Has anyone linked to their documents/images from Legacy to Google Drive?

Has anyone linked to their documents/images from Legacy to Google Drive and if in the event of needing a new computer, will it link all again. I have a few images in the Legacy media folder, but for other documents, birth, census etc, I would like to leave them where they are, but worry about doing too many and the link getting broken. Thanks.

  1. I like to have all my media files on my computer and the same drive as Legacy and in folders under the legacy folder. I place the pictures in a picture folder, Documents in a document folder etc. There is work in doing this I know.
Re-linking in case of broken links can be carried out with Legacy automatically..
Backing up in a different place is very important of course.
Having files in other places would work but it does make it much more complicated and much more likely to fail.

  2. Jenny MacKay My Genealogy folder (where I keep most of my genealogy related stuff) is in OneDrive, which is like Google Drive or Dropbox, and Legacy is linked to them.  When I had to reinstall Legacy on my desktop a few weeks ago all I had to do was run the media relinker from Legacy and it found my Genealogy folder and relinked all of my media.  Also, my Legacy program files are in Dropbox which allows me to use Legacy on my Laptop and have it look the same as when I am on my computer.  I make sure Legacy and my Genealogy folder is closed and synced and then I can use Legacy on my laptop.  My comupter is automatically backed up with Crash Plan which includes my OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox folders.

  3. Very timely question (for me) Jenny MacKay  as I am currently in the process of copying all my family history files to Google Drive.  Looks like it's going to take a week or more for this to happen as they are uploading VERY slowly.  A VERY important lesson I have learned the hard way recently is to perform a 'Media Relinker' before every Legacy shut down and fix any problems before backing up & shutting down.

  4. Thanks everyone. I'm doing my Do/Go-Over and scanning, renaming, researching more as I go, all my family history files. They are in surname folders in Google Drive. I just didn't want to copy or move them to the Legacy folder and have double of the information. Thanks Shannon Thomas, I feel better knowing you successfully re linked everything. Just so long as I don't rename or move files that are already linked. At the movement I'm only backing up my legacy file to Dropbox as I only have one laptop and I view my files on my iPad with Families. I try not to edit with that. Know I can, but just prefer to do all my editing & adding on one device. :-)

  5. Jenny MacKay I too use the Families app on my iPad.  I do not edit from there.  Almost all of my data entry is done on my desktop computer; I have done some on my laptop but I find it hard to do with only one screen.  I use two screens with my desktop and thinking about a third...lol

  6. Neil Errey  I don't keep my media inside of my Legacy folder because I have had to uninstall Legacy and reinstall it a few times because of problems with updates and after the uninstall I had to delete the Legacy folder for it to work again.  I'm afraid I would probably forget to move my media folder from the Legacy folder first.

  7. Shannon Thomas I too work with 2 screens. Laptop as the main screen/keyboard and a bigger screen for viewing things off to the side, which sometimes I find I type into as well, subsequently, a stiff neck ensures! Neil Errey My last Legacy update (8) had the files in a different location in Documents. It took me a while to work out what happened, I didn't have much linked there, but I'm working on doing that better now.

  8. Yes Jenny MacKay  I also use the two screen and have refined the height of the small screen to help prevent the stiff neck, but I do know what you mean. I use a quite large screen is the keyboard screen with a full size keyboard.
The Legacy 8 upgrade rearranging where it is located has caused me some heartache also. Most upgrades of software seem to be 2 steps forward and one backwards, not sure why they do that.
Thanks for you comments - software upgrades seems to be an ongoing wrestle but I do like Legacy.

  9. Excellent discussion - I think we should have Shannon Thomas and anyone else who would care to share - walk us through their filing system (I especially like that it is in OneDrive) in the cloud. Shannon Thomas let's see if we can work this out for a future LVUG monthly hangout. Impressed to read how many of us incorporate the cloud with your documents. Well done!

  10. Shannon Thomas I tried installing/moving my Legacy files to Dropbox, and everything worked fine except that the dictionary files remained on my hard drive no matter how many times I installed Legacy to Dropbox.  Have you experienced this?

    ReplyDelete
  11. No I have not Angela Jenkins.  All of my files are in dropbox and everything works fine.  I have even had to uninstall and reinstall with no problems.

  12. Tessa Keough that sounds like an excellent plan!

  13. I'd like to be able to do some linking with Dropbox but I've got a dropbox problem. My original dropbox is identified with an email that's not functioning anymore and I can't get the files moved to a new dropbox because the old one won't accept the password I had for it. I can't change that because the email to change it will go to the old  email which I can't access. It's a conundrum.

  14. Tessa Keough and +Shannon Thomas - That would be fantastic if you could organise a hangout and/or video of how to load Legacy into a cloud storage system.  Count me in please?

  15. Lynda Avery, can you still get into Dropbox with your old email address and password? You should then be able to change the email address in the account settings. People change emails addresses all the time, so I'm sure it is possible. I'm on the iPad just now, but will have a look when I'm online later. Tessa Keough, I'm getting more into cloud storage, but resist changing over completely. To do, or not to do. Mine are financial reasons, so I worry that when I'm gone, do my family keep these subscriptions going just to keep my information live & will they as it will cost them $ to keep the storage. I do both at the moment, cloud and EHD, but want to leave some sort of a paper trail so my family know how to access my files.

  16. Jenny MacKay  - interesting comment. We tend to think about the "here and now" without thinking about the future. If you keep your information in the cloud - one concern might be what happens to it once you are gone (in the Guild of One-Name Studies they refer to this issue as future-proofing your study/project).

Has anyone thought about setting aside funds to pay to continue a website or subscription? How about funds to turn over their work to a local genealogical association? This might be a reason to make sure your work is maintained at something like FamilySearch's FamilyTree? I have NOT done anything about my work yet (but should). What are any of our LVUG Community members doing about this issue? Another good topic for a hangout!

  17. I don't intend going anywhere anytime soon, but I just think of all the work I've done over the last 30 years and now scanning as much as I can to have it digitised. That was part of the reason for my original query, how much do I link to Legacy as these documents are on Google Drive and would it stay linked, (seems as though it should) if the need arose. and I wonder how long that info would stay on GD. Sorry, I know I'm putting more into this than is probably needed at this stage, but!!? :-)

  18. No worries Jenny MacKay and since we never know what might happen to us - it is something we need to give some thought to. No one would like to see all their hard work thrown away or that family members could not get to the programs or subscriptions we use.

  19. Jenny, I can get into the dropbox but it won't let me change the email address without first putting in my password and it won't accept the password I have recorded. I use Last Pass and that is why I can get into the account but then when I try to put in what I think is the correct password in settings, it rejects it.

  20. Ok, got it. Hopefully you can email their support services to help you access the account. Lynda Avery

  21. I love the idea of a hangout teaching about using Legacy with Dropbox and OneDrive. Shannon Thomas and Tessa Keough I realized I need to do a better job with my digital files and cloud storage is one way to tackle that.

  22. Linda Avery , I had some issues a while back with LastPass,  and one specific web site that I had more than one user ID (you know, Admin and personal).  SOOOO, I deleted that specific web site from LastPass.  Cleaned old browser histories.  Told Chrome to ignore stuff, don't remember exactly what, but, did something there.  LOL

And, no longer have issues with that website.  NOT sure that would work with Dropbox, but you could try it.  And/or, contact support and ask for help.

As far as the part of this discussion and storing documents and such online, and subscriptions.  I no longer store if I have to pay.  I had a domain for my blog, and then, I had trouble trying to pay the lousy $10.00 a year to keep the name.  I could not access, no passwords that I could come up with worked.  There was no way to contact them online.  A nightmare for me.  I finally managed to copy out all of the blog into a new blog URL.  I went live with that for a while until I figured out how to tell Blogger I was changing back to the generic URL.  That actually worked and after much angst, I was able to continue there and put the backup plan in the archives.  Now, I have nothing I have to pay for and until Blogger tanks, my work will remain on the WWW.

I am not sure that the majority of my readers and fans care one little bit about the URL.  They just want to read when I post.  Many readers these days don't see all the work and fancy smancy stuff on my web version of the blog, because they read from devices and readers that do not show them all the stuff down the "right" column, or in the headers or footers.  I have decided to go for keeping it the same, I make very few changes, I spend my time (when I have time) writing and posting.  Why spend time on something that many do not even see??

I do the same with storage.  If it is not free, I am not going to go there.  I have VERY limited bandwidth and could not afford to get my massive amounts of data online anyway, and if it is not accessible to my heirs, or anyone else, what good is it??

So, I depend on external hard drives for backups.  One full data backup on the 1st and another full data backup on the 15th and a daily/writeover backup on a 3rd external that I carry with me everywhere, I go shopping, the external goes with me.  It is about the size of a cell phone, I have a case for it, and it goes in my backpack.

    And, I pray!  LOL

Have a great day everyone.  Sorry for the verbose post, those of you that know me, know that is nothing unusual.

  23. Not verbose at all Carol Stevens. We have to think long and hard about the services and resources we use. Sometimes it is quite worthwhile to pay and sometimes you get better service from open/free sources. We always need to keep in mind customer service - if you can't easily find the site, frequently asked questions, payment options and contact - run, don't walk away from that site. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  24. And, as ALWAYS, your mileage may vary!  LOL

I know that frequently my choices are not workable or desired by others. We all need to look at all the alternatives.  Know and contemplate where we are in our research, our resources, and how we feel about "boundaries" that the wondrous world of internet and WWW put before us.  Carefully choose, but, be aware (or try to be) of what your decisions mean.

And, yes, I have what I consider to be nightmare stories about not knowing what those choices mean.  The blog URL domain being one of them.  LOL

    Great discussion, thanks all!

  25. I finally got my Dropbox account working so now I might think about linking some of my data there, but after the struggle I had with it, it will take some thinking before I do that.

  26. Shannon Thomas I would really love to set Legacy up on Google Drive meaning the program, documents, photos - the whole shebang but I'm a little terrified to say the very least.  I'm wondering if it would be possible for you to do a video to show us how to set it up & transfer all the files over please?  I'm one of those people who has to see something happening instead of reading it in order to learn.  I hope this is possible & not too much trouble.

  27. Tessa Keough this would make a great hangout.  Easier than me doing a video...lol

  28. Shannon Thomas Tessa Keough I would be very grateful as I am sure many others would be too if this could be arranged.  Thank you.
