What about unrelated people in our family files?

I'd like to add some people to my Legacy Family Tree who played important rolls in my dead rellies lives but were not related.  I'd just like to know if & how others here get around this please?

  1. Hi Michelle - I think there are a couple of ways depending on what you are looking for.  If you just want to add a non-relative's name to an event (like maybe pallbearers at a funeral) you can use the Share command for the event.  That will allow you to pick the person's name from a list or "just enter the name of a person".  If you select the later you can enter the person's name, role in the event, notes, and a few other options.

If you want to add more details to the non-relative I think that you can add the person as a child to anyone, go to the child's page, click on the Parent's List icon, then select "Unlink from Child".  This seems to create a standalone person without any family ties.  You can confirm by finding this standalone person will appear in the index tab.  I discovered this while trying to fix a mistake I made.  I tried it in the sample database and it seems to work fine.  I don't know if there are any implications to this or not but I don't think it should hurt anything.

Hope this helps and is not too confusing.

  2. The easiest way is to add an unlinked individual (the Add tab). I did this for friends of my parents that were like family. We were close growing up and the couple and their children were added and now their children. Although they are unlinked they are in the family tree and anytime they are listed as a witness or sponsor (did that plenty of times for baptisms and confirmations) they are right there in the program. Remember you can put anyone you want in your "family tree" it is all in how they connect.

  3. Hey Tessa - Thank!  I had never noticed the Add tab in the menu ribbon.  Right there towards the end ... "Add Unlinked".  Much better than my hack.  :-)
