right). Thanks so much for joining and we look forward to seeing your tips, suggestions and questions on Legacy .

Using Function Keys F4 & F5 with your notes and sources.

Image
Using Function Keys F4 & F5 to have your notes window & sources window open at the same time... I just stumbled on a shortcut that allows me to have my notes AND sources window open at the same time when editing an individual.  Here's how it works...and it only works in this order.. (1) Click on Notes (or press F5) to open the individual's notes window (2) Press F4 to open the sources window at the same time. This allows you to edit, copy etc the sources.  You then need to close the Sources window before you can use the Notes window again. I found this useful when reviewing my "Proof" notes that I record to explain why I believe a certain fact.  I can flick between my notes and sources quickly and still have the main Family screen visible to see the key relationships.  Hope this helps someone. Mike

How do I print To-Do items for a tagged group?

Image
How do I print To-Do items which are for a group of tagged individuals but only for a specific repository? When I go to the Record Selection tab of the To-Do report it seems that I can only choose to print all items for individuals with a tag number OR all individuals for a specific repository.  Have I understood this correctly? If this is correct, does anyone have a neat workaround?  Thanks

Questions about my toolbar in Legacy.

How do I get the My Toolbar to stay displayed . On my main machine every time I reboot it comes back minimized. However on my laptop it stays maximized on reboot. I assume there is an option to control this but I can't find it. Any assistance gladly received.

I question about charts in Legacy.

I've been asked a question about charts. A friend wants an ancestor chart that includes the siblings of the ancestors but not spouses or children of the siblings. I have created a family file that includes the required people but now want to make a chart that includes all. Any one got any ideas please? All I seem to be able to do is an ancestor chart with none of the siblings. I am using Legacy 8.0.0.499

Merging a few duplicates - question.

Merging a few duplicates and noticed the counter at the bottom. Whenever I click merge both of the numbers change. Example 109 of 217 becomes 110 of 218. Seems to me that the second number should be constant or am I missing something.

New to LVUG community.

Hello Everyone, I'm glad I found this community.  I've learned some great tips in the less than an hour I've joined :) I've been using Legacy version 8 and am curious about one section of the Family View that I've never figured out.  What does the "H:XXX M:XXX W:XXX" mean to the right of the bookmarks at the bottom of the page? Thanks for any help you can give, Susan

Search and focus group for location - a question.

Is it possible to extract where a group of people lived - i.e. where my Connor ancestors lived in New South Wales for example?

In Legacy 8, how do I select a subset of my family file?

In Legacy 8, how do I select a subset of my family file that consists of all someone's biological relatives?  This would include all direct line ancestors plus their full and half siblings (aunts and uncles) plus all biological descendants of these people (cousins).  To this I would like to add the spouses of those selected.  Thank you!
