Using Legacy with Google Drive?

This is directed to Shannon Thomas.  Shannon some time ago you wrote on here about having your Legacy program (I think you said) in Dropbox??  (It was one of those cloud storage things).  I'm wanting to do this too in the hope that I can send a link to my family so they can view only our family history.  How do I go about installing Legacy on Google Drive please?

  1. Michelle, I keep my Legacy files in Dropbox. I do not have Legacy installed on Dropbox, but on my computer. But my fdb files are all in a folder labeled DATA on my dropbox. Since there is a free Legacy version, your family members should be able to install the program and then just open the family file from the DATA location. One thing to be aware of - it is easier to mess up your data this way. For example more than one instance of the db could be open at the same time and saved over one another, erasing newly entered data from the other open file. And of course, there can be more fingers in the pie - that is, more people having access to add, edit, delete data.  If you are doing this to be able to work collaboratively, then you will want to set up some working ground rules.  If you just want to share the info so others can see it, why not just post a copy of your latest fdb file to Google Drive which family members can open and view on their computers using their Legacy program. You will need to make it known that this is not the master file and that all suggestions for edits, adds, deletes will need to go through you.

  2. I did have it installed in the Dropbox folder. It worked fine. When I installed Legacy I selected the folder to install it to. I did end up having to reinstall Legacy and it installed to the default location because I forgot to change it. I now backup my Legacy data files and settings to Dropbox.

  3. If you want to share your information I would do a report from Legacy and save that as a pdf in Dropbox that you can share with your family. Most people are notgoing to take the time to learn Legacy if they just want to read theirfamily history. If it is for collaboration I would do as Lynn said above.
