I just imported my database into Legacy 8 Deluxe from PAF - some questions.

I just imported my database into Legacy 8 Deluxe from PAF. Years ago I traded databases with a very distant cousin and merged hers into mine. Legacy has flagged many errors in the data she provided. I would like to delete all the descendants she provided below where our lines meet. That goes back to the early 1800s. I'm really only interested in my family line and not very very distant cousins. Anyone have a suggest on a easy way to delete them?

  1. Did you source her people as coming from her? Because if you did you can go to that source under Master Sources, click Show List and tag them. Then you can un-tag the ones you want to keep and use Advanced Deleting to make everyone else disappear.

  2. JL Beeken, thanks for the response to my post. I merged her data before I started using PAF. Before that I used Family Origins for Windows and before that I used a DOS program. Since I didn't know anything about sourcing, it probably wasn't done unless the program did it automatically. When I open the Master Source List Windows, there are 143 entries. When I highlight her name and click on Show List, I only see her name and one other person. I guess I will have to laboriously start from the bottom and delete individuals one at a time and be careful not to leave any individuals without links. Thanks again.

  3. William Burlingame Well, another way to do it would be to go to where your lines meet, then do a Search for descendants of that person. That would be Under Search/Miscellaneous/Focus Group/Add an Individual and Descendants and then Descendants (not Entire Descendant Line) and then tag the list that comes up in the Name List. Then, to make sure you don't delete anyone you want to keep, click through them one at a time and un-tag anyone you want to keep. Then do another search on the tag number you've used and use Advanced Deleting under Options at the bottom of that window.

Obviously, I can't see the twists and turns of what you've got there but the above might give you an idea how to proceed.

  4. I have the family we have in common displayed, but I don't understand how to do anything with a group. If I just display Descendants, I don't see a way to tag names. I don't see Miscellaneous on the Ribbon under Search.

  5. William Burlingame I'm using Legacy 7.5. Regardless, under Search there are many options. Somewhere in there you need to find Focus Group. They may have moved it. If you can get that far I'll break it down again one step at a time.

  6. Focus Group is under View. I did that and clicked on Add Individual and Descendants. After I have a Focus Group window with that person listed and when click on OK it closes - now what? I don't see any way to tag something.

  7. William Burlingame After you click OK on those sub-windows and you're back at where you originally found Focus Group, down at the bottom of that window click on Create List and that should take you to the Name List.

  8. If I right click on the last person in her line with my surname, I can open an Advanced Tagging window with that person shown. I can then click on Descendants. It opens Descendant Options window with Descendants selected. And then I can click OK. I can on Search Lists and a window opens with a Miscellaneous tab available, but I don't know what to do on this window.

  9. OK, I did a Create List and now I have a list of Descendants.

  10. Down at the bottom, click on Options and then Advanced Tagging. That will bring up another window.

Where it says, Make changes on # and there's up and down arrows, pick a tag number that's not in use yet. Then click on Everyone in Search List.

  11. Thanks for your patience. I think I'll be able to proceed.
