Tuesday's Tip - Apologies - after I plugged my upcoming webinar presentation on SCGS, I had to cancel. The good news is that it will be rescheduled. The bad news is the reason. As sometimes happens a member of our family takes ill. When that happens real life means family comes first. One of my siblings got a diagnosis that means we have some chemo appointments on the horizon, together with additional treatment. So my brother and I will spend some quality time at the local Veterans Administration Hospital (they have been wonderful throughout the wonder what's wrong, testing and explanation of how to attack this phases). Silver lining - spending more time with brother and asking lots of questions to update his branch of the tree. Thanks for understanding, and now that we have the schedule for treatments set, I will be back on track. My tip for today is take care of yourself and get your checkups so you can be doing genealogy and entering data in your Legacy software ...

Tuesday's Tip - Whether you attend live, watch the recording during the "free" week, or are a member and watch whenever the mood strikes you - it's all good. Last week the webinar on Homestead Records & Following the Witnesses was excellent! I consider a webinar worth my investment of time if (1) it addresses a topic I want or need to learn more about, (2) the presenter takes the time to present in an interesting and informative way, and (3) if there are one or two take aways. (1) How many of us have ancestors who made use of the Homestead Act? I know that my James Murphy not only acquired land through the Homestead Act but also by purchasing land made available by the relinquishment of the War of 1812 warrants (another good webinar!). A recently found cousin is an Olympic athlete (She just took home Bronze on Friday).  I want to record her medals and competitions in my Legacy program.  Which would be more appropriate for the event fact: "Honors", "Occupation", or create one specific to each event (such as 2016 Rio Olympic Games or 1996 World Cup?

Whatever your plans for the evening - you might want to change them. May I suggest that you watch PBS' American Experience tonight - "The Boys of '36" - a documentary inspired by Daniel James Brown excellent book "The Boys in the Boat." I saw an advance screening of the show and it is something you don't want to miss. It combines family history (the stories of the individual young men, the coaches and the amazing British boat designer), social history (Seattle in the 1930s, university life, crew), national and international history (American politics, the 1936 Berlin Olympics, racial and economic realities in the 1930s), and one of the best, most up-lifting stories of overcoming personal difficulties and achieving goals. The book and documentary's message is that small things make a difference, people can overcome tremendous odds, and we are a community of dreamers and doers.
