Using Legacy with my DNA test results - how?

' evening all.  I am working with a cousin to try to figure out how to log her Ancestry.com DNA test into my Legacy 8 program, but have hit a roadblock that I hope someone can help me with ...

The first thing it asks is what kind of test it was.  Well, we don't know.  We have searched the Ancestry site and have not been able to determine what kind of test it is (they only have 1 test now but they fail to say the name of it).  Does anyone out there know what the current DNA test is?  Or which of the 7 Ancestry test options in Legacy I should/could use to record the results of the current Ancestry DNA test?

Thanks,
Wade

  1. If the test was done recently Ancestry calls it there "Everything" test
but it is really an Autosomal test AtDNA

  2. Thank Jim.

Legacy does not seem to have an "Autosomal" or "AtDNA" option listed.  Do you know if any of the options listed will work?  Or should I send a feature ticket to them?

  3. You are touching the tip of the ice berg of DNA test results.
I have my results from my Big-Y test from family tree DNA, it has 3 million data points.  what do I do with a file with 3 million data points.  Further the new whole genome tests do out this year will have 3 billion data points!

  4. 3 million!!! Jimminy Cricket, that's a lot of data.

  6. Legacy currently does not have a way to record the autosomal DNA. I added an unlinked person, DNA Cousins, to add matches to until I figure out how they fit in my tree. I use events to track various things about them. You can only have 60 kids so if you use a DNA Cousins type person to keep people grouped together, you will need a bunch of them.

  7. Jim, unfortunately, I have no idea what any of that means.  This is my first experience with with DNA.

Kelly, I see that; I have sent a feature request to Legacy for it to be added.  And this is not some random match, I have not done DNA testing yet; I already know who and how this cousin fits into my tree (her mom is my Grandmother's half sister).  There is no question who she is or where the link is.  I just wanted to log her results in my tree so it would be linked to her rather than a random file floating about in my media folder.  And with more and more of my know family (and unknown family I imagine) doing DNA testing, as the family historian I figured I need to figure a way to record the test results before I get inundated with them.

  8. If you would like to know, I have a video of my presentation at RootsTech. Introduction to DNA for Genealogists

  9. Thanks Jim, that was quite something.  It also confirmed my suspicions about the Ancestry DNA test.

Now I just need to figure out how to keep track of all the tests my cousins are taking ...
