Uploading my Legacy Gedcom to Ancestry - issues.

I recently uploaded my Legacy data to an Ancestry tree, just to see what works, what doesn't, etc. I'm looking for ways to share all my hard work.

What didn't work was all my notes - general, research, event notes, etc. They do not appear with any of the records displayed in the Ancestry tree. I used the Ancestry upload feature within Legacy. I note that when it creates the file, there are no "customize" options that occur with normal Gedcom exports, but the resulting file was a normal Gedcom and all the Note codes with Note texts were there. They just do not get picked up by Ancestry when it translates the data. Has anyone figured a workaround?

(This is probably all explained somewhere important - but I haven't come across it yet. :) I realize Ancestry would rather you build your tree on their site, but I prefer Legacy...)

  1. Ancestry not picking up things is one reason that I don't use shared events. This still doesn't work 100%, but maybe better than what you are doing now. I have a notes event. I use "1 - NOTE" - the 1 in front will make it sort to the top of the list if there isn't a date. That way, I know I have notes and I can attach images and sources. Since Ancestry got rid of the old Ancestry, what is in the event notes does not carry thru but the description line and sources do. There is a spot on Ancestry in that event that you could copy & paste you event notes to have them show up if you wanted - I know I have too many to do that.

  2. Good point +Kelly Booth. I also am minimizing my use of shared events because, while they work very well within Legacy, other software hasn't fully adapted yet. That may change, but living that long might be an issue, for me anyway. Legacy is a database and it does that very well, but it needs to communicate effectively with other applications (and vice versa) to meet the needs of a varied customer base.
Thank you for your ideas re: notes. I can see how Ancestry might accept those. But I have a very extensive database and the idea of re-doing several thousand notes is not appealing. The workable solution might well be to look for other "sharing" alternatives than Ancestry. I don't like the idea that you cannot update your tree with an amended upload - seems you must delete your tree altogether and upload anew... lots of non-productive effort. I'm sure other options exist. But thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

  3. I know I have too many to copy also and wasn't even thinking about the new tree part. Take a look at RootsWeb. I put a tree there to make it easier to share with DNA matches and it is free. You can put events and the shared ones get picked up as well as event notes. Not sure about the general notes though. I didn't use the events in mine because I thought it looked a little clunky - the events were at the top and the family at the bottom. When you upload a new gedcom, you keep the same tree. I had to upload a bunch of gedcoms till I figured out the right settings to get it how I wanted but have notes so I know what to do next time.

  4. As a further follow-up, for any who might be following this thread, I received an e-mail response today from Ancestry basically saying that Legacy does not have a partnership with Ancestry. To get the results I am looking for, I should use Family Tree Maker or Roots Magic. One wonders why Legacy touts an Ancestry upload feature, but, oh well...

  5. Kelly Booth Thanks again for your comments. I've had a database on Rootsweb for many years now. I was just looking at Ancestry as an alternative, to maybe reach a wider or different audience. I also like the layout of its 'profile view' as a means of displaying data - an improvement on Rootsweb, IMO. But there are other options.
