Tuesday's Tip - Putting Legacy on a new computer.
Tuesday's Tip - We are 5 days into the New Year and like many people, Santa brought me a new notebook (I will keep believing as long as I get to enjoy the Christmas spirit, the Christmas spirits, and lovely gifts that come my way!).
I read up on how to put Legacy on my new notebook (thanks Millennia for making that process so easy). I also had saved my settings when I backed up my Legacy family files - so I knew I could mirror my 2015 look and preferences.
But in the spirit of the New Year I decided to backup (on my soon to be retired notebook) and then restore Legacy (on my squeaky clean and new notebook) and then run through customization (our preferences) - found at the Options tab. It took about 10 minutes to run through everything and now my family files have a new look (but most of the same preferences).
And I am now saving my Legacy family data files in OneDrive - so no matter where or when I work with my Legacy files, no worries about "versions." Of course I am backing up on an external hard drive on a monthly basis and every quarter I make an additional backup that is stored at my sister's house.
Now to finalize my research plans for the year - my focus will be on Murphy and affiliated families that migrated from Ireland to Nebraska.
What will be your focus in 2016? Are you working on one branch, working on a one-name or one-place study, going to a conference or seminar, or "finally" getting organized?
If you have not visited the Legacy Family Tree website recently (and heck, even if you have), be sure to scroll to the bottom of the homepage and then click on Tips from the Experts (lots of questions answered by Legacy staff) and Calendar (a Google based calendar so you can check out and sign up for Legacy seminars that will be of help to you in 2016). These are two great opportunities to learn more about Legacy and genealogy in 2016.
How fun! My plans. To just keep on catching up on non-recorded research and document linking. I'll be happy to get 1/8th of it done. Dreaming is such a wonderful thing.
ReplyDeleteGood old Santa - Windows 10? This year I plan on getting my personal Orlando's into Legacy before moving on to those in my one name study.
ReplyDeleteHave a great new year!
Yes Windows 10 and lots of RAM and storage. Got a great deal at the Microsoft store (super helpful people and great service - their holiday prices were amazing).
ReplyDeleteCarol Stevens my view is to make only a few research plans and have a focus - that way I only attend webinars that are useful to what I am doing NOW and don't get overloaded on things that are not part of my plans. I do a bit of filing and organizing on a regular basis - that one bite at a time process makes life manageable.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a treat having a zippy notebook to start playing with as my HP (really good hard worker) has slowed down and gotten filled up. My sister suggested only transferring over what I need and taking my time rather than putting everything on the new notebook. I think that is a good plan.
That is a good plan Tessa Keough . You know me, I roll with what is tossed at me. If I get near a research facility, I try to visit. Life has a way of tossing my plans aside, so, I don't do much focus or plans. Rolling along from Tampa this month!
ReplyDeleteBut you have a wonderful mode of transportation and you should take advantage of those stop and visits! I am still a bit more planted. Enjoy Florida
ReplyDeleteThanks Tessa Keough . this trip has had a few wonderful "family history" moments. Including the acquisition of 5 family quilts/coverlets. And a few other little tidbits. Scanned some photos, identified and photographed some family heirlooms. Take advantage of the moments when they present themselves.
ReplyDeleteNow, off to do a bit of linking.
My focus will be to fill in the missing pieces. I have a lot of people who only have information for 1 census year so I plan to go through and get all of the census data person by person. I also plan on working on some "best practices" so I can keep things consistent in my database. I'm hoping some research opportunities come my way...I will just have to wait and see!
ReplyDeleteMy goals for 2016 are to digitize as many paper records as possible and clean up my sources as I go. I intend to digitize my many outlook emails saved over the past 12 years and place those in pdf format. They are lofty goals but they are my plan.
ReplyDeleteJudy Burns - I think digitizing and organizing that system is a great plan. Do you have a filing system (are you using your current email labels/tabs/folders) or are you setting up a new one? If you are considering or reconsidering a "system" do give it some through (it often helps to mirror your paper system if that worked for you) and/or make some tweaks - see how it works for you - and then finalize.
ReplyDeleteAs far as sources go, I tend to add my sources before I add in the individual records (so right now some of my master sources are blank - hence I don't ask Legacy to "clean up" blanks). I did this with the Swedish Parish records, the US Census population schedules, as well as the Irish and Scottish censuses.
I spend a bit of time working through Evidence Explained examples and then enter the master sources - did that with a few books I have used or plan to use as well. It is a little bit of time spent at the outset but then you have your master sources ready when you enter those individual records.
Let's check in on the status of our goals end of first quarter of 2016 - best to all who are making the most of their genealogy and Legacy.
Tessa, I had email folders set up by surname or location. Beneath the surname, I had separate folders for individuals that I frequently exchanged emails with. I have revised my folder system in My Documents. One surname folder with separate folders for each of my ancestor couples. Under each of those couples, I set up five distinct folders of Correspondence; Photos; Vital Records; Wills, Probates, Obits; and Deeds & Misc. I have been moving things into those folders as I go. I had to create a destination for all those emails so decided to create a better filing system. I am concerned that I may not be able to keep Outlook because I don't want to use the cloud based program. So, I decided to preserve what I have collected. I was prompted to do this after I saw a video posted showing how to save the emails easily into pdf files. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR2jRW2mviE
ReplyDeleteIt involves using a program called cutepdf. I have used it often over the years and it is very helpful. All this information is probably much more than you wanted to know. :-)
No - not at all - I think it helps all of us when we learn how others do things. My only suggestion is to understand how any programs you plan to use work and put a few things in and then try and find them before you go full board. I have found the search functions great in Windows (I am a PC person) and I use tags in my documents to help find things. For our PDF software - making sure how it works, what is can find (will it search the document) and/or titles and folders are key. And the nerd in me loves to file and organize - I inherited that from my mom.
ReplyDeleteThe pdf file created by cutepdf is searchable also. Good luck to us all in our 2016 goals!
ReplyDeleteMy plan is to visit the cemeteries in Quebec where my father's family came from. I am very excited as I found the cemetery where the first male family member( and wife) who came to Canada are buried. Then to move on into New England to visit the cemeteries of both sides of the family. Actively using Find A Grave, to prep for the trip.
