I found my Beeken family in the 1920 census, transcribed as Bulan ... and who could blame them considering the handwriting ...

This small trick has helped me several times - Search using only the first names; name of head of family, first name of spouse and first name of one of the children. If one child doesn't work try another one.

  1. I used your trick of first names and it worked! A branch of my family is Bender. I found them in the 1910 Federal Census as Tender.

  2. Elizabeth O'Donnell Excellent! I thought it was kind of a cheesy trick and everyone was probably already using it. I'd been looking for that 1920 census for ten years. I thought I'd already seen every misspelling or mis-trascription of Beeken possible; Beacon, Buckin, Beckan.

  3. Sometimes you just have to search the census in the location where there were last living. I had a relative named Royce and it looked like Boise on the census and was index as Boise.
