Using Ancestry with Legacy - a question.

First kuddos to those of you who participate in this community on  a regular basis.  I have learned much more with you than I would have in decades without this community.  I have two questions for you all.

Has LVUG taken a hiatus for the summer?  And 2nd Do you have specific suggestions about using Legacy with ancestry?  The member trees on ancestry do not have many of the features in Legacy that I won't live without now.

Sourcing things from ancestry hints to detailed citation is so easy.  Can sourcing from ancestry docs to legacy be described in a step by step way for me to follow?  Thanks in advance.  Post too long.

  1. Hi Michele Ryals

The majority of the information in my Legacy database is from ancestry.com.  Once I find the document that needs to be added to Legacy I do the following :

    1. Download the image to my computer
    2. Add a new Event/Fact to add a transcript of the information to and any relevant notes
    3. Attach the image to the Event/Fact
    4. Add the source information
    5. Share the Event/Fact with others mentioned in the document

Also, if you go to my blog at http://shannonmthomas.blogspot.com/ you will find a lot of posts about adding information to Legacy and they contain screen shots of my Legacy database.

  2. Our LVUG Community is active with posts and Tuesday's Tips. I have had some scheduling conflicts with hangouts but we are getting back on track with that (thanks for asking). We will be changing up this feature a bit and more on that in July. Glad you are learning and enjoying the group. We work best by sharing not only our questions (and thanks to all for jumping in with answers) but also sharing tips as we discover new ways to work with Legacy. This is a user-to-user group so all are encouraged to interact here in the LVUG Community.

As far as Legacy with Ancestry - I keep my data in Legacy, that is where I enter information, record my sources, etc. I don't know that I would ever rely on an online site to maintain my data or use their version of source citations. But that might just be because I am a bit controlling and while I might upload a portion of a tree (cousin bait) I cut and paste and then modify in my Legacy software. What do others do? Everybody SHARE (please)!

  3. I began with Ancestry and downloaded the tree data to Legacy, so I am in the process of reviewing to ensure everything transferred correctly. First thing I did was print off a Legacy error report and am going through that to make sure I don't miss anyone. I still add new people to Ancestry first, then back up to Legacy. Wish I could add to Legacy first, but old ways die hard and I value the historic documents I can add through Ancestry so easily. Your thoughts are appreciated!

  4. Control freak too, Tessa Keough .  My data base is ON my computer, with Legacy.

IF I were to put a tree online, I would do so from Legacy.

All research I find, no matter WHERE I find it, A dot com, Family Search, other online data bases, GENWEB sites, libraries, archives, etc., it is all put on my computer.

  5. OK thanks for the comments.  I am trying to learn [a constant process for me] that there is no one and only correct way to do Family History.  It is also a pursuit that evolves and will likely never be finished.  Thanks.  I now have some of my hope back.

  6. I manage my data using both Legacy and Clooz. My main database is Legacy and has been so since sometime in the mid-90s. Clooz helps me to organize documents and to analyse material from those docs without cluttering my Legacy database with unrelated names, families, etc. But I also upload my Legacy data every few months or so to Rootsweb, via Gedcom, where it is free for others to see, share or maybe provide a helping hand for their own research.

  7. Michele Ryals - there are some easier or best practices ways to do things, but the most important thing is to set up a system that you will actually do. We have to not be afraid to try something and tweak it so it works for us.

Glad you are here and please take advantage of any of our past Tuesday's Tips - we had a month's worth of tips in October 2013 and 2014 for Family History Month and a couple of us used the 2015 April A-Z challenge (26 blog posts) to write about using Legacy. If you click on the topic Tuesday's Tips - all those posts will show up. Also if there is something in particular, you can try the search box (tagging, searches, RINs come to mind). We are all finding our way.

Be sure to check out Shannon Thomas posts during that series she had some great examples of how she does things in Legacy. Mine were posted at my blog (The Keough Corner) and some were re-posted here. Whatever you do, have fun with it (that is the key to enjoying your family history).

  8. I prefer to maintain all info on one site. I found that I would update things on ancestry and then move to another task without updating my computer resulting in inaccurate info.

For me, everything goes on my computer. Most things go into Legacy AND into Evernote with backups to a couple of different places.
