Question about the Families app.

I was looking at the Families app in the Apple store. It doesn't get very good reviews, especially for Legacy 8. Can anyone in this community give me a review? Is it worth the $15? I use the Ancestry App, but would like to have my Legacy family tree information with me since that's my main program.

  1. Karin Coppernoll I have the Android version and really like it.  You can edit the database in the app, but I tend to just use it for reference.  It comes in very handy when you are traveling and I like always having access to my files.  I sync my attached docs also, so I really like that ability too.

  2. Monique Riley do you need to sync via computer or can you do it wirelessly?

  3. I sync with my computer. Couldn't get mine to do it wirelessly, but they say it is possible, so I don't know. I, like Carol Stevens, don't like to get into the problem of inputting on different devices. Syncing was a bit of a trick. I am behind in doing it, but it serves the purpose for me.

  4. Thank you both. I wanted to try the app but all the negative reviews stopped me. If the app is as good as you say, I think everyone needs to go write a good review. The developer might even refine it if enough people purchase it.

  5. I've used it for several years but have not updated from a Legacy 8 db yet. I have done the wireless transfer with Legacy 7.5.  You do have to run the program on your computer to create the file for Families (it doesn't read the Legacy file directly so it must be converted to the Families format). Part of that process has the option for a wireless transfer of the file to your mobile device.

  6. BTW, I've never updated information in the app because I don't trust that process to work perfectly. It very well may but it's not worth it to take that chance to me. I use the app to have access to my information, and that is enough for me. I rarely, if ever, updated my database while in a research facility anyway even if I had the laptop.

  7. Agree Linda McCauley .  If I am researching, I rarely have time to update the data base.  ;-)

  8. Karin Coppernoll there is at least one webinar at the Family Tree Webinars website about the Families app. It really helped me.

  9. Same as those before me, I won't add data on the iPad, just on the laptop. I know I'll forget to sync one way and wipe out any new data I've entered. The only issue I have with Families, is the amount of storage the documents uses and they were fiddly to find on each persons file when I was at a library and wanted to view them quickly. That was just me, I found it quicker to have the ones I needed in the photos app. I've installed Roots Magic and it had a much cleaner look, but I'm too far into Legacy on my laptop to change. I need to spend time researching and entering data, not swapping out to different software.

  10. I find that the Families app does not take up that much room, even with over 9000 images it takes less than 2 gigs on my iToys.  The iPad has 64 Gigs, so, it does not matter, but, even on the iPhone, I am good to go with storage.

I attach 95% of my images to the general multimedia events tab.  I rarely attach an image TO an event, such as death cert to death event.  I got started building a chronological story of our lives from birth to death in the multimedia area and I find that still suits me just fine.

Families can scroll through those images much faster than I can view them in Legacy.  :-)

  11. Thanks everyone. And I totally agree about only adding data in one device. I only add my data from my computer. The app will only be to carry the information with me in a portable form when I don't have my computer.  Sounds like I will look for the webinar.
