Genealogy Do-Over - Thoughts?

Unless you are a genealogist living under a rock or have been so busy researching that you have not been following the genealogy social media the past two weeks, you have heard about the Genealogy Do-Over. I share my thoughts in this post and would love to know yours. Is the Genealogy Do-Over in your future? Why or why not? Originally shared by Tessa Keough On New Year's Eve when thoughts go to resolutions, goals and plans for the New Year - I weigh in on the Genealogy Do-Over (it must be wordy Wednesday). I gave this some thought and hope you do too.  http://keoughcorner.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-genealogy-do-over-my-thoughts.html

Inability to post/email comments - why?

I am new on the Legacy User Group and am wondering how I resolve the inability to post/email comments.  When I try to email a response to the list I get an error from the AOL server:   ----- The delivery status notification errors ----- : conversation with      mail.LegacyUsers.com timed out while sending MAIL FROM Has anyone had this issue?  I have enjoyed the lessons learned and would love to be able to contribute. ~Mike

Another Tuesday's Tip - Some days I am on a roll!

Actually on the Legacy User Group a person asked how anyone handles their patronymic surnames and farm names (love those bygdebokers). If you have Scandinavian ancestors you will know what he was talking about - if you don't, perhaps you will find another use for my little "cheat."  The Norwegians who lived on farms used the farm name as a means of identification - so Erik Ivarsen, Medkilplass/Hastagjerdet was Erik Ivar's son born on  the Medkilplass farm who moved to the Hastagjerdet farm. Of course his nine children were either Erik's datters (daughters) or Erik's sens (sons) and they were born at Hastagjerdet. I use the individual's patronymic name cause that is the name they used AND I put the farm names in the suffix title. It looks a little something like this. I know the same holds true for my Swedish ancestors (most of whom were on farms as well).  If you have Scandinavian ancestors, how do you keep track of the patronymic and farm informati

Tuesday's Tip - Location reports to help in a search.

I subscribe to the Legacy User Group email forum (I hope I have that right!). Anyway, it is the place where a number of Legacy users ask questions or try to get their Legacy problems solved. It is moderated by Legacy and the messages are archived. Some of the questions posed are jumping off points for me - I try to figure out the answer (sometimes I even post my response). A recent one was interesting in a couple of ways. Why not read the question, follow along with my suggestion, and then think about (and share) how you would answer the question. A person is going to research in a particular place and wants a list of surnames that occur in that place (although they would like cities and counties, if possible, they really need the State and the surnames that occur there). The person has not been consistent in their data entry for locations and does not have the time to clean up their database. They are aware of the location report option but because their data entry is inconsiste

Of course it is time to wish everyone in our LVUG Community here on Google+ a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ! It has been a great year and I would like to thank each of our 787 members - some of you have been with us since the beginning  (thanks so much) and some joined this year (welcome). Your questions, comments and suggestions make our LVUG Community an active and helpful place to be to learn more about using our favorite genealogy software . Thanks While I have you here today - why not check out Tony Proctor's post on place, location and address. I find the discussion interesting and I do appreciate his approach. Here in the LVUG Community, we have discussed location before: using the master location list, including latitude and longitude, listing the place as it was identified at time of event, making notes to include any additional information that might be helpful to you and anyone else using your database. Tony discusses three things - place, location an

How did births get registered around 1920?

Was it done by the attending doctor or by the parents? Or? I'm trying to understand how my aunt was registered as having been born a year later than she actually was. This was not a transcription error; it was intentional by the parents.

Tuesday's Tip - A heads-up that we will not be having a LVUG hangout.

Between holiday plans and activities (that seem to be overwhelming and keep growing in number), I thought we could use a little break. So relax and enjoy that hour - perhaps spend it working on your genealogy research, adding some Christmas memories to your Legacy database, or spreading good cheer to friends or neighbors.  If you could use just a few moments out of your day to let me know what topics you would like us to cover in 2015 - I would consider it a gift (my not so subtle Christmas tie-in!). Just post your thoughts right below in the comment section. If you are wondering what to do with yourself since we don't have a hangout this month, why not check out any of the 31 video tips that were posted  here at the LVUG Community and at my YouTube channel in October. They all relate to some topic in the Legacy Help file and maybe there will be something new to you . For my part, that half hour a day FindAGrave project is coming along nicely and I have found several

I imported from FTM 2014 into Legacy 8 - question.

I just imported from FTM 2014 into Legacy 8 and plan to work in Legacy from here on out.  The check/repair report in Legacy says I need to verify/correct the gender of one wife.  When I clicked on "Nancy", sure enough she was listed as a male. :)  All of the data entry boxes on her individual Information form appear editable except for gender.  "Female" and "?" are grayed out and I cannot change her gender from male to female.  What now? I also have another marriage where the report says I need to verify/correct the gender of a husband, but he is marked down as male and his wife is female so I presume I tell the program to ignore that error from here on out.

Lumper versus Splitters.

Saw this on Twitter and thought it might be of interest to this group. It's a useful explanation of Lumpers vs Splitters -- i.e. how you organize your sources in Legacy. Hope the link comes through properly. http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2014/12/lumpers-vs-splitters.html?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=tweet&utm_content=LUG&utm_campaign=LegacyTip-LumpersSplitters

Tuesday's Tip - Carve a bit of time to reflect on what you have accomplished.

As we get swamped with holiday plans and activities, try to carve a bit of time to reflect on what you accomplished in 2014 (any special projects, research trips or courses) and think about what you might want to focus on in 2015 . What areas of research do you plan to focus on? What seminars and conferences do you want to attend (either in person or virtually)? What projects, societies or groups do you plan to volunteer some time with? And what Legacy webinar sessions fit in with your interests and plans? BECAUSE the 2015 Legacy Webinar Schedule is out and you can register for any sessions that you are interested in all from the comfort of your computer! Why not check out what is on the schedule and if any of those sessions fit in with your research plans for 2015 . The red link in the top right-hand corner is a simple way to register for multiple sessions at one time. Although our LVUG Community is not affiliated with Legacy or Millennia, we do like their software AND kno

Glitch in Legacy Marriages - FYI

For info, for Legacy 8 users, if you do a search for a given Marriage Event-Name and you get a "no matches" result even though there should be some, there is a bug that will be addressed in a future update (tagged as issue 5538).  The search apparently fails for all but the "Equals To" condition.  I reported a problem and this was the response.  I'm not sure if it just appeared in update 459 or if it exists for other 8.0 versions.

Question regarding custom search and report.

I'm new to Legacy and new to this community so this may have been asked before but my search didn't show it.  I want to create a completely custom search and report. I'm trying to connect families for which I have incomplete information- What I have is from LDS films from Poland in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Many of the first names are common and I don't know which may be connected or may be duplicates. I'd like to do a search for every individual with a specific father's name, i.e. show me everyone whose father was Adalbert Dachtera. Can this be done? thanks, Mary Dachtera Foxworthy

A great example of how one (very smart and efficient) member works her way through a project.

A great example of how one (very smart and efficient) LVUG Community member works her way through a project and a search list. Thanks for sharing Shannon Thomas Originally shared by Shannon Thomas ** http://www.ourlifepicturebypicture.com/2014/11/tagging-in-legacy.html

Is there any progress regarding direct import from TMG to Legacy?

As far as I can see the last news were given end of September. Rgds Jan

Tuesday's Tip - Focus on one thing!

We had a very busy Thanksgiving weekend (Thanksgiving in 2 parts because family was in from out of town). Everyone has traveled back home and now we put up the lights and the Advent season begins. As we prepare for the Christmas holidays, we get very busy and maybe we have less time for our family history (understandable, but ...). My Tuesday's Tip this week is to encourage all LVUG Community members to lighten up and enjoy the season . Focus on one project and spend a little time on it each day (break it down into manageable pieces). A project I am working on is to get through my Search Results for possible FindAGrave entries. My tip is to make that search list and then work on a dozen names each day (I am getting up a half hour earlier to get this done in peace and quiet). It moves pretty quickly and I can easily pick up from where I left off on my list because it is my last search list (nice feature). Since I have the source citation set up and saved, I can easily make sur
