In Legacy 8, how do I select a subset of my family file?

In Legacy 8, how do I select a subset of my family file that consists of all someone's biological relatives?  This would include all direct line ancestors plus their full and half siblings (aunts and uncles) plus all biological descendants of these people (cousins).  To this I would like to add the spouses of those selected.  Thank you!

  1. Go to Find on the Search tab and in the next window select the Miscellaneous tab.  Click on Focus Group and that will make the Create Focus Group button active; click on that.  In the next screen I think you will choose Add an Individual and Ancestors and then choose your starting person and make your selections in the next screen.

  2. Thank you Shannon.  I am able to use this approach to create a focus group of all direct ancestors and their siblings (plus spouses), but I can't figure out how to include in the focus group all direct descendents of this group.  Does anyone know how to do that?  My goal is to create a subset of my full family file that consists of all the blood relatives of an individual for use in DNA studies.

  3. Tessa Keough might be able to help you better with this one...I think she has done focus groups before.

  4. Do we have anyone who has done this or who knows the answer? Haven't done this to the extent that Jon Bale is asking about. Might be time to check out the Help section.

  5. The Focus Group is definitely the way to produce the results you want.  Shannon got you off to the right start with the ancestors.  Next, add to the Focus Group each individual and his/her descendants.  You might want to do descendants for each of the great grandparents.  Add any other things you want to the Focus Group.  When complete, then use the Focus Group to select everybody for an axport to a new Legacy database.  Open the new database and produce reports as desired or send backup of that database to relatives that want the info.  One more thing you may want to do is "save" the Focus Group if it will be used again.  Remember that a Focus Group is not a file of individuals but it is a collection of criteria that is used to find individuals.  So if more descendants are added to the file, the Focus Group will find all the new additions.

  7. Thanks, Ron.  I was hoping Legacy might be able to include all blood relatives of a starting person automatically.  From what you say, I'll be able to get easily all direct ancestors in that manner (as I have found).  However, to get all THOSE PEOPLE'S direct descendents will be a person by person manual process.  Correct?  If so, I'll have to figure out how to add to an existing focus group again and again.  Back to experimenting!
