Trying to figure out how to cite an email.

Trying to figure out how to cite an email.  Tessa Keough I am interested to know how you do since you are a lumper like me.  Anyone one please show me how you do it.  Trying to figure out what's going to work for me.  Thanks!

  1. Hi Shannon,

I am a lumper too (now!) and I use the source template which groups by correspondent I copy and paste the email into the source detail and I also save the email as a text file in my sources folder and I also attach as a doc. (I use a sequential file numbering system which makes it easy to search for eg R1716-EMAIL - Thomas, Shannon - 2015-07-02.
I guess if I had an email from a 'new' contact I would still set them up using this method.  Its not perfect but it it works for me far better than my old splitter method.  I would love to hear other ideas too.

  2. will have to play with this a bit Shannon Thomas and Mike Edwards  - we might want to make a Tuesday's Tip out of this. What do our LVUG members do? Share in the comments section.

  3. I do as Mike Edwards does. I'm a pretty extreme splitter but even I had to consolidate on this one.  I also modified the email template for pre-email correspondance. Just change Collection to written correspondance and Item type to letter. Not perfect, but doable.

  4. This might be totally out of left field, but as an Aussie  I find the basic source file is more appropriate for my needs. I have the person (commenting whether they are related or a researcher) as the Source, Personal communication as the type of record and in the detail, I write email, letter, date and anything else I need to identify the information.
