Marriages in the wrong order - how to fix my reports.

Image
Here's an example of the marriages in the wrong order on Reports -> Family Group -> Descendant.  This lady was married 4 times. The report shows her marriages in this order: 1951, 1959, 1944, 1936.  How do I get the report to show them in chronological order?  This problem occurs for many but not all people with multiple marriages.

Working with reports - how to fix marriages?

How do I get marriages to display in the right order on a Descendant report in Legacy 8 Deluxe?  I chose Reports->Family Group->Descendant.  For some people, the 2nd wife displays first.  It's not using the marriage date.  Then I thought it reported the wife with the lower RIN first or the lower MRIN first, but that's not it either.  Any ideas?

Hi I'm new to this group.

Just learned about it yesterday from Tessa Keough's webinar.  I'm Barbara from Raleigh, N.C.  I have Legacy 8 Deluxe.  I've been using Legacy about 5 years and I love the SourceWriter.

New to LVUG community.

I am new and researching Valentine Huffman and James Meadows ancestors from Rockingham County, Virginia. This is my dad's side of the family and I know they both served in the Revolutionary War and trying to gather documents and information for my Daughters of American Revolution application. Thank you.

Just watched Tessa on Legacy webinar.

Loved the info!  I'm new to Legacy 8 (just switched after doing the Genealogy do over--Hey Thomas MacEntee).

A bonus webinar at Legacy.

Is anyone else unable to watch the bonus webinar?

Question about the date format in Legacy.

Hi, I'm asking this on obehalf of a friend who asked me ... and I haven't been able to help them, so hopefully someone here can. They have Legacy 8 and are in Australia, so have their date format set to DD-MMM-YYYY in the program. However when they go to print out a chart for US relatives, they want to change the date US format (MMM-DD-YYYY). I suggested changing going to Options, and changing it in the program, but that didn't seem to work. But also within the Help in Legacy Charting is says that the “Charting Options” should have a tab called “Date Options”,  but it’s NOT THERE . And as yet I haven't found any other possible way to change the date format. Anyone else come across this? Or know how to get the desired result?

Hi, I am researching Blankenlöch, Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany; Hauer and Cammerer surnames.

Interesting webinar.

I recently purchased Legacy, but it has so much to it that it's overwhelmed.  Doubt that I have the time to use it like I should.

Just joined after Tessa's Legacy Webinar.

Hello. I'm based in the UK and use Legacy 8.  I'm using this in the Genealogy Go-Over as well, so looking to learn new tips and tricks as well as good practice!

Thanks Tessa for another great presentation!

Thanks Tessa for another great presentation!  I bought Legacy recently as part of the Genealogy Do-Over and wanted to try something besides FTM.  Also will sign up for Legacy Webinars.  I'm registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies for my surname Carragher and variants.   http://carragherfamily.org

Ann from mid-Iowa, USA.  I'm using Legacy 8 and starting a one name study for IGOE and variants.  Just went to the Legacy webinar with Tessa Keogh about special studies and can hardly wait to use Legacy with my one name study!   Hooray!

What is your suggested method of recording slave ownership in Legacy?

What is your suggested method of recording slave ownership in Legacy. Yes, that curious institution was/is despicable, but it is also a part of history.

Move the media folder to another drive without losing links - how?

Is there a way to move the media folder to another drive without losing the links to the attached individuals?  I'm running out of room on the solid state boot drive.

Any limits on number of people in family file?

What is the maximum number of people that can be put into one family file?

Articles on Clooz improvement to existing Legacy data interface.

Dick Eastman reported our latest Clooz improvement to the existing Legacy data transfer interface.  It now requires no manual input in Legacy to transfer each document that has been analyzed in Clooz over into all of the proper categories in your Legacy file.  For newly worked families, the family structure can be designated in the transfer screens and appears in proper structure in Legacy. http://blog.eogn.com/2015/04/18/updated-clooz-software-now-interfaces-with-legacy-family-tree/ http://blog.eogn.com/2015/04/18/updated-clooz-software-now-interfaces-with-legacy-family-tree

How do you handle entering DNA matches that aren't yet clarified?

I'm thinking of either putting the lines into my existing family file and marking everyone as Invisible so they don't show up when I generate charts for my website. Or starting another family file and marking each person (in their User ID possibly?) which person they came from.

For this week's Tuesday's Tip - Q is for Quality.

For this week's Tueday's Tip I'm sharing my #AtoZChallenge  post from yesterday - Q is for Quality . So many times we are in such a rush to add those family members that we forget (or put off) doing the more tedious (but very important) work of checking dates, locations, sources, etc. I am finding lots of gaps while working on this April blogging challenge (adding to-dos to my list every day). It is all about quality - and as Ford used to advertise - quality is job 1 . So I aim high and keep improving the quality of my work. How are your projects going? Which Legacy features do you use to help you achieve a quality product? http://keoughcorner.blogspot.com/2015/04/q-is-for-quality.html

In March I asked about naming Master Sources.

I have a fairly good idea what I want to do but realized that changing all to my new convention is daunting but doable as I don't have that many. The hold up are the obituaries which I originally named "Obit - name of person, abbreviated newspaper name, date published". There are 58 and all but three are the same newspaper. I am determined to change them to something like, Newspaper - Stevens Point Daily Journal, Stevens Point, WI or something similar. If I make that that change and select update all sources I will lose the date for each person and will have to go back into each record and add the date, correct? Is there a better way?

It's Sunday - Play catch up, get out and about, or read AtoZChallenge posts.

Image
It's Sunday - the day some of us play catch up, others are out and about (and today is glorious in the Northwest), still others relax and do a bit of reading. If you want to check out what others have been writing in the #AtoZChallenge (and there is lots of good stuff out there) why not check out their posts - either by going to their blogs or by clicking on their Google+ persona (the avatar there on the left - you will be directed to their profile which has an about section as well as a posts section . Click on posts and check out what they have shared on Google+ - why not check out Shannon Thomas , Judy Lofthouse and me Tessa Keough (anybody else from our LVUG Community posting about their genealogy, using Legacy, and their ancestors?). I'm keeping up with Shannon and Judy by clicking on their avatars (hint - you could do this for anyone). I show you how in the slides below. Now go play ! (That third slide should say "search for who you want to find" - sor...

How do I increase font size in Legacy?

On the events menu -the event, date & location  inserted print is so small I can barely read it.  Can this font be increased?  I can adjust the "note" section but not the above.   TNX

Can I safely remove other countries from Legacy files?

Question I have been dying to ask. Is there a way to safely remove the other countries? I could just delete them, but that's why I added safely. For now, I need only the US. If I find I need more, I will reinstall. I am using Legacy 8. tia

Tuesday's Tip - Are you checking out the #AtoZChallenge blogs?

April has been a busy month for our LVUG members who are part of this challenge. Today I'm encouraging you to check out  Judy Lofthouse's posts. She is writing about an ancestor each day (color me impressed!).  Shannon Thomas is publishing each day as well (both her tips and the colors she uses with her Legacy database are bright!). I am posting about Legacy events/fact at my KeoughCorner blog and about given names (often showing them off from my Legacy database) at my ScandiaMusings blog. What possessed me? Are you part of the #AtoZChallenge - if so please share your blog in the comments section so we can all follow along.

Adding a citation in Legacy for a World War I draft registration card.

Blog post today about adding a citation in Legacy for a World War I draft registration card. I hope you find it helpful! http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2015/04/legacy-tip-how-to-add-a-citation-for-a-world-war-i-draft-registration-card.html

Follow up on a Geo database issue.

Image
Follow up to the Geo database issue.  Thank you for your efforts Tessa Keough JL Beeken     I managed by trial and error to find the solution.  The image below shows the section of the Geo country codes file pertaining to the US.  You will see one entry called USA|+United States.  I changed United States to USA so it now reads USA|+USA.  Now, when I enter a new location into the Geo database in Legacy, the default is USA.  The file is called GeoCountryCodes.txt.  According to Legacy Help, it should be in the Legacy Program folder under GeoDB (on my Mac, it installed in the LegacyFamilyTree folder under _AppData, then Misc).  A simple file search should locate it, wherever it is.

Default wording USA instead of United States - how to set?

Image
How do I set the default wording for a Geo Database location to USA instead of United States?  The image below shows what came up when I searched the geo database for Rockport, USA.  I can amend the "United States" to USA manually every time, but I'd like to avoid having to do that.

How do I set married surnames?

Image
How do I set married surnames so they are in block caps and not between 'slashes'?  The image below will show what I mean.  Across the top (and everywhere else), surnames display in block caps but in the Married Names box near the bottom of the image, they are 'slashed'.  My default for display names is block caps.  Legacy 8, latest build.

Using Legacy's Census List tool.

Blog post today about using Legacy's Census List tool:  http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2015/04/youre-going-to-want-an-ancestor-in-this-record.html http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2015/04/youre-going-to-want-an-ancestor-in-this-record.html

Tuesday's Tip - Following along in the A-Z Challenge.

Tuesday's Tip - Hopefully you are following along with both Shannon Thomas and me as we (individually) blog our way through the alphabet in the #AtoZChallenge (I mentioned it last Tuesday). So far we are both up-to-date! A genealogy powehouse is Lisa Louise Cooke who just started an Evernote video series at   http://lisalouisecooke.com/2015/04/new-evernote-for-genealogy-video/ . Some of the videos will be free and others will be for members of her premium subscription members. We have some great people sharing their knowledge of Evernote - why not see if it might fit in with your research process.  Be sure to visit Shannon's blog every day during April (okay we all get to take Sunday off). She is  showing off her Legacy database  and sharing how she uses Legacy and chatting up some great resources she uses. One of those is Evernote and that was her letter E post at http://www.ourlifepicturebypicture.com/2015/04/e-is-for-evernote.html .

Fixing mistakes in my master source list.

I looked through my Master Source List tonight and saw a few mistakes that needed to be corrected so they would be consistent with the others.  Well, over an hour later. . . I got them ALL corrected (there were more than a few to my shock and horror). Some gremlin had to have been playing in my Source List, because I would NEVER do that-- yeah right! #keepingitreal

Has anyone tried creating an RTF output of a Registry Report?

Has anyone tried creating an RTF output of a Registry Report with a lot of sources? I just discovered that the latest version of Legacy 8 creates two sets of end notes. One set is just for sources that are attached to notes. The second set is for sources that are attached to everything else. I can’t publish a report with this issue. Has anyone else seen this and found a workaround? Legacy was made aware of this in early January, but has yet to resolve the issue.

Is there a way to transfer or move an event/fact?

Is there a way to transfer or move an Event/Fact from an Individual to a Marriage? When I started using Legacy I recorded resident information for a married couple under both individuals. Now I see that this resident information prints twice in a descendent report. OR do I need to go through my entire Legacy file and do a copy paste? (I'm starting the Great redo on my Legacy files).

Has anyone linked to their documents/images from Legacy to Google Drive?

Has anyone linked to their documents/images from Legacy to Google Drive and if in the event of needing a new computer, will it link all again. I have a few images in the Legacy media folder, but for other documents, birth, census etc, I would like to leave them where they are, but worry about doing too many and the link getting broken. Thanks.

Tuesday's Tip - The A-Z Challenge 2015.

I decided to combine the A-Z Challenge 2015 (blogging every day but Sunday during the month of April) with my events/fact in my Legacy database. I actually blogged about it on Tuesday (hence Tuesday's Tip) but forgot to post the link here.  There is still time to sign up for the A-Z Challenge (for any of you who blog) or why not use the month to work on your events/facts. Every day during April I plan to discuss (briefly) an event/fact in my database.  Follow along and share your thoughts or comments and we can all learn more about events/facts! http://keoughcorner.blogspot.com/2015/03/well-thats-another-fine-mess-a-z.html
