Very helpful - thanks!
ReplyDeleteDoes this automatically bring all sources from one to the other? I have my working tree in Legacy, but I had won 3 months free on ancestry a while back. I focused on attaching sources and adding new people as I found them. Now I have people there with more sources than in legacy, or new people. For instance, Delia is in both trees, but her parents and siblings are only in my ancestry tree with sources attached. I downloaded ancestry as gedcom to legacy and learned from Geoff we can drag people from one file to another. When I did that, I dragged Delia's dad with his whole family, which includes Delia who is already in this tree. There are some records from the ancestry tree I haven't added to legacy tree and I'm lazy so prefer to merge with sources. I'm not sure I explained this very well. Does this make sense to you?
ReplyDeleteThe short answer +Karen Richard is Yes. But merging two people in Legacy is a different operation from dragging a person from one Legacy file to another. In the Merge operation, sources for facts, events, notes, etc. that you keep with the merged person will transfer over. The source details for any items that you discard will disappear.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you have a sourced birth date or place for person X and a different sourced birth date or place for person Y, when you merge X into Y you must choose one or the other - you can't keep both. If you want to keep a record of both, you can create an Alt. Birth event for either X or Y and copy the date, place and source detail you want to keep to that event. Then you can copy that event and its source to the merged person on the events tab. The same applies for other primary 'facts' - christening, death, burial, marriage.
Yes, I dragged the family simply to get them into the tree, now need to merge the one person who is in both trees. Strangely, the people I dragged aren't in the name list so I can't even find them now. I was going to play around with it, but they've disappeared. When I get that problem sorted and am in merge again I'll keep in mind your comments about each of these facts. Is it possible to create the alt events within merge so I don't have to leave it, try to remember which facts I need, and so on?
ReplyDeleteI will post a screen shot for you Karen Richard
