Tuesday's Tip - 3 quick tips today in the LVUG Community!

(1) you might be going away for the holiday - that could be July 1st for Canada Day or July 4th for USA Independence Day . If so be sure to back up your Legacy data before you leave town (or just back it up no matter what!). And this means both your family files and media as well as your user files. Save yourself the aggravation and back up. (2) if you are new to our LVUG Community -* welcome*! Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your use of Legacy (which version, how long, and any questions, or tips and suggestions). We love questions or slight frustrations - often they are the subject of future Tuesday's Tips! Thanks (3) are you planning your summer continuing education ? Be sure to check out the_ Legacy Webinar series_ and the GeneaWebinars calendar. Be thoughtful and don't take on too much, but there must be something you want to learn more about. Why not check them out. Thanks to Pat Richley-Erickson aka DearMYRTLE for keeping the calendar up! ...

How do I input information from newspaper articles?

I have numerous years of newspapers from Marshall County Kansas.  I have inputted the year 1948 two different ways.  1. Newspaper Article as the event. Date 22 April 1948 (date of newspaper) and place - Wetmore, Nemaha, Kansas. Leaving the description blank and putting this Mr. and Mrs. Fred Claycamp were in Wetmore Sunday visiting at the home of his brother, George Claycamp. in the notes section. 2. visit as the event Date 22 April 1948 and place - Wetmore, Nemaha, Kansas. Leaving the description blank and putting this Mr. and Mrs. Fred Claycamp were in Wetmore Sunday visiting at the home of his brother, George Claycamp. in the notes section. I just learned I need to put the sentence in the description so it will show up in the family report.   As I start a new year, I am trying to figure out if the event should be newspaper article or what the event was - dinner, visit, PTA meeting.   The source is the newspaper date, volume, page and...

Importing citations into Legacy - how?

Can I import a list of citations/repository from program like EndNote into Legacy 8?

How to attach a scanned photo of birth certificate?

I just added a Birth Certificate and set up a new master source for it.  Question - should I attach a scanned photo of the BC to the source record or detail record?

Tuesday's Tip - How to find a married woman in your Legacy family.

Tuesday's Tip - The question came up in a couple of places about how to find a married woman in your Legacy family file when you don't know her maiden surname. We show you three ways of getting to the family file,  as well as a little bookmark bonus at the end of the video. If you have another way, why not share it below in the comments section. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUTdhKsMFXY

New to LVUG community.

Hi from Cathy Claycamp.  I'm a "South Jersey Girl" at heart even though my husband and I live in western North Carolina now. I started genealogy many years ago as a teen.  I was able to trace my Gerlach line to Hans Gerlach born about 1569 probably in Mörfelden. Germany. He married Maria Jung.  They raised their family in Raunheim, Germany (yes I know it wasn't Germany at that time). My great great grandfather, David Friedrich came to New Jersey about 1856 from Lauffen am Neckar.  Other surnames I'm researching: Claycamp, Farsing,  Magin, Mersinger, Reader, Shoemaker, Singleton. I use Legacy deluxe edition.  My goal for this year is to learn how to use the program better.  I attended Tessa's webinar 10 Tips for Using Legacy with Specialized Studies (which was excellent) and realized I should join this community as it will be a great way to achieve my goal. It will be funny getting to know you.

Using Ancestry with Legacy - a question.

First kuddos to those of you who participate in this community on  a regular basis.  I have learned much more with you than I would have in decades without this community.  I have two questions for you all. Has LVUG taken a hiatus for the summer?  And 2nd Do you have specific suggestions about using Legacy with ancestry?  The member trees on ancestry do not have many of the features in Legacy that I won't live without now. Sourcing things from ancestry hints to detailed citation is so easy.  Can sourcing from ancestry docs to legacy be described in a step by step way for me to follow?  Thanks in advance.  Post too long.

Using Function Keys F4 & F5 in Legacy.

Following on from +Mike Edwards post re Using Function Keys F4 & F5 to have your notes window & sources window open at the same time... this is what I get when I press the F4 after opening the 'Notes' section.  Anyone got any suggestions please?

How do I reuse RINS?

I am using Legacy 8.0 Standard.  I would like to reuse the RINs that have become vacant because I deleted or merged individuals.  I have followed the Help instructions but nothing happens.  There is no indication but is this a function of the deluxe version?

New to LVUG community.

My name is Lynne Dick and I live in British Columbia, Canada. I have been researching my family tree for many years. I have used PAF, Family Tree Maker and switched to Legacy Deluxe 2 years ago. I am still learning how to use all the features available on Legacy. I alos enjoy the webinars that Legacy offers. Right now I am trying learn more about Legacy reports and how to make them attractive and interesting to family and friends.

Tuesday's Tip - 10 Tips for Using Legacy with specialized studies.

Because I put lots of work into it and I think these tips are useful whether you are working on your own family history or any type of specialized study, why not check out the Legacy webinar from last Friday - 10 Tips for Using Legacy with Specialized Studies . Then comment below which tip(s) were new to you or if you think I didn't include a really important one! Also on behalf of our LVUG Community welcome to our newest members - 20 of you have joined since last Friday . If you are new here, please introduce yourself (use the Getting to Know You topic) and why not add an avatar - so we can put a face or an initial or perhaps some creative artwork with a name. Take a few moments to read the Guidelines (just click on that topic) and the About section (over on the right). Thanks so much for joining and we look forward to seeing your tips, suggestions and questions on Legacy .

Question about ancestor report.

I am trying to produce an ancestor report for a friend. Does anyone know how to omit the alternative birth & death, etc. information from the report? I don't want  to delete the info from the database but I want to make the report interesting and concise.

Using Function Keys F4 & F5 with your notes and sources.

Image
Using Function Keys F4 & F5 to have your notes window & sources window open at the same time... I just stumbled on a shortcut that allows me to have my notes AND sources window open at the same time when editing an individual.  Here's how it works...and it only works in this order.. (1) Click on Notes (or press F5) to open the individual's notes window (2) Press F4 to open the sources window at the same time. This allows you to edit, copy etc the sources.  You then need to close the Sources window before you can use the Notes window again. I found this useful when reviewing my "Proof" notes that I record to explain why I believe a certain fact.  I can flick between my notes and sources quickly and still have the main Family screen visible to see the key relationships.  Hope this helps someone. Mike

Is there a way to change the default data path in Legacy?

Image
I am using Legacy version 8.0.0.473. I have moved my data files to C:\Legacy\Data\family name\family.fdb like the image shown below.  I maintain over 30 different family/name data folders. Not all of them have legacy 'family.fdb' files. I have problems with the data being in 'My Documents' such as C:\users\owner\MyDocuments\Legacy Family Tree\family name\family.fdb. I do this because I use the same files and data to create web site updates. The files must be at root: such as C:\Legacy for software and web sites to operated properly with a relative path.  Otherwise I have to create two directory paths and maintain them both in sync. That's a problem.  So, is there a way to change the default data path to one of my choosing?

How do I print To-Do items for a tagged group?

Image
How do I print To-Do items which are for a group of tagged individuals but only for a specific repository? When I go to the Record Selection tab of the To-Do report it seems that I can only choose to print all items for individuals with a tag number OR all individuals for a specific repository.  Have I understood this correctly? If this is correct, does anyone have a neat workaround?  Thanks

Legacy error message - windows printer not defined?

Has anyone recently seen the Legacy error message "no reports can be printed until a windows printer is defined" ? What's up with that? I have a couple of printers defined and can print from other apps, just not Legacy. I saw some complaints from 2009 on the forum but nothing more recent and nothing very helpful.

Reports in Legacy - some questions.

I am rather new with Legacy. I want to get reports from Legacy that will help me get further detail from family members - so I want to print out a descendant chart showing every bit of detail I have of each person. So I will send Sally such a chart of all the descendants of her grandfather and see will see what I have of her parents and their siblings and of her and her siblings and of her kids. Is there a report like that?

How do others enter census data?

I have seen on webinars (and I can't remember who) that people type all the information that is contained in a census.  Is there a way to copy/paste this information or must it be keystroked in?  and once  you have it typed where do you store it -- in notes for head of household?  add to each person mentioned notes? Or am I making work for myself that I don't need?

Imported tree from FamilyTreeMaker - master source list is a mess.

I imported my tree from Family tree maker and it has my master source list all messed up is there a why to delete all the master sources and reenter them using the master source writer

Questions about my toolbar in Legacy.

How do I get the My Toolbar to stay displayed . On my main machine every time I reboot it comes back minimized. However on my laptop it stays maximized on reboot. I assume there is an option to control this but I can't find it. Any assistance gladly received.

Tuesday's Tip - Playing around with Legacy features.

I have been away so this week's Tuesday's Tip is a bit of catch-up, is posted at my blog (since it was longer), and is linked here. A reminder that Legacy has two webinars this week (Wednesday and Friday). More about them in the post but I will be joining the Legacy Family Tree Panel on Friday as we play around with some Legacy features (and show how they are used with your family file as well as specialized studies aka projects ). I plan to ask Geoff and team about the charting question Judy Lofthouse asked. If you have any questions, post them and we will try to get to them on Friday. It should be interesting. http://keoughcorner.blogspot.com/2015/06/as-summer-approaches-some-genealogy.html

I question about charts in Legacy.

I've been asked a question about charts. A friend wants an ancestor chart that includes the siblings of the ancestors but not spouses or children of the siblings. I have created a family file that includes the required people but now want to make a chart that includes all. Any one got any ideas please? All I seem to be able to do is an ancestor chart with none of the siblings. I am using Legacy 8.0.0.499

Legacy is frozen - how to fix?

I have a problem.  When I open the Legacy Program and click on something it just dings and nothing happens, it's frozen. Have any of you had this problem before or know how I can fix it?  I have the lastest update.
