Backups missing - what happened?
A first for me. Tried to open my Legacy today and asked if I had code, and if starting with GEDCOM etc! I had lost everything. I do backup every time I close Legacy and all my backed up trees are on a flash drive. All the back-ups on my hard drive are gone. I lost all my colors and all my settings, so will have to try to do all that. I might drop potential problems as that will take hours and all the important ones were fixed.
Leslie Wright Bagwell . How concerning. Oh, yikes.
ReplyDeleteI think before I moved forward I would contact Legacy support. Like NOW.
And, Forgive me, as I have only had a little coffee - - your tree is not on the flash drive?? You cannot use that to restore??
Good luck!
I did restore, and will work on restoring the rest of my trees this afternoon. Just so time-consuming to reset all the colors and settings. I have a new laptop, so maybe I should just put it all on the new one. I just opened 7.5 and it is all there, only lost version 8, and did get it unlocked. I'll email Legacy when I get home this afternoon!
ReplyDeleteLeslie Wright Bagwell Did you check the location on your computer where you stored your Legacy files? It sounds like they were deleted or maybe moved since the program couldn't find them.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me glad that I have Mozy backups. I do back up on an external drive but I also have Mozy and it has saved me more than once when I had a new computer that had two hard drive crashes in 6 months. It was a lifesaver.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds extreme. How does an entire program and all backups just disappear?
ReplyDeleteIn my backups that I do daily using Syncback, I include the Legacy installation folder (I'm still using v.7) not just the zip backups. That folder is EVERYTHING meaning also the USR files that would include all settings. Just in case.
I know it's too late for you now. Just mentioning it for the future.
This happened to a fried of mine. It was caused by a conflict between legacy 7.5 and legacy 8 once she removed legacy 7 it didn't happen any more. Make sure you copy all your legacy 7 files before you remove the program though.

ReplyDeleteInteresting comment Terry Stone and some good advice from others. However a concern I have is that we have been told it is fine to have version 7.5 and version 8.0 on our computers because files stored in different places so no conflict. Did you change locations for your files Leslie Wright Bagwell? If not, is this an issue for Legacy (and perhaps a serious one). I have both versions on my computer as not totally there yet with version 8.0. Are any others in our LVUG Community having this problem?
ReplyDeleteI have both versions of Legacy on both of my computers and all my files are in the same folder since I store mine in Dropbox instead of the default Legacy folder. My Legacy 8 file has a slightly different name so that I know the difference if I'm looking at the files in the folder.
ReplyDeleteGranted I haven't done much work in Legacy in the past few months, but I can't imagine how files would be deleted because of having both versions on a computer. Note that Leslie Wright Bagwell did not say which version of Legacy she's using or even if she has both versions.
I have both versions of three of my computers- two laptops and one desktop. Haven't had any problems. I have kept the default storage locations for my files.
ReplyDeleteOK everyone. I have my answer. It was user error. I didn't realize that Legacy 8 is in your document file on Windows 7 (maybe all windows) I moved everything from my documents to an external hard drive. I have a new laptop and when I get it all loaded I will move the documents onto it. Too late to save my settings though. Legacy Tech told me I should have copied my files to the external hard drive, not moved them.
ReplyDeleteMy Legacy 7.5 is perfectly fine, it is stored on C. drive, so it is all there. But I had not used it at all since I started using 8.
Now I will wait until I get my new laptop going before changing the settings!
Thanks everyone for the help and support!
All good - often I have user error!
