Is there a way to find each shared event in my database?

How do I find each shared event? A report or some way to find these events to tag them? I've looked but am not seeing anything..... it's probably right in front of my nose, but ......

  1. Interesting question - because if it is right in front of us we both missed it. I took a look at Help and found nothing, Search does not give you the ability to look for a shared event and for role your choices don't bring up shared events. Has anyone tried this AND Kathy Cardoza what are you trying to do? Wondering if you are trying to find all your shared events or something else. Does anyone want to point Kathy and me to what we missed?

  2. Tessa, when I realized that shared events don't come across in a gedcom, I decided to eliminate them and use the event itself, copied over to each party involved. Shared events are a wonderful feature, but if you ever want to gedcom your data, it won't go with the gedcom. I have a website that uses TNG and I have to gedcom my file to it for display. So, I'm getting rid of the shared events and it would be very nice if there was some kind of report or a search feature for them.

  3. You know I was excited when I first heard about shared events during the long tease and roll-out of Version 8 (great idea - could use roles and would be so much easier for data entry). So I waited on the release (entering my census data for the head of household and did not copy to clipboard as I did in past but made a note that I needed to update my census entries for other family members when version 8 was released.

After playing with it a bit and asking some questions, I ran into the same problem you did - if you want to monitor the shared events (using search and/or options) or you want to share your work via a GEDCOM (and many genealogists use TNG to put their work online in a great and user-friendly format) - it does not appear to play well with others.

Have others had this issue? Are you using shared events in conjunction with a website or GEDCOM and does it work for you? If so, how? For those who work between programs, have you noticed a glitch in that your data does not transfer? Is this an issue for anyone in the LVUG Community? Does this issue arise with any other data entry - overwritten sentences, added events, etc.? Personally I have not given it much thought before since I was not ready to put my data online - but as that time gets closer, it gives you pause.

There has been lots of talk over the past few years about an improved GEDCOM standard and although I have only followed it a bit, I thought the various companies and interests were working on trying to speak the same language and making it easier to move your data from your program for other uses - anyone familiar with status? I was kind of hoping for an EU kind of approach - making it easier to work together over the programs. Thoughts?
