How many tree and media backups do others keep?

Another question from a Legacy User Newbie: How many tree and media backups do you general keep? Sort of a 'Best Practices' issue.

My inclination is to only keep the most recent last two and delete earlier ones but there might be an issue I'm not aware of.

  1. I generally keep them going back 3 months but as each new month comes up I thin out the previous 2 so I keep one for about every 5th day. The reason being that I never know when I might unexpectedly come across something that lets me know I went awry sometime back and, as painful as that might be, I have a restore point. Generally, this is overkill but better than not enough. Each zip file is about 18 MB right now so space-wise it's not a big deal. Doing the backup is the important part.

I don't do Media Backups as I don't keep any files in the Legacy media folder. I keep all my genealogy files in a folder called ANCESTORS under My Documents and that folder is backed up daily to an external hard-drive as well as online.

  2. I find it's also useful to do a Check and Repair (File Maintenance under the File menu) periodically to correct any data structure errors that might creep in. It will find and fix some interesting things. I tend to do that about once a week, along with a data cleanup and compact the file. If Legacy hiccups for any reason or does not shut down properly, important to backup, then do a Check & Repair before doing much more.

  3. Thanks for the input. Ed, I wouldn't have thought of the Check and Repair. And I'm glad you mentioned the Compacting. I did that in FTM but didn't know there was the same capability in Legacy.

I have SO much to learn ;-)
