Legacy LVUG Community

I recently verified that I have a Mayflower ancestor. I am entering locations and need suggestions on how to enter Plymouth. Plymouth, Massachusetts? There was no state then or even a colony and certainly no county. Can anyone tell me how they have dealt with this type of early location? Thanks very much!

Sorry if this is a duplicate question - I just can't find anything about it. When I find a record on FamilySearch.org, it has a wonderful "Citing This Record" at the bottom. I have no idea how to put that into Legacy sources. I've attached a photo of one of the records for reference. Thanks!

I am sorry if someone already asked this, but I can't find it in the search. If I want to cite the Tanguay Collection found on Ancestry, how do I do that in Legacy? What do I call it? It is a genealogical database, but that's not one of the options in the Legacy citation program. I know it's not a primary source, but I was considering putting it in my database anyway. Do you all leave it out and just look for the original church records? Thanks in advance.

I have found a way to cut down data entry from sources that change very little, like Swedish Church records.  The first time I tried this I did it with fear and trembling, but it seems to works.  I will outline what I did here: My great uncle Johan Knut Carlsson appears in several Swedish parish record books  The only difference is the book number and the date range. 1) After making the entry for the first entry in book AI:56 (1858-1862),  I then 2) will select the same source and make the entry to the detail sections and then save.  This time he appears in book AI:62 (1863-1867) 3) I  then click on the Edit Source button, and make changes to the Source screen. 4) NOW for the word of CAUTION.  When you click on the SAVE  button, Legacy will give you a choice . Click on the SECOND OPTION: "2.  Apply the changes to a NEW copy of the master source."   This will create a new master source and leave the original the same.  If y...

Which is best, 1 file or 2?    I have just started entering into Legacy 8.0, just my father's side.  Before adding anyone on my mother's side, I was wondering if they should be TWO SEPARATE files, or have them all combined into one file?  I am NOT importing anything I currently have in Ancestry or the free version of MyHeritage, because I learned that a lot of it is incorrect.  I want my LEGACY 8.0 info to be CORRECT.  Thanks!

Does anyone have a method to enter Swedish Church Records?  I use Ancestry and ArkivDigital.  I wish there were templates like for England and Wales!

Hello Everyone, I'm glad I found this community.  I've learned some great tips in the less than an hour I've joined :) I've been using Legacy version 8 and am curious about one section of the Family View that I've never figured out.  What does the "H:XXX M:XXX W:XXX" mean to the right of the bookmarks at the bottom of the page? What is your suggested method of recording slave ownership in Legacy. Yes, that curious institution was/is despicable, but it is also a part of history.

What is the maximum number of people that can be put into one family file?

I looked through my Master Source List tonight and saw a few mistakes that needed to be corrected so they would be consistent with the others.  Well, over an hour later. . . I got them ALL corrected (there were more than a few to my shock and horror). Some gremlin had to have been playing in my Source List, because I would NEVER do that-- yeah right! #keepingitreal

A lot of my ancestors were farmers in the Texas Panhandle and on many of the Census records the city is listed as Justice Precinct # x, Precinct x, District x, or even Subdivision x of Precinct y.  My general understanding (guess) is that these are the designations for rural areas that are outside city limits.  First, can anyone verify if that is true.  Second, when populating events would you use these terms as the "city" value in a location field (e.g., Justice Precinct #15, Donley County, Texas, USA) or just generalize it as Donley County, Texas?  Normally I use the precinct info as the city.  However, I'm currently looking at a 1910 census and and a 1920 census.  1910 is for precinct 1 and 1920 is in precinct 2.  Can precincts change over time just like voting districts?  As always, I appreciate any advice from this most helpful group.

   This makes entering a shared event so much easier that having to create the event for each person.  When you create a new event, you will see on the right hand side, underneath the Help button, two small buttons.  The button on the left is to copy the event to the "event clipboard."  After you have completed the data entry for an event you can click on this button. This will copy everything from that event to the "event clipboard."  Next go the person  who shares the event, and open add event.  Then using the button to the right you can paste all the information from the "event clipboard" and it will automatically fill in the four fields on the event menu and all other data associated with the event. This is almost as easy as using the new shared event feature in Legacy 8, but should get around the concerns that other have expressed in this community.

When filling in info to an event menu and a mistake is made but not noticed and saved - - can this error be corrected so it won't continually come up in future postings?. For example  - brith  or cenmsus

Does anyone else have the problem of Legacy 'Not Responding' (freezing) when adding media? This is happening to me repeatedly & the only way out (that I've found) is to go to the Windows Task Manager so I can close Legacy but when I do that, I have to start over again attaching the media.
