Hi my name is Trish from New Zealand.

Hi my name is Trish and I am from New Zealand. I am just a beginner so love this group. Could one of you clever people tell me if it is possible to run Legacy on two computers with one subscription. If so how do I do it.

  1. Hi Trishg63  welcome to LVUG!  I use Legacy on my desktop and on my laptop.  I save my databse file in dropbox so I can open the same file on both computers.  You cannot have the same database file open on both computers.

  2. thanks for that Shannon. I just want to be able to have it on both laptop and desktop depending where I am working

  3. You could also save the file to a USB drive and use it from there.

  4. I actually have it on 3 computers. You might need your customer number when you install it on each.

  5. I have an external hard drive that I save both the pictures and data to.  I just take my drive with me, but I back up on both the laptop and the desk top so it is like an extra safety.  I should some sort of cloud backup, but I don't know which one and I don't want to spend a lot of money.

  6. You can get dropbox for free if you don't need a large amount of storage space

  7. Shannon Thomas can I be rude & jump here please & please excuse my ignorance but I'm a bit of a computer dummy?  I use Google Drive to save my family history documents & photos for external safety.  So when you say you 'save my database file in dropbox', does that mean you have the Legacy program saved there as well, or do you mean that's where you back up to?  Thank you.

  8. michelle kaplan You can install Legacy on as many computers as you like and then link to the external documents wherever you keep them. When people talk about saving Legacy to Dropbox, they mean the backup of the database file. http://bit.ly/1sxfhL6

  9. michelle kaplan I do both.  My current database file lives in my Dropbox folder and Legacy opens it from there when I open my Legacy program.  I also save all of the backups to Dropbox; each time I close Legacy it automatically backs up my database file and media files to Dropbox.  All of my genealogy files are saved to Sky Drive (I have a free unlimited data account).  If my files are saved in Dropbox, Sky Drive or Google Drive they are all on my computer as well.

  10. Shannon Thomas A question on various cloud drives like Dropbox. Can you still access your documents if you lose your internet connection? I note on my iPad that when I'm out of wi-fi range, access to my documents disappears. Is it the same with a desktop?

  11. Ed Allard When installing the cloud drives on your desktop computer a folder is created on your computer where all of your files go.  This gives you access to your files even if they were created on your ipad (if they have completely synced).

  12. I understand about syncing devices Shannon Thomas. But when the Internet connection is down for any reason (and that happens here from time to time) are ALL the Dropbox/Google Drive/One Drive/Sky Drive, etc. files still available? Because when my tablet is out of range, most of my Dropbox files are "unavailable" even if they've been properly synced. So, despite syncing, the files have not actually been transferred to the tablet's drive. So, under what conditions do they reside on or are transferred to a computer's hard drive (or tablet drive) vs being sequestered in the cloud, accessible only with an Internet connection? If you lose your computer's hard drive for any reason, can you access those files from another computer that has been synced, but is not currently connected to the Internet? I think this is important for Legacy users to understand about cloud computing.

  13. Ed Allard

I have access on my desktop computer to my files all the time no matter what cloud service they are in and I do not need an internet connection.  As long as the files you put in those folders have uploaded online and you loose your hard drive you can still get the files from the cloud service.

On my phone I have to have service to get the files but I'm not sure about my ipad.  I rarely access the files from my other devices.  I believe you would have to have an internet connection to get them on a device because they would take up all of the space on your device.  With Dropbox you can download specific files to your device.

To remove the files from my desktop I would have to either go to the cloud service and delete them or go to the actual file on my computer and delete them there.

My computer is backed up daily using crash plan and those folders are included in the backup.
