Moving my Legacy files to DropBox - how does that affect program?

I'm in the process of moving all my Legacy files to DropBox including the program file. Once it's done I might find the answer but in the meantime, I'll ask my question.

How do I change program target so it looks to DropBox for the .exe file rather than looking to my C: drive? Do I change it in Properties? I will want to pin the program to my task bar.

  1. why move the program file? you only need to point the program to your data file and leave the "program" on your computer or what ever computers you are working between.

  2. You won't be able to execute the program from another computer

  3. Ron, is your comment directed to Terry or to me?

  4. You can go about it a slightly different way. If you back up your Legacy database to Dropbox, you can restore it from there to any computer that has Legacy installed.

  5. Here is how I did it:  I moved everything Legacy to my Dropbox folder in a folder named Legacy.  I also have a folder called Legacy Backups and another folder called working database.  In the working database are all of my current Legacy Family Files.  (I use one main file but had a couple of branches off in other files and then there are two from other people that I refer to from time to time.)  I have a shortcut to Legacy on my Task Bar.  The first time I opened Legacy from the shortcut I imported the file I wanted to use and then Legacy remembers what file to open.  Under Options and then Customize go to 1. General Settings and make sure that in 1.2 Open last used family file automatically is checked.  As long as I close Legacy on my desktop I can use it on my Laptop from within my Dropbox folder with no problems.

  6. Hi Cecily,

I was directing the comment to you and trying to read your mind at the same time - I was guessing that you were thinking moving Legacy to dropbox would give you the same advantage as moving the files to dropbox - that is being able to share the program just like sharing the files.  I was trying to point out that if that was what you envisioned it wouldn't work.  Why do you want to put the program into Dropbox?

Sorry I was cryptic - I was responding on my phone while on the bus and typing a more detailed response wasn't easy.

  7. It sounds as though I've messed things up a bit since I moved my entire Legacy folder, including the program file, to Dropbox.

So my question now is: do I move the _AppData folder back to the C: drive or would I be better off just running setup again?

  8. Cecily,

I think there is terminology confusion on my part - when you initially used  'program file' I thought you meant the executable file ( Legacy.exe);  I was GUESSING that you thought by moving it to Dropbox the Legacy program could then be shared (executed) across devices and/or  users just like Dropbox data can be shared;  I was pointing out that program (executable) files can't be shared like data files.

Based on your last update it sounds as though 'program file' and '_AppData folder' are being used by you to mean the same thing?  I don't see any advantage of moving _AppData folder to Dropbox but as long as Legacy is working, why not??

By the way, what version of Legacy are you using?

  9. Yes Ron, that is what I meant. I have the most recent version of Legacy 8

  10. Thanks all. I believe I have everything working. Data, Media, and Backup files in Dropbox, Program files in Legacy Family Tree folder on C: drive
