Tuesday's Tip - Help test FamilySearch's wiki usability.

Tuesday's Tip - It is not what I promised during our most recent LVUG Hangout (that will come soon but today was a crazy day). In the meantime, why not test your research skills and help out FamilySearch.org by testing their Wiki Usability. I am one of those people willing to try something and give my opinion. Checked out the sites and chose my favorite. And then went on to find the death information for Douglas and Isaac - next to work on marriage records. So far, so good - how about you? https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Testing:_Wiki_Usability

How do I not show living people in a Gedcom?

Attaching a Gedcom and DNA to GedMatch. Is there a way to not showing living people but still show me in the Gedcom.

Mistakes in original sources - how to note?

I have found many mistakes in original sources lately and am curious if others have experienced the same thing. The latest find was yesterday when I found a birth record for a great uncle on Ancestry.  The person who recorded the births for the town added no given names to the children born. They are all listed with their surnames only. The record has the birth date and the parents names for each child except in my great uncle's case the names of the parents are incorrect. The names given are Daniel and Sarah when his parents first names were Dan and Emma. I can understand the Daniel but Sarah? The town they lived in was tiny that the 1900 census is only 3 images. I recently took photos of records from a church record and one of the above named sisters has an aunt and uncle listed as her parents in that record.  Other church records give the correct parents for both her and her brother mentioned above. I knew these people quite well.  The great aunt lived over the ro...

Issues watching Illinois webinar recording.

Is anyone else having a problem watching the archive of the Illinois webinar by Thomas MacEntee that was this Wednesday?  I tried 3x yesterday and 3x today and it only loads the first 10 minutes.  Thanks.

Question about media gallery.

I just got the new version of Legacy a few months ago and have been happily entering my data into it.  Just started to enter pics into the Media Gallery and I'm having problems.  It's extremely slow when I try to scroll through to find a picture, flickers, and after just a few pictures it crashes the computer loosing the pics that I just put on.  I have used Family Tree Maker for years and have never had any problem with my pictures there.    I love Legacy 8 Deluxe but I have to have the pictures.  Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try so that I don't have to go back to Family Tree Maker?  Does it not like Windows 8?  Is there a setting I just don't know about?

This month we answer questions from our community.

We have pulled some questions from the forum and our Community - where Legacy users have asked "how do I do xxxxx?" and we are going to discuss our approach. Remember there is not one way - so we want you to join in and give your suggestions! Then we will discuss how we use e-learning opportunities. Are we making the best use of our time and effort AND what can we do to get more out of the variety of e-learning opportunities. Our LVUG hangout is this Thursday at 1:00 pm (pacific time) that is  1:00 pm pacific time USA  2:00 pm mountain time USA  3:00 pm central time USA  4:00 pm eastern time USA And why not check out www.worldtimebuddy.com to find the timezone of interest to you. Know that Google puts the hangout invitation in your computer's timezone. You can JOIN the hangout (we have room for 10 JOINers) or VIEW at the Community Event (just click on the arrow once we start the broadcast) or over on my YouTube Channel. If you can't make it l...

Tuesday's Tip - why not JOIN or VIEW our LVUG hangout.

JOIN or VIEW our LVUG hangout scheduled for this Thursday (notice will be going out in just a bit). Because we had such a big weekend - what with the geneasleepover and the FamilySearch indexing project (and congrats to all who joined in and did such an amazing job), Thursday's hangout is going to be very low key. I have pulled a few questions off the forum and here in the Community about how to do something in Legacy and we will discuss how we do it. Also we are going to discuss a few tips and suggestions for e-learning and what we do before and after we have been to the webinar, hangout, live streamed lecture. Are we using what we have learned? So Tuesday's Tip is to join us this Thursday - and share your thoughts on how you use e-learning opportunities and see if we can answer a few "how do I that?" questions.

Moving the date for our July hangout.

As our long-time LVUG Community members know we have a monthly hangout on the third Thursday of the month. Last month we took a "start of summer" break in the schedule because everyone's schedules were swamped. We have been really good about keeping to our schedule and providing you with (we hope) interesting and informative monthly meetings. And we will continue to do that in the future - as all of us do this as volunteers and we enjoy it. However, this month a couple of things took up more of my volunteer time than expected. Those of you who know that I am in the Guild of One-Name Studies might know that there has been some admin issues (nothing to be done by us but it generated lots of heat on social media) and in my position as the USA national rep I got hammered with emails. In addition I did a presentation last week for the Friends of the National Archives that took up more time than I originally planned. Suffice it to say - the third Thursday in July snuck up ...

Tuesday's Tip - Get your sleep this week!

FamilySearch.org has a 24-hour indexing event planned for July 20-21st. If everyone in the LVUG Community indexed one batch - FamilySearch and genealogists worldwide would be up 664 batches . I'm in - how about you? I use FamilySearch.org site and appreciate the indexes and scans available free of charge to all of us. I am a big fan of their online tutorials (check out the Learning tab) and I have made use of the microfilm and books at the Family History Library. Indexing is a way to give back and is something we can all do. If you want to have some fun with it - join DearMYRTLE as she hosts a GeneaSleepOver - more informatin at her blog ( http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2014/07/dearmyrtles-geneasleepover-worldwide.html ) https://familysearch.org/blog/en/join-worldwide-indexing-event/?cid=hp1-1032

How do you use Potential Problems report?

I'm off work for the next few days and decided it was a good time to print a Potential Problems Report.  It's only 20 pages...lol.  This should make for a fun few days!  Do you use the Potential Problems Report to clean up your database or another type of report??

Tuesday's Tip (on Thursday) - Dates and Searching in Legacy..

W ell I am two days late but pushing this tip on a day that starts with T so hopefully it is all good. Tomorrow (Friday 11 Jul 2014) is an added webinar day with Legacy Webinars hosted by Geoff Rasmussen. The topic will be Legacy-related (that's always nice when these webinars cover working with Legacy). If you have not registered, you might want to. They will be covering some of the important basics in Legacy - dates and searching . There is a handout and it is available to all. Why not download it and check it out. We should take advantage of opportunities to learn more about how to use our genealogy program and this will be a good chance to see how things work in Legacy version 8.0. If you can't make it live (I know that I'll be traveling then) you can always watch the recorded version. Oh, and be sure to ask your questions on dates and searching and get answers from the Legacy team.

A problem with my Legacy 8 syncing with Family Tree.

I just discovered a problem with my Legacy 8 syncing with Family Tree. I just synced a recently deceased aunt and noticed a strange source that shows in my Legacy FamilySearch file.  It is a Harrington Family history book. So I checked to see if I had accidentally added this source to her but it does not show up in her sources when I look at her individual record in Legacy. I looked at her sister and see there is a source listed for her in Legacy FamilyTree with a Massachusetts Vital Record source that is not a source for her.  Again that source does not show up when I look at her individual record.  Would others who are linked to FamilySearch please check there files and let me know if this is happening to you or if it is just lucky me that is having this happen.  I am putting this under Discussion because I know how to do it.  Just want feedback. Thanks!

How to enter census events?

Image
I'm new to Legacy 8 and wonder if anyone has advice for how to enter Census Events.  What do you put in the Notes section and how do you format the information?

Question about entering a deed in events.

When entering a deed in events, do you use the date of the deed was signed or the date when the sale was registered?  Any suggestions would be helpful.

My chart is not printing MRINs - help.

I'm trying to print out my pedigree charts and although the box "Print MRIN" is selected, they will not print out on the chart. Has anyone else experienced this? I looked for any conflicting settings, but I can't find any.

Were do you put your proof reports in Legacy?

For those who use Evidentia, where do you put your proof reports in Legacy? Do you put them in research notes or do you attach them to something else?

Question about the Families app.

I was looking at the Families app in the Apple store. It doesn't get very good reviews, especially for Legacy 8. Can anyone in this community give me a review? Is it worth the $15? I use the Ancestry App, but would like to have my Legacy family tree information with me since that's my main program.

Tuesday's Tip - What projects are you working on?

Tuesday's Tip - Have we got marriages and marriage records out of our system? I still have some work to do on my marriage records and citations but I made a pretty good dent. Today is the start of a new month - July (and we are starting the second half of the year 2014!). How are you doing on any major tasks, projects or resolutions you gave/made for yourself in 2014? It might be a good time to take a look at your list and tweak it if necessary. (1) The first day of the month is a great time to backup your Legacy database . No one wants to redo their data entry work. Whether you set your backups automatically or do them manually and/or sync your data to an external hard drive and/or the cloud and/or any other plan - remember to (a) check those settings , (b) do it , and (c) every so often check to make sure that your backup plan works (you might try restoring to see if what you asked for is what you got). And it doesn't hurt to have more than a plan B, have a plan C - sh...

Happy Canada Day!

Image
Photo by Clem Sim on Unsplash Take advantage of the one day of free records at Ancestry.ca. Doing a Legacy search for people either born or died in Canada brought up 64. That should keep me busy til midnight.

Not impressed with Legacy 8 - your thoughts?

I downloaded Legacy8 yesterday but am very disappointed. I will be continuing to use v.7, I think. I have many pictures and scans of documents in v.7 and don't want to take the time and energy to put them all into v.8, one by one. I thought they would be brought into v.8 automatically.
