How do I merge people?

Is there a video that can walk me through the steps for merging people? By that, I mean an explanation of each tab in the merge option, lots of details. There are so many options and choices; I'm paranoid I'm going to lose information in the process. I've already lost some information, somehow and I don't even know when it happened, didn't realize it until I wanted to look at them later. Maybe this could be a topic for a hangout?

  1. A video on merging doesn't ring a bell with me. I searched Tessa's youtube channel and nothing came up. That does sound like a good topic for a Hangout.  Although, the Help section in Legacy is good at explaining what you need.  Type in "Merging Records" and you will see info about all the different options.

  2. Karen Richard I am working on a blog post about merging.  I am hoping to get it finished and published tomorrow on my blog.  I will post the link here once I am done.

Do you have any specific questions that I can address in the blog post??

  3. Can't wait to read your post - and it does sound like a good topic for a hangout (they will be back on track come April!).

  4. I checked the help section, but sometimes I just don't follow as well with written directions, or they aren't detailed enough for me. I'm not sure I can really pinpoint a specific question, I really don't dare to do anything because of how many tabs and options there are. I'll be sure to check your blog, Shannon. Tessa, I'll look forward to new episodes. I've been marathoning through old videos and having such a great time learning from you all! I'll be able to use Legacy more efficiently after seeing how you folks use yours.

  5. Karen Richard I'm not good at following written instructions either. Some days my eyes just glaze over and I have to come back to it when I can slow down.

It took me awhile to get onto Merge. Like you say, there's so many options. What got me through it eventually was slowing down and looking at things individually. This button, that button, this tab, that tab. I had to come back to it over and over again. Eventually it started to click. Later, more things about it clicked. It's not hard but you have to be able to see what the point of it all is.

I agree; watching a video would be simpler. But barring that possibility it's still possible. Try not to go at it head first. Sit back and let it wash over you bit by bit. Do the same thing with Legacy Help.  Each time you do that another part of it will make sense.

  6. Maybe I should create a fake tree, drag a few people from my real tree and play with merging there. By the way, in one of the older videos, Tessa touches briefly on merging, then comments that it would make a good topic for a hangout lesson. I thought it was funny to come across that.

  7. Karen Richard That sounds like a pretty good idea.

  8. Karen, something you also might want to know about duplicates is the cool instant duplicate checking feature available in Legacy 8. When you are adding new individuals, Legacy instantly checks to see if perhaps they are already in your family file, helping you avoid inadvertently adding duplicates.

  9. Yes, that is a cool feature. In this case, I already know Delia will be a duplicate. I had plans for doing this with some other people, too, so the merge wouldn't be so overwhelming. I need to have more control, there's no way I want to deal with hundreds of duplicates!
