Poll - How much time per week do you spend on DOING your genealogy?

Quick Question for All - HOW MUCH TIME PER WEEK (on average) DO YOU SPEND WORKING ON YOUR GENEALOGY (not classes, webinars, volunteer work, etc. - but doing research on your extended family, working with records & resources, working in Legacy, etc.).

And if you want to comment and explain what types of things you do and time, great - otherwise you can just take the poll. Thanks

  1. I average about 3 hours a day – some days more, some days less. Now that winter is on its way, I won’t be able to spend as much times outside so will do more.

I usually start my day reading the obituaries and checking all the names against my tree. I have a spreadsheet that I have everyone on with what I have for them and what I am missing. I add any new names that I added the day before. I have a large attach later folder so try to enter some things from there. After that, it is just where things lead. I saved an obit this morning I had to enter. One of the brothers no longer had his spouse listed so I looked to see if she died or they divorced. If I enter an obit that has other siblings/children/grandchildren that have died, I will look for those obits if I don’t have them.

I have been trying to go thru and look for anything I have missing for people – I don’t do that every day but try to spend at least one day a week doing that.

  4. As soon as the gardens are put to bed, I plan on delving into the world of DNA. I had my Uncle and myself tested so that will be a fun project. I also discovered records in the Netherlands and am translating them to English. They are wonderful sources.

  5. I am recently retired and have been spending my time going through folders of paper accumulated over 20 years. Discarding a lot. Scanning the important stuff. Putting the really important stuff in sleeves after scanning. I'm not researching much as I go. I have created a spreadsheet listing tasks, surnames involved, and approximate time to complete. That's the next step. So much paper from the early years when I wasn't sure if someone was in my lines or not and I kept those notes.

  6. I have been going through and adding all the census records that are available for each of my people. I am also adding new records as they come on line. Yesterday, I updated my locations and took out a lot of duplicates that I seem to collect when I pullin people from FamilySearch.

  7. I would like to say it's 20 minutes a day, but that would be a lie.

I follow 3 funeral homes for obits and it seems I'm related to practically everyone who has lived in Johnston Co., NC for the last 260 years.

I'm also cleaning up Research Notes, mostly census records. I'm down to the last 100.

For several years now, there's been one 'last' thing after another.
