Our last question in survey - what Legacy features do you want to learn?

Okay - lucky number 7 and our last question in the LVUG survey - Today's Poll Question - What Legacy features do you want to learn about in 2015 ? Now I don't think there is a problem with voting more than once (a bit like early Chicago elections!) AND you can also leave comments (we are reading them!). If we have left something out (we only get 5 choices) or you want to bump something higher in the hangout list, just tell us.  So give it some thought ( locations, charting, sources, reports, master lists, events/facts, media, searches, customization, supporting programs, etc .) Thanks so much.

New to LVUG community.

I'm Janet from New Zealand. Just starting with Legacy 8 so it's an exciting journey.

Two more survey questions - what doesn't work with hangouts?

We are down to the last two questions so - Today's Poll Question -  What is the least helpful part of our LVUG Hangouts ? Go ahead we can take it - what doesn't work for you and please share any comments about how we can improve the hangouts (length, schedule, invitations, other logistics, etc.). Thanks.

Today's Poll Question - what works with hangouts?

What is the most helpful part of our LVUG Hangouts ? If we haven't listed something, please add it in the comments section. Thanks

Question about tagging in Legacy.

I poked around the Legacy help files a bit but couldn't figure out the answer to my question, so here I am. I'm starting out with Legacy and have entered direct line ancestors for me and my husband.  I've input birth and death dates and tagged the 150 direct line ancestors with Tag 1. I have started entering the 1910 census and my tree is starting to grow as I add siblings to my direct line ancestors.  I want to concentrate my Legacy research on the direct line. As my tree grows how can I best generate a report that will show me the direct line ancestors who should be on a certain census? For example, when I get to inputting the 1880 census, how can I generate a list of Tag 1 individuals who should be in the 1880 census? I shouldn't have to sift through hundreds of other individuals as the tree grows. I'm sure there's a way to generate a list of Tag 1 individuals alive in 1880, for example. Thanks!

Question on font sizes in Legacy.

Hi All, Legacy 8 Version: 8.0.0.459 I was having a bit of a problem with the font size on Legacy I have changed the minimum font size on Customize Legacy options. This works fine except it does not change the font size on the FamilySearch shared data screen which is what was causing me problems in the first place. Any suggestions? Keith

Today's Poll Question - do you attend hangouts?

Do you make use of our LVUG Hangouts ? And, if you haven't used them in the past, what would make you want to watch or attend them? Feel free to just vote or vote and comment. Thanks so much .

Today's Poll Question - favorite way to learn here.

What is your favorite way to learn here at the LVUG Community ? If you want to share the reason for your preference, please post in the comments section. If I have left a choice out, why not share with the rest of us. Thanks

Today's Poll Question - How often do you visit community?

How often do you check in here at the LVUG Community ? (Feel free to leave a comment if the choices don't fit your experience). Thanks

Today's Poll Question - your comfort level using Legacy.

What is your comfort level using Legacy Family Tree software ? This is not based upon the amount of time you have been using Legacy, but is based on whether you use it simply for basic data entry, perhaps use only a few features, have kicked most of the feature tires and made decisions about how you want to use it, or whether you put most of your family history research in Legacy (in conjunction with some other programs). Let's get some idea how our 834 members currently use Legacy .

Every day this week, we will post a poll question - help us plan.

Every day this week, we will post a poll question (it won't take but a few moments and it will help us with our planning for Tuesday's Tips and Hangouts). Please take the time during the week to answer the poll questions and thanks for being a part of our LVUG Community !

How do I add source to a media file?

Can I add a citation/source to a media file, i.e. a photo? I've checked the help section and couldn't see anything.

Online etiquette - play nice in the sandbox.

Oh and that post about Facebook Etiquette is from Jenny Lanctot - really useful for Facebook! http://aremyrootsshowing.jenny-ology.com/2015/01/13/tuesdays-tip-facebook-group-etiquette/

Tuesday’s Tip - Playing in our LVUG community sandbox.

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday’s Tip in the Legacy Virtual Users’ Group. Today I have a few tips and items of interest. Let’s get started. Controlling Your Google+ Stream - There was a wonderful post about Etiquette on Facebook today and it applies equally well to Google+ and Communities. Know that you can control your Google+ communities - all to help you not get overwhelmed with posts (but I think we are pretty good here with the number and types of posts – so keep them coming). Icons in Google+ Communities - You see that tile to the left (the one with our title – now take a look at the Notifications icon and the Settings icon (that gear that helps you make Google work the way you want it to). Use those icons, I do!  I have turned Notifications OFF on most of my communities (I don’t need to know about posts immediately and I don’t need to get a notification on my mobile or in my email). The moderators of our LVUG Community share the workload. We each visit our LV

Welcome to our new members!

Welcome to our new members ! We just wanted to post a gentle reminder that our LVUG Community's focus is on Legacy Family Tree software . We do talk about other programs we use in conjunction with our software, questions we might have about citations, research issues, some great links (with an explanation of why you wanted to share and how it might apply to our software of choice), and the like. This is not the place for your photography, your recipes, selling products or services (and that is different than telling us how a product or service works with Legacy). There are so many communities on Google+ (on all sorts of topics) that I know you will find them and join them to share your other interests. Oh, and Carol Stevens does a great job of catching those mistakes that get posted. She usually removes them and that's that - so no worries (unless you make it a habit). If you have any questions about what works here, take a look at the About section (over to the rig

Looking to customize my display on a few people.

I would like to use cremation or cremated on the individual display instead of Buried.  I click on Buried to change but there is not an event to select that is Cremation. Can a I make my own event to display?

How many tree and media backups do others keep?

Another question from a Legacy User Newbie: How many tree and media backups do you general keep? Sort of a 'Best Practices' issue. My inclination is to only keep the most recent last two and delete earlier ones but there might be an issue I'm not aware of.

Moving my Legacy files to DropBox - how does that affect program?

I'm in the process of moving all my Legacy files to DropBox including the program file. Once it's done I might find the answer but in the meantime, I'll ask my question. How do I change program target so it looks to DropBox for the .exe file rather than looking to my C: drive? Do I change it in Properties? I will want to pin the program to my task bar.

Thanks to Michele Simmons Lewis and Jenny MacKay for telling me about this group.

I am sooo grateful to Michele Simmons Lewis and Jenny MacKay. After several years of frustrations with FTM's syncing issues with Ancestry.com, I finally switched to Legacy about a month ago. I'm finding the basic functionality of the software to be relative easy to use. But I know there's so much more that can be done with it and that's where this community comes in. I've been reading the various posts and wow, I've a list of things I want to do in my tree. I started my family research journey in 2009 when I retired. No one told me that it would become an obsession!!! And what a wonderful one it is. I've met the nicest people through genealogy.

Reminder to back up your work - lesson learned!

Another back up your work lesson: I do back up every time I close my program, but I will leave it open for days and just close my laptop cover (have a separate monitor) Last week I decided to merge two file together, and did not back up at that moment, then decided that was dumb as I had cleaned up my master tree, so I stopped the merge and deleted the old file.  The next day I started working and noticed that I had double marriages for EVERYONE, and my tree had more than 40,000 people!  I did contact Legacy when I finally figured out what I had done and had to restore my file from Dec 18th!  I had even broken through a brick wall!  So now I am in my second day of trying to get back all the info that I lost.  I did make PDF files of the two families that I had worked on, and hoping that is all that I messed up.   Now, I am backing up as soon as I finish adding new info.  I have a flash drive attached and back up to that each time! Lesson Learned!!!

What a great way to learn more about our American history.

I am really looking forward to learning more about these records and resources from three accomplished presenters. Originally shared by Tessa Keough I am thrilled to share this news today from the Legacy Family Tree Website - the Freedom Webinar Series , honoring the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War. "1865 changed the trajectory of the nation forever." Four webinars (the Freedom Webinar Series) will provide genealogists and family historians with some serious research topics about African American and pre/post Civil War records research . Check out the website to learn more about the presenters - Angela Walton-Raji, Bernice Alexander Bennett, and Melvin J. Collier, as well as the specific topics. As an added bonus -  3 previous webinars (recorded and archived at the Legacy website) are freely available through January 2015.   Hats off to Pat Richley-Erickson for drawing our attention to the International Decad

I am participating in the genealogy do-over.

I am participating in Thomas MacEntee's Genealogy Do-Over and have stumbled on a free program called Genscriber to help you with transcribing documents. I would like to use the software but I also like to put the document's transcription into Legacy's note section for the associated event. Does anyone have experience transcribing using Genscriber and then exporting the transcription into Legacy?

I'm moving from FTM 2014 to Legacy 8 - questions.

I'm moving from FTM 2014 to Legacy 8. My import is done.  I figure I'd start by cleaning up my direct line ancestors first and re-writing their citations using the SourceWriter.  MY FTM 2014 citations are all in the format  automatically generated from syncing with Ancestry.com.  I've decided to start with the 1910 Federal Census listing my grandfather.  Basically I should set up the 1910 Census using SourceWriter and, after I am satisfied all information is properly recorded, delete the old 1910 sourcing and information pulled over  FTM 2014, correct?
