Generating a count of people in Legacy family file.

How can I generate a count of the number of children, grandchildren, g-grandchildren, etc from one ancestor? I think it has something to do with tagging but I'm not sure.

  1. Kim Overholt I see that your question has not been answered and you re-posted it.  I am sorry that I haven't had time to look into it as I have had kids and grand kids visiting for the past week and a half.

I played around a bit in the Miscellaneous Search, creating a focus group, but wasn't able to get exactly what you are looking for. What I was able to determine was the number of the descendants and their spouses, but not just the descendants alone.

Maybe Shannon Thomas , Tessa Keough or one of our other LVUG members have did this before and know the answer (crossing my fingers).

  2. No worries. I had a compliment about the site before the question and was afraid folks might not have seen it. My family history book goes to print this week for distribution on Saturday. I know folks are going to ask. I just wanted to make it more visible.

  3. I have not but when I get home from work I will play around with it and see what I can figure out.

  4. Tagging includes spouses as well. I think it takes 2 ancestors to get ANY descendants!

  5. I don't think there is a preset report for this but you can get the information you want as follows (I hope this is what you are looking for):
    (1) Go to the ancestor whose descendants you want to count
    (2) Right click on an unused tag number to go to the advanced tagging window.
    (3) Check the "Make changes on tag" drop-down shows the tag number you want to use.
    (4) Click the Descendants button
    (5) Ensure the Descendants radio button is selected (not Entire Line)
This will tag all the descendants of the chosen individual

You can now search for all individuals with the chosen tag number as follows:
    (a) On the search tab click the Find icon
    (b) set the search conditions to find individuals with that tag number
    (c) Ensure the "Clear the search List" option button is selected
    (d) Hit Create List to show all the names.  The number of individuals in the search list is shown at the top of the window.

    I hope this helps

  6. I did the same as Mike Edwards.  It gives you all of the descendants and their spouses.

Another way to do this would be to create a descendant report and then manually count each generation to get your numbers.  Using my husbands fourth great grandfather I have 4 pages of descendants.  It would take a little time but it is doable.

    Good luck!!

  7. Thank you all!  I got a reply from Legacy and it worked! This is it. And no spouses!

You can create a Descendant Focus Group to find the total number of descendants, but it doesn't indicate type of relationship and it includes spouses, so it's not totally accurate.

What I would do is set the relationships to the starting person (Tools > Set Relationships), then go to Search > Find > Detailed Search tab and use the search as shown in the attached screenshot.

In the Search List, click on Print and select the fields you want to include - don't forget "Relationship" .  Create the report in CSV, open that in your spreadsheet program and then you can sort by the Relationship column and find your count that way. If you're including dates and locations, I'd recommend changing the default date/place to separate fields for the date and the place. You can also have Given name and Surname fields separate if you wish.

The Index Report from the Name List or Search List is in the order that the list is in when you create the report - RIN, GIven or Surname.

For help with creating the report, click on the Help button when you're in that window.

I am so happy because I know I'm going to get asked. Now if I can just avoid the cousin who wants to know if their daughter is the 100th descendant I will be very happy!

  9. Kim Overholt Can you post the screen shot in a new post for us?

  10. Happy to but I don't see a way to attach it to this message. Do I start a new one?

  11. Yes - screen shots or other images only work in a new and/or original post. We would love to see what worked. thanks
