Can we save all these posts now that Google+ is shutting down?
Now that Google+ is about to go to Google Heaven with all their other failed offerings, has anyone worked out how we could save all these posts, so that the knowledge is not lost?
We started out as a Google+ Community - it is closing down so we have migrated here to Blogger. This will be the place for 6+ years worth of posts and comments (an archive of sorts) as well as the place to dish up current questions, comments, and tips about our genealogy software of choice, Legacy Family Tree.
support.google.com - Download your Google+ data - Google+ Help
ReplyDeleteThis link takes you to an intro on Google Takeout. This allows you to download the Google data.
W Thompson That doesn't help. My question was about downloading all the posts on our Community, not just anything that I personally have done. How do we create an archive of everything that members have posted in the Community? Does that better explain what it is I am looking for?
ReplyDeleteGoogle+ is shutting down? Is hangouts going with it?
ReplyDeleteJohn H You're right. There's a lot of concerns being expressed in the Google+ communities over transitioning to something else. This statement is what I've seen to be the announcement of the withdrawal of Google+:
ReplyDeleteConsumer Google+
We decided to sunset the consumer version of Google+. To give users a full opportunity to transition, we will be implementing this wind-down over a 10-month period, slated for completion by the end of next August. Over the coming months, we will provide consumers with additional information, including ways they can download and migrate their data.
--- announcement end --
Other concerns being expressed is what data will eventually be exported (i.e. how much user profile data may be exposed when a community is exported). I'm also expecting any migration announcements would be directed to our board OWNER.
Because this whole announcement seems to be a knee jerk reaction to the Google+ breach, one hopes Google finds a solution over the next few months. We'll see....
Tessa Keough have you gotten anything from Google?
ReplyDeleteI have not received anything yet - did send them a help request and was spending some time reading about how to save our knowledge base. Very disappointing but have to say I am not surprised as Google moves into the gadget area - they really stopped supporting Google+ a while ago and with the security breach they experienced probably decided they just did not want to fix it. Will mark this to give everyone an update on October 29 - I think even Google is trying to figure this out!
ReplyDeleteI realize that this is upsetting to those of us who preferred non-Facebook groups and/or wanted a site where we were not part of the Legacy company (nothing negative, just that you can post and get responses that are not company provided/approved). All the recordings are at my YouTube channel (we decided early on not to place them on a dependent channel) so they will always be available. As far as the conversations, we will keep checking it out. Thanks so much!
Thank you Tessa.
ReplyDeleteAlso, any blog posts that I did regarding Legacy are still on my blog at http://www.ourlifepicturebypicture.com/search/label/Legacy%20Family%20Tree
ReplyDeleteI have sent request for information and process to Google+ admins - we shall see. Wondering how far their planning is for this shutdown. Will keep you posted.
ReplyDeleteJohn - see my most recent comment this morning - we are working on it!
