Some of my ancestors in Ireland were McKeoughs. When they came to the U.S., they left off the "Mc" and became Keough. My great-grandfather married and had a number of children in Salem, MA. Their baptismal records (in the priest's very legible hand) show the surname Keough. Those records were turned over to the City Clerk to record the births. He seems to have though that the spelling was incorrect, because he changed it to Kehew, which was the surname of a prominent local businessman.
