Thoughts on Legacy add-ons.

If you were going to buy an add-on to Legacy, what would you buy? Xmas ideas.

Sourcing DAR applications?

How do I source DAR applications - my number but multiple applications?

Tuesday's Tip - Thanksgiving edition!

Image
First off,  I am thankful for my co-moderators here at the LVUG Community -Susan Clark Linda McCauley and Carol Stevens have been and continue to be a huge help and keep me in the know genealogy speaking. We have been joined in hangouts by Monique Riley and Shannon Thomas who have shared their knowledge of Legacy and other great tools like Animap and Evernote. To all those who started out with us and to all of you have joined us - as of today 762 members - thanks and welcome. To the folks at Legacy Family Tree Software who have put together a great software program and continue to make improvements and inform and educate with their Legacy Webinars - thanks. And to the Google folks who provide the opportunity for us to use Google+, YouTube and Communities - so we can all share online - we have come a long way in the past few years! Now to share a little bit of how I am using Legacy this Thanksgiving season. I put together some photos and Legacy scr...

How I enter Civil War information in Legacy.

My blog was updated with a new post about how I enter Civil War information into Legacy. http://www.ourlifepicturebypicture.com/2014/11/entering-civil-war-ancestors-in-legacy.html

A new perspective on the Civil War.

Check out this post. Will give you a new perspective on the Civil War. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/special-features/2014/11/141111-veterans-day-150-anniversary-civil-war-memories

Can I import little twig Gedcom into an existing Legacy tree?

I'm wanting to switch from Family Tree Maker 2014 to Legacy and at some point I need to cut off building my family tree on Ancestry.com and syncing it to FTM 2014  (to pull in the media).  I plan to export from FTM 2014 into Legacy (to pull in the media).   I am almost done with the direct line ancestors (I also record their siblings)  through the early to mid-1800's. (comparing entries with source documents and excellent family research done by cousins)  I'm not adding the direct line ancestors from the 1700's yet (even though I can "see" them at Ancestry.com) because of lack of documentation and conflicting research.   Can I work on the descendant line for my great-great-great-great aunts and uncles separately at Ancestry.com and then export that particular little Gedcom to Legacy (via FTM 2014 to retain media) and attach it without problem? That way I could have the best of all worlds.  Doing research and documentation in Legacy ...

Missed Evernote Webinar - watch the recording!

If you did not have a chance to attend today's Legacy Webinar - make a point to watch the recording ! Lisa Louise Cooke gave an excellent presentation on one of our favorite topics - using Evernote with your genealogy . And we have our own Evernote fan and teacher here in our LVUG Community, Shannon Thomas, who has shared her tips and suggestions for using Evernote with Legacy . Between the two of them - no excuses for not learning and making use of Evernote with Legacy. Shannon continues to share how she uses Evernote with Legacy and it is a huge help in getting my head around all the things Evernote is capable of.   So this is a webinar to watch to help you get the most from two great programs - Legacy and Evernote . (It should be in the archived videos section later today). http://www.familytreewebinars.com/

Heads Up - LVUG Community - no hangout this month.

Heads Up - LVUG Community  - I am working out some internet issues (speed and connectivity) with my service provider AND don't want to run our hangout tomorrow, only to have it crash. So NO HANGOUT TOMORROW and this problem will be resolved within the week. I will record a video and upload to our Community later this week with what I had planned to discuss with Linda McCauley and Shannon Thomas and whoever else was going to JOIN in the room. Will be sharing a bit about Thanksgiving ideas for family history (being subtle but perhaps gathering some information!) and a bit of data entry for Legacy involving our veterans - military service and gravesite locator ( both in honor of November dates - Thanksgiving and Veterans Day ). If you have any suggestions for either topic, please be sure to share them with us. AND thanks for understanding that sometimes that internet grinch shows up right around hangout day !

Tuesday's Tip - One of my favorite things StoryCorps!

One of my favorite things StoryCorps is celebrating "10 years of listening to America." During the Thanksgiving weekend StoryCorps has always shared a theme and encouraged us to sit down with family or friends and listen and record their stories. Whether those stories are about Military Service, the Teachers Initiative, StoryCorps Legacy, Memory Loss, and many other initiatives, StoryCorps provides resources, tools and encouragement to help us tell our stories. Why not check out StoryCorps' website (and their resources - like great questions in the link below) to prepare for your Thanksgiving weekend. (And then get those stories into your Legacy family files!). http://storycorps.org/great-questions/

Tuesday's Tip - Today is Veterans Day in the USA.

You will notice several posts and articles about the history of Veterans Day, thanks to the men and women who have served our country (and their families because serving in the military is always a family affair), and remembrances of those in our own families who served. Are you telling their stories? Are you noting their military service and perhaps their burial information in your Legacy family file? Why not do a search for those who served in the military in your family file and use some time today to focus on the veterans in your family's history. And why not think about working on a memorial transcription project in the coming year (start today or this month and have something to post next November 11). The Honor Roll Project at Nutfield Genealogy ( Heather Wilkinson Rojo ) is a great project to work on - why not check it out (and plan to post for Memorial Day and Veterans Day). And thanks to all those who have served .

Is Legacy available for my android?

Can anyone tell me if I can get Legacy app for my android mobile?

Questions from one switching from FTM to Legacy.

I've decided to use Legacy as my genealogy program and would like your opinions as to my current plan of research.  I currently use Family Tree Maker 2014 so I can get the media downloaded to my computer quickly but I do plan to switch to Legacy. I have been extremely fortunate to have 3/4 of the family stay put in two spots since the early to mid 1800's.  The Irish Catholic 1/4 all arrived in 1840-1870 and married other Catholic families in the same county until the mid-1900's.   The other half all lived within 20 miles of each other (straddling a county line) and married the boy/girl next door for 150 years.  I have cousins who have generously supplied me with copies of their decades of research on this branch. In other words, I have a lot of documentation I can get online at Ancestry.com fairly quickly through public records.  (I look at the census reports, etc and make sure it all agrees with my cousin's research/Irish Catholic records I hav...

Clooz enhances and supports your Legacy experience.

Clooz enhances and supports your Legacy experience If you are not yet familiar with the virtually seamless export interface of processed source document information from Clooz 3.3 to Legacy 7.5/8.0, here are two Blog posts that review some of the capabilities.   http://clooz.com/clooz_blog.php?pid=13&p=3&search=#blt http://clooz.com/clooz_blog.php?pid=12&p=3&search=#blt When we first released this data export interface, I conducted a test. I opened blank Clooz and Legacy files and made the new Legacy file the primary external file link in Clooz.  I then processed over 40 documents of various types in Clooz, exporting the processed data to Legacy.  By paying careful attention to the great flexibility and user control over exactly what is exported, I created a complete Legacy Family Tree file without typing a single thing directly into Legacy.  I was then able to test and use all of the great capabilities of Legacy inherent in this top of the ...

Swedish ancestors? Check out ArkivDigital.

For those of you with Swedish ancestors, ArkivDigital is celebrating National Archives Day by opening up their online database for free on November 8 & 9 . So what are you waiting for - do a quick search in Legacy for your Swedish ancestors and start looking them in up in the records (remember how I told you about those fascinating Household Examination Records - ah it was the video on my lack of source citations!). ArkivDigital's color images of the HER and other records are gorgeous. Heck if you don't have Swedish ancestors, look up some of mine or just go and play around to see how it is done. Njuta (enjoy). http://www.arkivdigital.net/

Thanks for the Family History Month videos!

I have been following this community for a while, inspired by Tessa Keough YouTube videos. I am now very slowly re-entering material into Legacy and getting to grips with it. I loved the clips last month and I am still watching. So a public thanks and shout out. Legacy users are very lucky to have such inspiration and engagement.

Any update on TNG import to Legacy?

I have been a user of The Master Genealogist for years, but unfortunately this excellent software will now close down. No more updates will come, so I have decided to make a change to Legacy. I have bought the Pro Version and have made a gedcom transfer from TMG. It doesn't look too bad, but some things are missing. I know the people behind Legacy are working on a direct import from TMG, but it is some time now since we heard anything about the progress. Can someone in this group enlighten me a bit ?

Tessa and LVUG community - thanks for the tips & tricks videos.

Tessa and community...I just had to play "catch up" to finish watching the 2014 October Tips & Tricks.  I intend to share these with the LUG sponsored by the North San Diego County Genealogy Society.  What a great way for us to learn -- a little at a time!  Tessa -- you are amazing -- thank you for putting this together for us.

Tuesday's Tip - Go Vote - many worked hard to gain us the vote.

Many of our LVUG Community members are American citizens. Today is November 4 and is election day . From Senate and House elections, to Governors and State Legislatures, to Local elections, as well as bond issues and amendments - it is all in play today. If you haven't already voted by absentee ballot, early voting, or mail ballot - today is the day! Please vote ( after reading up on the issues and candidates ) and then you can add that fact/event into your Legacy family file. No matter the party, the person or the issue - we have the ability to make our voice heard. Thanks

A question about death notes in Legacy.

I am using Legacy  8.0.0.454 and I am  printing an ancestor  report and it prints  "Death Notes: y" under some people and nothing under others. Does anyone know what this is about?  thanks.

Issues exporting my tree to a Gedcom - help.

Hi All, Latest build 8.0.0.454 I'm having problems exporting my tree to Gedcom It appears to work but fails on exit with an error code 0xc0000005. I have tried doing a Check/Repair (Numerous times) and that also fails in the same way. Any suggestions? I have raised a problem report. Cheers Keith
